Packers part ways with Brandon Saine

The Packers have waived running back Brandon Saine, Ty Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Saine appeared in six games for Green Bay in 2012. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Green Bay’s Week Six win at Houston and missed the remainder of the campaign. Saine’s agent, Joe Flanagan, told the Journal-Sentinel Saine failed a physical with the club.

Saine, who played collegiately at Ohio State, signed with Green Bay in July 2011 as an undrafted free agent. He gained 69 yards rushing and receiving in his rookie season with the Packers.

Saine’s departure leaves the Packers with three running backs on the roster: DuJuan Harris, Alex Green and James Starks. The Packers hosted Cedric Benson on Wednesday, with Benson confirming the visit on Twitter. Benson began 2012 as Green Bay’s starting tailback before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

This really smells more like roster room for Benson than for an aggressive RB draft choice. I believe if someone like Montee Ball is still available in the 3rd you could see them make a move, otherwise I would expect something 5 or later and a resigning of Benson.

Harris earned the right to be given a shot, Benson was fairly effective before the injury, the Packers still seem to believe Starks could turn into something, and Alex Green isn’t a slouch either. None of them are feature backs and only Harris appears to have the potential to be the RB of the future for the Pack but they’re not suffering either.

Then again, Eddie Lacy in the first could happen too…

If Eddie Lacy or montee ball arnt there..sign Ced benson for a year a two and Draft Marcus Lattamore in the third round and let him rest..I think he could be a beast once he gets healthy again..he is worth the gamble.

I must be missing something about Benson. I don’t really see that he’s more effective than cheaper options, and he fumbles, and he has past knucklehead tendencies. I was not thrilled when he came to GB in the first place.

Spot for Benson on their roster.

Saine was an alright rotational kind of runningback, good hands out of the backfield… not the fastest or biggest, but dude is a gamer and what not.

Not a spot for Benson, just clearing out failed physicals.
