49ers trade up to 18th spot to grab Eric Reid

The 49ers entered the draft with 13 selections and they used some of them to swing a trade with the Cowboys for the 18th pick in the first round.

They used the pick to shore up the safety spot, grabbing Eric Reid from LSU to join a group that lost Dashon Goldson to the Buccaneers in free agency. That made safety one of the few needs on a team that had more picks than they had roster spots open for newcomers.

Reid has the size/speed mix that teams are looking for in safeties in an age when tight ends move like wide receivers. Reid uses that size and speed to lay some serious hits on ball carriers, which should make him right at home alongside Donte Whitner in the 49ers secondary. We’ll see if Reid’s arrival ends the chance that Charles Woodson winds up in San Francisco.

The 49ers gave up the 74th overall pick in addition to sending the 31st pick of the first round to Dallas.

I know it probably derailed the chances of Woodson coming to SF, but I still hope they pick him up for veteran leadership if this guy is in fact their future at this position in the event of growing pains.

Welcome to the Niners and the City by the Bay Eric! You’re playing for a competitor in a tough division.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

CowBabies gave up on pick after Saints took Vacarro. Sour grapes, so JJ takes his ball and goes home.

Hopefully Harbaugh let’s him play a little wide receiver with the sole intent of having him lay out Richard Sherman.

Trade up for Eric Reid? I watch a lot of SEC football and like Reid but not enough to move up to get him. Good chance he would have been there at 32 or Cyprien. You move up and take Sharif to be the future replacement for cowboy. I would have drafted corner before Reid you have to think of Rogers contract after this season and Cully well u know needs to grow up.

I thought they would have traded up for Vaccarro Also whats up with Sharrif Floyd? Raiders Passed on him twice, and 49ers need a DT (Not sold on Dorsey) and passed on him too? Hes falling far

Dallas made a horrible deal you essentially passed on Floyd for the last pick in round one and the last pick in round two not a second rounder this brain trust is a bunch of morons

  16. ravensdominate says: Apr 25, 2013 11:11 PM

Wait why did it take so long for the Ravens to pick? Oh yeah I know why… We go last cus we’re the best. World Champs.

  17. 49ers71 says: Apr 25, 2013 11:21 PM

niners856 I don’t see why you like this pick. We don’t need a thumper at safety but more of a ball hawk. They reached big time on this pick. Datone Jones or Sharif would have been the players I would have moved up for.I think they got enamored by Reid’s combine #’s SMH .

  18. braceyourselffor12 says: Apr 26, 2013 12:05 AM

And that is why you’re not the Niners GM.

Remember 2010? I almost threw a brick at my t.v. when the announced Aldon Smith. That seemed to work out pretty well. In Har-Baalke we trust.

    Go Niners.

The funniest part of this deal is only giving up a 3rd to move up to 18th from 31st. Then watching Jerry Jones select a projected 3rd rounder with the 1st they acquired from SF.

  21. true9erfan66 says: Apr 26, 2013 12:44 AM

Lol hahaha… I love to read all you so called 9er fans. I say so called cause if you knew anything you would know ppl made the exact same comments. About A. Smith & Keap everyone saying reach we didn’t need to pick him he woulda lasted he is a 3 year project ect. Well what happend A. Smith being best pass rusher in league. Or at least a top 3 than keap is are future and changing the game. So I would say stop talking cause you guys sound stupid. Trust Baalke & harbaugh they have earned it. Especially Baalke who also drafted A. Davis & iupati who by the way you guys also said were reaches and why move up 2 spots he woulda been there well iupati is best in legue at guard and Davis is top 3 defiantly top 5 what else do you guys want to say that makes you sound even more like an idiot

  22. realfootballfan says: Apr 26, 2013 2:25 AM

The team that beat them in the Super Bowl got the better safety at the end of the round.

  23. shkz4 says: Apr 26, 2013 2:53 AM

Welcome to the Niners Eric! Looking forward to watching you play next season.

  24. socal9er says: Apr 26, 2013 3:06 AM

They must have known someone was going to nab him in first or they would’ve stayed put at 31. I’m very interested in what they do at 34! Hunter or Woods? a DT?
