Browns could be trying to get Geno Smith before Philly

2013 NFL Combine Getty Images

At a time when many believe the Browns would like to jump the draft-pick line in front of the Eagles to get a pass rusher, some think that the Browns could be targeting a pass thrower.

There’s a building buzz that the Browns could be plotting to move from No. 6 to No. 3 to get quarterback Geno Smith before the Eagles take him at No. 4.

The move, if it happens, would be a shock.  Smith currently is regarded as a guy who could slide to the bottom of round one, if not out of the first round completely.

Still, it makes more sense to move up for Smith than a pass rusher, given that there are more than a few of them pegged for the top ten — Ziggy Ansah, Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, to name a few.

The Eagles have shown strong interest in Smith.  The entourage that traveled last month to Morgantown for a private workout with Smith included owner Jeffrey Lurie.  While most think the Eagles wouldn’t be inclined to use a rare (for Philly) top-five pick on a quarterback at a time when Mike Vick and Nick Foles are under contract, the one thing that everyone is expecting with new coach Chip Kelly is something unexpected.

For the Browns, a move to No. 3 would mark the second straight year in which the Browns climbed into the three spot.  Last year, the Browns traded from No. 4 to No. 3 to get running back Trent Richardson.  This year, a move to get Geno Smith would be far bolder.

But it would at least go a long way toward getting folks in Cleveland to quit talking about Jimmy Haslam and Pilot Flying J.

This is the 50th rumor about the Browns and every one is completely different.

  9. apeisboss says: Apr 25, 2013 1:24 PM

As a browns fan, this would be absolutely devastating. We were hoping for a change from inane and dubious decision making to reasoned and logical decision making—

    PLEASE…GOD…..NO!!

  10. brownspower says: Apr 25, 2013 1:25 PM

This doesn’t make sense and probably won’t happen. If Banner were to make a deal to move ahead of Philly it would only be to piss off Lurie; it would make no sense from a football perspective.

  11. hbdbrowns33 says: Apr 25, 2013 1:25 PM

If they do I’m done. Remember last year when the rumor floated that the Browns were going to take Weeden in the first round? Everyone thought that wouldn’t happen either. This would be absolutely one of the worst picks in Browns history if they do it.

  12. floratiotime says: Apr 25, 2013 1:26 PM

These stories are all spin and manipulation … with very little truth mixed in.

  13. thewizardofbs says: Apr 25, 2013 1:27 PM

if this is true I feel so bad for Geno Smith

  14. uwsptke says: Apr 25, 2013 1:28 PM

Hopefully all of this talk of QB-needy teams getting scared and reaching comes to fruition and a run on the position happens early. If Smith goes that early, Bills will absolutely not let Nassib go past them at #8, and even Barkley could end up going in the first round.

All of this is music to the ears of teams who don’t have a need at the position. More talent will slide down to the already talent-rich teams.

  15. gooseusaf1 says: Apr 25, 2013 1:29 PM

I really don’t think the Eagles want to take Geno Smith with the number 4 pick. They will either: a) Trade back
    b) Take Dion Jordan if available
    c) Take a Tackle
    d) Last resort, Austin

They would be better served to stay put, draft a defensive player or tackle and trade back into the first round to get EJ Manuel.

  16. wegonefunkwichamind says: Apr 25, 2013 1:29 PM

It’s hard to believe any team would take Geno in the first. It seems like the only supposedly interested teams are in the top 10, most of which are picking again in the top of the second. I don’t think I’ve seen any mock (not that it really matters) that has Geno Smith being drafted by anyone after #10. Those teams could just wait for the second round to roll around if they want him.

  17. johnnycamparm says: Apr 25, 2013 1:30 PM

For the rest of the AFC North…

  18. mrobinson14 says: Apr 25, 2013 1:30 PM

Don’t underestimate a trade for Manuel. Both teams showed great interest in him and Chud compared him to newton

  19. patriotsdefense says: Apr 25, 2013 1:30 PM

This headline is straight from an agent begging to create buzz. It fails to do so.

  20. thegreatgabbert says: Apr 25, 2013 1:32 PM

Only a few hours left to monger rumors. For the first round, at least.

  21. dowhatifeellike says: Apr 25, 2013 1:32 PM

I doubt this is true but it would fall within the Browns’ history of drafting college wunderkind who can’t play in the NFL.

  22. weareallkipnises says: Apr 25, 2013 1:34 PM

I don’t want the Browns taking this guy at #6, and I damn sure don’t want him at #3. Especially when they’d probably give up their 1st rounder next year to move up since they don’t have a 2nd this year. Although nothing with this team surprises me anymore. After all, it is the same team that gave up a 1st rounder the following year to move up 1 spot and take Kellen Winslow.

  23. inyofaceagain says: Apr 25, 2013 1:35 PM

  24. rkt4mayor says: Apr 25, 2013 1:36 PM

The Browns can have Geno Smith and for good measure…they can have Michael “Ron Mexico” Vick as well!

We’ll trade him for Jason Campbell and a box of dog treats.

    Sincerely,
    Philadelphia Eagles Nation

  25. johanvil says: Apr 25, 2013 1:36 PM

If they did that, it would be at least idiotic. And I’m being polite here.

  26. brownspower says: Apr 25, 2013 1:38 PM

I’ve got to give the Brown’s front office credit. They’ve got all the “experts” totally baffled. They’ve done a good job of masking what they plan to do and this article is just one example of that. Now if they just don’t screw it up when it’s our turn to pick we’ll be good.

  27. patfanken says: Apr 25, 2013 1:39 PM

Pats D is right on the money. Don’t forget that Mike’s main sources prior to him linking with NBC, were agents, and of course he has remained loyal to them….as he should. But that being the case, we should all be aware that a good percentage of his “leaks” are going to be coming from agents with an agenda.

  31. wryly1 says: Apr 25, 2013 1:41 PM

  32. jack3dsd says: Apr 25, 2013 1:42 PM

  33. justintuckrule says: Apr 25, 2013 1:43 PM

If I were a Browns fan, I’d burn my Browns’ fan card if that happened. They won’t trade away picks for a once in a generation QB like RG3 but they’ll trade them for a guaranteed bust?

  34. realfootballfan says: Apr 25, 2013 1:44 PM

I still think Jacksonville is fooling everybody, and he’s going at two.

  35. wludford says: Apr 25, 2013 1:45 PM

Lots of QB-needy teams in the early 2nd round will be looking to trade back into the 1st to get their guy.

Geno, Nassib, Barkley and maybe even EJ Manuel will all be gone by #34.

  36. brohamma says: Apr 25, 2013 1:45 PM

They should make the deal with New England to get Mallet, the 29th and a pick next year. Geno Smith is TERRIBLE in cold weather games and the idea that he would even be considered in Cleveland by Mike Lombardi is a joke… I’m sorry, smoke.

  37. audient says: Apr 25, 2013 1:45 PM

The Browns would have to be sniffing diesel fumes to make that trade.

    Wait.

Nothing currently being circulated now has any credence.
If anybody in the Browns org is involved…I’d put money on Lombardi creating smoke to hide their real targets. He’s quite good at it

  39. rkt4mayor says: Apr 25, 2013 1:46 PM

This rumor has Joe Banner’s grubby hands all over it.

Ol’ Banner thinks he is smarter than anyone and is trying to bait excitable Jeff Lurie into panicking and making a stupid decision.

Banner thinks if he can put out the word that the Browns “love” Geno Smith that the Eagles will draft him to deny the Browns that which they covet.

Hopefully, the Eagles don’t reach for Smith or any other QB.

  40. thegreatgabbert says: Apr 25, 2013 1:47 PM

Best case scenario for the Jags. They can trade back with Philly for extra pick or two, then get Nick Foles for next to nothing. Foles is the guy they want, he is similar in style to Gabbert and Henne, and has a strong relationship with Frank Sefco (or whatever the hell his name is), the new QB coach in Jax.

  41. rkt4mayor says: Apr 25, 2013 1:50 PM

The Eagles should swap 1st round picks with the Bowns.

The Eagles will also trade Mike Vick for Jason Campbell and the Browns 2nd round pick.

A trade that will greatly benefit both teams.

  42. kevingreene160sacknoHOFclub says: Apr 25, 2013 1:50 PM

It takes a special kind of crazy to draft a QB first round in back to back years.

  43. ryanrockzzz says: Apr 25, 2013 1:51 PM

How can anyone blame any team for wanting a player? None of them are proven, and no one knows how good they will be. So if the Browns move up, down, sideways whatever their fans just have to trust they got the right player. If they can/should do that or not is another debate entirely.

  44. 1phd says: Apr 25, 2013 1:53 PM

One of the hardest things to do in the NFL is to make the Bengals look like a well-run organization.

  52. anhdazman says: Apr 25, 2013 2:03 PM

I mean these are the Browns. The same Browns who got an additional 1st round pick last year for ATL Julio Jones trade. But quickly turned it around on a 2nd year QB just about to turn 30 years old and getting his last chance in Cleveland in only his 2nd year.
    Brandan Weeden! Wow!

  53. officialgame says: Apr 25, 2013 2:04 PM

It is very possible this is a smokescreen by the Eagles to get the Browns to overpay for Gino Smith rated the 21st best prospect on most boards and a second rounder on some. There is no love lost between Laurie and Skates Banner and it leaves the Eagles the tackle they really want.

  62. shlort says: Apr 25, 2013 2:20 PM

There isn’t a first round QB in the draft this year. None of the QBs coming out can start in the NFL. My opinion, of course.

Maybe teams are looking at Geno because of the read option hysteria from last season? Considering that experiment will be done soon, why waste a first rounder to try and experiment with the system?

Of course the hype behind the player will propel him into the 1st round, probably early. Then we can talk about another QB draft bust like we have with so many other 1st round guys who failed to adjust to the pro game. How long is that list?

  63. hanifmiller says: Apr 25, 2013 2:26 PM

  64. kvanhorn87 says: Apr 25, 2013 2:26 PM

The eagles are not drafting Geno Smith at 4, guaranteed. So before it happens, when the eagles trade back it has nothing to do with the browns taking Geno. Can’t wait for the inevitable Cleveland chip revenge storyline or joe banner one ups Lurie. Mark it down that will be everywhere. Giving you your chance to not write that story. No matter what eagles do unless it is trade WITH Cleveland, it has nothing to do with Cleveland

  65. robertocfg says: Apr 25, 2013 2:28 PM

Better spend that pick on defense and throw your 2nd rounder at NE for Ryan Mallett. This QB class is so bad, Mallett would have been the top QB. Plus he’s been two years under Brady and Pats system. Should be a no brainer.

    I’m calling this smoke.

  66. wkdblc52 says: Apr 25, 2013 2:28 PM

If ANY of these teams draft a QB in the 1st round tonight, they’re absolutely nuts ! There isn’t one good QB that should be drafted in the top 32. Are you listening Buff, Clev, Jax and others who are considering it ? Draft the unsexy picks, they’ll do ya alot better down the road. Remember Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, Akili Smith, and Cade McCown when picking tonight.

  67. mrplow3 says: Apr 25, 2013 2:29 PM

So everyone here is a draft expert now?

Yeah, just like Jamarcus and Leaf were sure things, Geno Smith is a sure miss right?

Everyone relax and take a look back at draft history for a little perspective please. One thing we know is everyone including the so called experts are clueless half the time.

Kiper called Mike Williams the best prospect of the last few drafts, he was garbage.

These rookie contracts are tiny now, there’s nothing wrong with taking a gamble on a guy who may break through if you have no QB to begin with.

Do I think Geno Smith is the next great QB, no, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was. He’s got some skills. There is just that much uncertainty with the transition from college to pros. Which is why I love it!

  68. bn2n2me says: Apr 25, 2013 2:32 PM

Taking Geno Smith that early is a bad move. Especailly for a team like Cleveland who has missed or poorly developed drafted quarterbacks in the past. Their best option is to stick with Weeden this year and build around him. Then in a few years you can bring in a new qb who is equipt with tallent around him and give him a fighting chance.

  71. rl52hof says: Apr 25, 2013 2:40 PM

It doesnt matter where they trade at, or for whom. You still have Norv Turner to destroy the Browns like he did in Oakland, Washington and San Diego. As a San Diego Chargers fan we watched AJ Smith and Norv take “the team with the most talent depth in the NFL” to shambles, and at least 2 years of rebuilding.

Norv’s playbook is: 1st down–RB off tackle; 2nd down- swing pass to RB in the flat; 3rd down – pass to TE over the middle; 4th down— kick the ball to the other team. Good Luck Cleveland!
