Browns take LSU DE Barkevious Mingo with sixth pick

Barkevious Mingo, Grant Enders AP

The run on pass rushers and pass protectors continues as the Cleveland Browns took LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo with the sixth overall selection.

Pass rusher wasn’t the biggest need for the Browns but it is a key component of Ray Horton’s 3-4 defense. Mingo will likely serve as a standup pass rushing linebacker in a similar role to the one James Harrison played in for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mingo fits that mold at 6-foot-4, 241 pounds.

With the first five picks playing offensive tackle or defensive end, the Browns had their choice of the best player available at any other position. However, the need for that pass rushing threat apparently was paramount to the Browns plans.

    Worst 1st round ever.

Well I don’t think I saw a single mock draft anywhere call this pick. At least it’s not Geno Smith.

Welcome to the AFC North big man. The toughest division in football.

I hope the browns turn it around, fans deserve it

The poor get poorer. Now they have Kruger and Mingo, two situational pass rushers in a smashmouth division. Good luck.

Poor kid. Might as well just retire.

    Lombardi, you’re letting me down!!!

Mingo had tape issues before the combine and you skip over Chance Warmack???

Warmack could have helped justify the Trent Richardson pick!!!

    You’re going to regret it!!!

The problem with this is the Browns 2nd starting CB is Buster Skrine. Let me say that again. Buster Skrine. And don’t even get me started on the nickel or dime in a passing league.

So you better sack the QB every play in the first 2 seconds or prepare to have your secondary burned constantly.

  12. thefiesty1 says: Apr 25, 2013 9:15 PM

Kiss of death. Stunted his career. 4 years from now he may have a chance to resurect his career if he last that long in Cleveland.

“Bark”evious Mingo goes to the Dog Pound.

Perhaps the most logical pick ever

If they hadn’t gotten rid of Heckert and the good football people in favor of the Banner gang, this pick would have been Floyd, Eifert, or one of the guards. But, instead they had to switch to a 3-4 to win “their way.” Shake my head.

gotta get after the quarterback to win games, pass rushers lead to turnovers and make it easier for the secondary, great pick. Millner woulda been nice too but passrushers r more important than cb. There is still more time to replace skrine. He is def not a number 2 but can be a nickel. Guy plays hard

I like Milliner’s game, but the Browns can’t afford to let 5 surgeries catch up to the kid and bite them in the ass. Mingo is a solid pick and precisely what they need. As others have pointed out, the Browns will have other opportunities to replace Skrine.

Instead of splitting wins with the Squealers last year, I see those “situational pass rushers” keeping Big Jen on his back to have the Browns sweep this year, no?

  23. wojlos says: Apr 25, 2013 11:06 PM

Wow, it’s scary how good Horton will make Kiki Mingo. This scheme will unleash him. Plus, he runs a 4.5 40, which is insane for an olb. Wow very excited!

  24. thegloriousone says: Apr 26, 2013 12:42 AM

Let’s see. You’re flush at D line and in desperate need of a corner.

Let’s pass on the best corner, maybe even the best defensive player, and draft a d lineman so we can try and convert him to OLB.

Maybe they’ll draft for need in the 3rd round.

    God I hate Lombardi.

  25. clevelandschronic2 says: Apr 26, 2013 2:56 AM

Tell me again steelers fans how great last years draft was for you?? Mike adams and chris rainey were your 1st two picks. How’d they do? You guys are so quick to judge a draft its incredible. Hows your great offensive line gonna stop all these pass rushers sheard, rubin, taylor, bryant, krueger, mingo, dqwel. With ray Horton’s attacking 3-4 i think this sounds pretty damn good.

Um, if the Browns had kept Heckert and the “good” football people (Holmgren was/is a HORRIBLE front office guy, proved that in Seattle and then Cleveland), then Mingo very, VERY likely would have been the pick anyways.

Browns would not have taken Floyd. They would have had Rubin and Taylor in the middle of their 4-3 defense. Plus Hughes and Winn backing them up. Floyd wouldn’t start. No way the Browns take a TE that high, especially Eifert.

Maybe you take a guard but that’s pretty dang high for a guard. Maybe Milliner too. But what the Browns likely do though is get another smaller DE to line up opposite Sheard….which Mingo is.

Not saying I’m in love with the new regime but this pick most likely wouldn’t have been any different had Heckert and company been here.

Candygram for Mingo! Candygram for Mingo!

  28. barkymingo says: Apr 26, 2013 11:10 AM

Ya man, that old regime really had us on the right path. I think the record of 14-34 since they took over speaks for itself. Which of their draft picks has made the probowl again?? Oh wait, none of them. I’m a HUGE fan of getting Bingo Mingo. You get after people in this league or you’re toast. Who were the Ravens all pro CBs last year or the Giants the year before. If you have a good pass rush, shut down awesome CBs aren’t a necessity. If that were the case, the Jets with Revis and Cromartie would have been Super Bowl champs. As for saying the AFCN is a smash mouth division?? Nobody in the AFCN finished in the top 10 in rushing last year. Big Ben, Flacco and Ginja Ninja are good Qbs with good weapons.

    @clevelandschronic,

Missed on Rainey, Adams will turn out to be a solid pick.

Look in the mirror chump, you took Weeden.

  30. bnn52 says: Apr 26, 2013 11:20 AM

As a browns fan, I will admit that this wasnt the most glamorous pick they could have made, but you know what it was one of the more solid picks they could have made. Mingo is a solid defensive player who can rotate at both DE and OLB.

Yes a corner would have filled a greater need for us, but as much as I like Millner, the 5 surgeries scared the front office away from him.

They are bulding a solid defense in Cleveland, while the Ravens and Steelers Defenses are rebuilding.

Browns do have some work to do in the mid rounds here, hopefully they can make a move into the second round to grab a corner or guard, then in the third take Shamarko Thomas from Syracuse to beef up the depth at Safety.

I also like the QB from Miami(OH), he can play close to home and work under Campbell/Weeden, then in a couple years take the reigns.

    Lets Go Browns!

  31. barkymingo says: Apr 26, 2013 11:24 AM

    @crownofthehelmet

Weeden will turn out to be a solid pick. See, I can do it too. He had better stats then Tannehill.

  32. TurkeyJoeJones says: Apr 26, 2013 11:39 AM

Joe Banner and the Browns are very predictable. The F/O has avoided addressing obvious needs in the secondary this off-season. I agree that Kruger and Mingo are “situational” pass rushers. There were other very talented players who addressed needs in the secondary. The Browns got more Aaron Maybin than Aldon Smith with this pick.

  33. crownofthehelmet says: Apr 26, 2013 11:41 AM

@barky, that’s your fall-back?! Better stats than Tannehill? You should curb those ultra-high expectations, you’ll need to as a Browns fan.

  34. crownofthehelmet says: Apr 26, 2013 11:43 AM

You should have just signed James Harrison, and drafted Geno Smith.
