Chargers add linebacker D.J. Smith

The Chargers announced the signing of former Packers linebacker D.J. Smith Thursday, one day after Green Bay waived him with a “failed physical” designation.

The 24-year-old Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in October. He started the first six games for the Packers at middle linebacker before the season-ending injury. Smith has notched 82 tackles in 22 regular-season games (nine starts) since the entering the league as a sixth-round pick of Green Bay in 2011.

The Chargers, like the Packers, employ a 3-4 front, and the 5-11, 239-pound Smith projects inside in San Diego’s scheme.
