Chargers add linebacker D.J. Smith

The Chargers announced the signing of former Packers linebacker D.J. Smith Thursday, one day after Green Bay waived him with a “failed physical” designation.

The 24-year-old Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in October. He started the first six games for the Packers at middle linebacker before the season-ending injury. Smith has notched 82 tackles in 22 regular-season games (nine starts) since the entering the league as a sixth-round pick of Green Bay in 2011.

The Chargers, like the Packers, employ a 3-4 front, and the 5-11, 239-pound Smith projects inside in San Diego’s scheme.

    5-11? He’s pretty small.

I was bummed to see him leave GB. He really seemed to have a solid future prior to the injury. But good for him for getting picked up so quickly by another squad. I’m sure he’ll make a strong impression, especially on that defense.

So Packer fans, did we get somebody with potential or will this just be a ho-hum signing that gets cut after training camp?

Reunited with fellow Mountaineer (of Big House Blocked FG Fame) and Franklin Graham son in law Corey Lynch…….

He plays bigger than he is. A bit of a liability in the passing game vs big TEs [only because of his size, he has the speed and skills]. Solid tackler who can contribute if he is healthy. Didn’t pass the physical for the Packers.

Kid can play. You got a potential starter there.

We have a ton of depth at the position, that’s all.

Why not? Bolts have a need at ILB.

He is a sure wrap up tackler and a good person on and off the field. He will help the chargers defense the second he steps onto the field. This coming from a packers fan.

I take it that you have not seen the Patriot’s schedule for this upcoming season yet?

As a Packer fan, I’m glad he’s in the AFC.
