Chiefs make it official, select Eric Fisher with first pick in draft

Eric Fisher AP

The Kansas City Chiefs had long been thought to be targeting an offensive tackle with the first pick in the draft. PFT learned earlier today that Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher would be the Chiefs choice. Now it’s official. The Chiefs have selected Fisher with the No. 1 overall selection.

Fisher is the first non-quarterback to be selected with the first overall pick since 2008 when the Miami Dolphins selected tackle Jake Long out of Michigan.

The Chiefs chose Fisher over Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel. Fisher has been able to overcome concerns over his level of competition in the Mid-American Conference to become the first player off the board. Fisher performed well at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine and impressed teams during the interview process. The impression he made on the Chiefs was enough to lift him over Joeckel in the eyes of the Chiefs front office.

When Alex Smith was in San Francisco, his blindside was protected by a Central Michigan product in Joe Staley. That trend will continue in Kansas City with Fisher likely poised to take over the left tackle position for the Chiefs.

Solid pick. Did anyone else see Eric answer his phone and the camera quickly snap back to the panel (NFL Network)?

And with that – 99% of mock drafts are wrong.

This is why you don’t buy too much into mock drafts.

It’s almost a steal that the Chiefs have the top pick. They are a far more talented team than most in the top 10, and certainly better than any team in the top 5. I mean this team had something like 5 or 6 pro bowlers, and if you are a pro bowler on a 2 win team you know it’s deserving. Not sure if Alex Smith is the long term answer, but they’re headed in the right direction.

Yeah, and then Rich Eisien says they are not going to tip picks…right after they show Fisher’s phone ring and him reaching for it…ridiculous.

Just don’t show the players at all!!

Great pick in Fisher, I was hoping they would take him. He’s a beast and comes with a brute attitude that AR is trying to instill in this team, no more finesse, back to punch you in the face football. Rock On

Kinda glad Jokel didn’t go 1 I was so tired of hearing about him from talking heads being a “safe, solid player” congrats to the Chiefs fans for having a FO with some nuts to go for the nastier more talent potential in Fisher.
Hope AR and all the fans spark up and chief on a fattie, they deserve it.

I’m happy to not see a SEC player taken #1. Props to the MAC.

Rule #1, never draft a player high in the draft who hasn’t played against top competition. Rule #2, See Rule #1.

Still amazed in this day and age a mistake like this can still happen. That being said, the “Chef’s” don’t have a recen record of making smart decisions.

  25. joetoronto says: Apr 26, 2013 4:51 AM

    And still no QB.

  26. spyder1127 says: Apr 29, 2013 12:23 PM

No qb we got Alex this year chase Daniels that has been amazing in preseasons but hasn’t gotten his shot yet cuz he was behind Bree’s his first 3 years learning from him and tyler bray is the best arm to come out of college in a long time and he’s 6 6 he’s deff raw and needs to add some weight but with Andy Reid and his history with making feely and detmer and Vick and mcnabb and kolb look so good that hell be just fine with these 3 or maybe all 3
