Glut of new decision-makers leads to more mystery

John Dorsey, Andy Reid AP

Usually by this time in the pre-draft process, we’ve known the identity of the first pick in the NFL Draft.

And sometimes the second. And third. But this year, guesses are all over the map as to what’s about to happen in five hours or so.

Part of the reason for the uncertainty is the lack of track record for the guys making the choices themselves.

The current owners of nine of the first 14 picks are teams with new coaches, general managers, or both.

That makes it harder to forecast, because in many cases, the guys making the pick have never done it before to establish a pattern.

You can take a stab at Kansas City’s strategy based on positional need, but the Luke Joeckel-Eric Fisher mystery comes in part from the fact GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid haven’t drafted together, so it’s hard to know how they think and work.

What will Jaguars GM David Caldwell do? Or Chargers GM Tom Telesco? You’re as well-served trying to frame the question in terms of former executive Bill Polian, who trained them both. Will Panthers GM Dave Gettleman draft the way they drafted with the Giants when he was on staff there, or does he have his own theories he wants to put into place? Same with Steve Keim, who might blaze a different trail for the Cardinals now that he’s in the big chair.

You can look Joe Banner’s Eagles background for clues as to how he’ll run the Browns, but you can’t assume the Eagles will be run the way they have in the past based on new coach Chip Kelly’s preferences.

That makes tonight nearly impossible to nail down, as so many teams take the first step in creating new identities.

Meanwhile, we have an established standard of greatness here in DC under Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan. #Redskinsaresetuntil2030

Idzik become a legend tonight for NY Jets.

Lets just pray he becomes, you know, one of those really good legends…

Jacksonville picks #2 right? What does it matter who they pick, ESPN and NFL Network will just be in a commercial.

These stories keep getting more and more banal. Can we just cut to the draft already?

Tip for John Dorsey; there’s a great bar-b-q place down in the West 40′s. Get Andy there early and he “might” be finished by 8PM. ……….Andy has called some great ones in the past, just not a lot of them.

I’ll be most interested to see who and when the Jags pick. Now that Gus, has got the whole team and not just a D, I think it’ll be an experience to see what he does with it.

I have a feeling that I know where Idzik’s preferences lie, but I’ll wait with the rest of you, to see how Gang Green begins to “rebuild”.

    Established standard of “greatness”.

One & done in the 2012 playoffs.
    No championships since 1991.

If this is the standard of greatness…the other 31 teams pass on that standard. You can have Shannarat & Cousin Brucie.

It’s recently come to light that the majority of draft rumors have originated from a single obscure web site. Operated by 9 year old Bernie “Buzz” Burton, of Topeka, Kansas. Who goes by the online handle “Growing Buzz”.

Well not every team…there’s still the Browns.

This just in, rumor has it that the Redskins have traded their first round picks for the next 50 years and some additional picks in order to get every pick in the first round of this year’s draft.

    Genius move!!

If it weren’t for the oakland raiders, the redskins would be the biggest joke in the entire NFL. Try winning a playoff game this century.

Big Bad Eagles… I love the draft everyyear no matter what… even the browns, jags fan have hope ri now…

Can the afc east get better already tired of the patriots getting an 8 game cake walk every season

sweded775 its actually 6 not 8 but I get your drift 2 against buff 2 against jets and 2 against Miami at worst that looks like 5-1 to me although my rams went 4-1-1 in the nfc west we couldn’t beat the afc east, or the nfc north I wish we were playing them again this year
