Rams jump up to eighth pick, take Tavon Austin

Oklahoma v West Virginia Getty Images

Tavon Austin’s rocket ride has come to an end at the eighth overall pick of the 2013 Draft.

The Rams, who owned a pair of first-round picks coming into the draft, traded up with the Bills to get the wide receiver. It’s one pick before the first of two Jets first rounders and the Jets have been linked with Austin in several different places in recent days.

The need for Austin is obvious in St. Louis. The departures of Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson leave the offense without much in the way of targets for Sam Bradford at wide receiver. Austin changes that and you can expect the Rams to find plenty of different ways to get the ball into his hands next season. It’s something their offense needed even before those wideouts (and Steven Jackson) left town, so it’s easy to understand why the Rams went up the board to get Austin.

Buffalo’s drop will fuel speculation that they want to draft a quarterback in the first round, just not with the eighth pick of the first round. Ryan Nassib, Geno Smith and Matt Barkley have all been linked with the Bills at different points. They’ll now pick 16th, which could be the spot that they strike for their quarterback of the future. Buffalo also added the 46th, 78th and 222nd overall picks. The Rams will get the 71st overall pick back from the Bills.

The new Santana Moss. Like Santana, will be a Top 5 WR in professional Football within the next 5 years.

    Sweet pick.

  3. suicideisanalternative says: Apr 25, 2013 9:14 PM

hahahaha – of course it happened to the jets.

  4. tedmurph says: Apr 25, 2013 9:15 PM

Jets trade Revis for a high 1rst rnd pick and sit and watch while the Rams jump them and take their guy.

  5. sirsupersouthern says: Apr 25, 2013 9:15 PM

Bills should’ve just taken Tavon. Having CJ Spiller in the backfield and Tavon in the slot would’ve been scary!

  7. melkipershero says: Apr 25, 2013 9:16 PM

This is horrible. Being a Rams fan sucks. Notice most slot guys are undrafted? Welker, Amendola, and Cruz. We blew this. BOOOOOOOOO!

  8. bucrightoff says: Apr 25, 2013 9:16 PM

Well if you’re gonna take a guy like this, makes more sense for a dome team where he can really be a weapon.

  9. skeeeiins says: Apr 25, 2013 9:16 PM

Nice pick. Bout time they got Bradford a weapon.

  10. themagicman1223 says: Apr 25, 2013 9:17 PM

FINALLY!! They get a weapon for bradford, let’s hope Quick pans out.

  11. kingpel says: Apr 25, 2013 9:17 PM

Well I called him overhyped and a slot receiver earlier today, but I trust Snead and Fisher over my alcohol fueled rants. Hopefully, the kid becomes a force for the Rams.

  12. ramcountry says: Apr 25, 2013 9:17 PM

    Rams ruined my night.

And no, it’s not easy to understand why they traded away a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd for this guy.

Good receiver. However, if he doesn’t beef up a little bit, he’ll be out of the league in a few years.

  18. nativeraider says: Apr 25, 2013 9:23 PM

Jeez i wish the RAIDERS would have got this much back from the Fins, Oh well the 2nd rounder should be fine.

  19. melkipershero says: Apr 25, 2013 9:24 PM

Dudes out of a conference that doesnt play D. Hes going to get hammered in the NFL where DTs run like college LBs. why did we trade up? Ryan Swope will go 3rd and is the same player b

  20. NotoriousKDV says: Apr 25, 2013 9:27 PM

Bills do something smart for once. Who knew? If they really do want a QB in the first round then they should trade down again. No one else is going to take Nassib in the first round so why not trade down again and add even more picks.

What a joke, who would trade anything to move up in the draft to get a guy that is 5’11 and 180? Do the rams understand thia isnt Julio Jones or AJ Green right? Lmao i love it though continue sucking it up St. Louis.

  29. fatguystrangler says: Apr 25, 2013 10:12 PM

But I thought it was a lead-pipe cinch the Bills were taking Barkley or Nassib at #8?

Rams Before trade Rams After trade

    Rd 1 – 16th , 22nd 8th, 22nd

    Rd 2 – 46 No Pick

    Rd 3 – 78 71

The ONLY pick they lost was in the 2nd round. Pay attention!

Who??? did you seriously try to justify the pick by talking about those two players lmao. So your bum Rams traded up to get a solid role player??

Are you seriously trying to justify that it’s NOT a good pick before he even plays a down??

This has to be one of the best drafts the rams have had ever!!! So far anyways! Took the most explosive, versatile player in the draft. Will become an immediate impact on offense and a guy teams will be forced to game plan for! He’s a faster amendola, but can hit the homerun from any part of the field. He plays big, never missed a game let alone a practice (unlike amendola) and cost $36 mill less. There is no #1 outside WR in this draft (dez bryant or blackmon), just an overall solid pick! Can’t wait to see him on punt/kick returns, he’s gonna be explosive and def put fans in the seats. Finally, our offense with Cook, Givens, and Austin….may start turning heads like our defense did last year! Excited to see this guy ball out!! Don’t let me get started on ogletree!! Beast draft so far!!! Would love montee ball if he slides or we make a move, adds another playmaker at a position of need. But Safety also needs to be a priority in the 3rd
