Bengals add DE Margus Hunt to already strong defensive line

The Bengals added another talented performer to their loaded defensive line, selecting Southern Methodist defensive end Margus Hunt with the No. 53 overall pick on Friday night.

A native of Estonia, Hunt (6-8, 277) was a champion shot put and discus thrower and set the junior world record in the discus. He took up football at SMU in 2009, where he garnered notice for his unique skill set. Hunt, who notched eight sacks as a senior at SMU, blocked 17 kicks — an NCAA record — in college.

Hunt, who will be 26 in his rookie season, could project to left end in Cincinnati. The Bengals are already deep at end, with Carlos Dunlap, Michael Johnson, Robert Geathers and Wallace Gilberry among the veteran options. Hunt figures to work closely with Bengals DL coach Jay Hayes as he tries to learn the finer points of the pro game.

The Bengals have built a superior defensive line without using a single first-round pick on the group. Time will tell if Hunt is another success story, but say this for the Bengals — they clearly understand the value of a deep defensive line, and they clearly have had a knack for evaluating and coaching linemen. Now they have the luxury of patience as they turn their attention to molding Hunt.

The 2013 version of the Bengals is not only deep, but best team in AFC North. Book it.

Not sure how many teams have better young talent than the Bengals.

They get some solid safety help and yes, they are going to be pretty tough in the AFCN for a while. Who would of thought that?

I guess the Bengals are going with 9 DL again this year. Simmons must be thrilled about the idea of him on FG and PAT blocks.

    Not even close!

Good for my boys weapons with the first two picks and depth with the 3rd. Can we get a poster to say something about character or arrests just so you can feel better about themselves?

Absolute steal for the Bengals. This guy has JJ Watt type potential.

    Really wanted him in Oakland.

Lane Johnson owned this guy in the Senior Bowl. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Looks like Tarzan, plays like he doesn’t know what hes doing. The light came on for him the 2nd half of his senior season though. Best fit for him is 4-3 DE but can play DE in a 3-4 or even some 3-4 OLB.

I hate the Bengals for taking him where they did I was hoping he’d fall to the Packers at 55. Eddie Lacy is a good consolation prize I guess so I can’t be too mad about it.

The only ones who would hate on this selection are Browns,Ravens & Steeler fans. What’s not to like about the guy? 40 of 4.6 a 7foot wing span 38 Reps on the bench (which is insane with his wing span since benching tends be harder then) and he led the NCAA on time it took to get to the quarterback at 2.6 seconds…

He’s only played Football for 4 years and 2 of those he was learning the basics like putting his pads on…It’s perfect fit with the Bengals because he’ll have plenty of time sit and learn progame behind Michael Johnson & Carlos Dunlap and then very well could be replacing MJ the following year.

Not replacing Johnson, he’ll get a long term deal. Replacing the oft injured Dunlap more like.
