Eagles take Ertz, not Geno

The Eagles spent plenty of time studying quarterback Geno Smith.  And they’ve now passed on him twice.

With the 35th overall pick in the draft, the Eagles have selected Stanford tight end Zach Ertz.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who recruited Ertz to Stanford and coached him there, passed on a chance to take Ertz at No. 34, trading down with the Titans.

Ertz, a great pass catcher who needs to develop his blocking skills, gives coach Brian Kelly an intriguing option.  And Kelly knows Ertz well, facing Stanford in the Pac-12 at Oregon.

Though Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert ran a faster 40 at the Scouting Combine, Ertz bested Eifert’s number at the Stanford Pro Day.  Eifert opted not to try to one-up Ertz.
