Eagles take Ertz, not Geno

Ertz AP

The Eagles spent plenty of time studying quarterback Geno Smith.  And they’ve now passed on him twice.

With the 35th overall pick in the draft, the Eagles have selected Stanford tight end Zach Ertz.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who recruited Ertz to Stanford and coached him there, passed on a chance to take Ertz at No. 34, trading down with the Titans.

Ertz, a great pass catcher who needs to develop his blocking skills, gives coach Brian Kelly an intriguing option.  And Kelly knows Ertz well, facing Stanford in the Pac-12 at Oregon.

Though Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert ran a faster 40 at the Scouting Combine, Ertz bested Eifert’s number at the Stanford Pro Day.  Eifert opted not to try to one-up Ertz.

Coach Brian Kelly? Did he leave Notre Dame, then?

  2. eaglesfan036 says: Apr 26, 2013 6:56 PM

I didn’t know the Eagles had a coach named Brian Kelly!

I think you mean Chip Kelly not Brian Krlly right?

  4. section118 says: Apr 26, 2013 6:57 PM

Thank god Brian Kelly isn’t the coach.

  5. justintuckrule says: Apr 26, 2013 6:58 PM

Too bad his first name didn’t reflect the personality of Eagles fans…er..Richard Ertz.

Eagles hire Chip Kelly not Brian Kelly

It would be hilarious if Geno went undrafted. Of course, that won’t happen, but it would be funny.

Chip Kelly should have given his boy Dixon the axe and taken the best player available in this draft…GENO SMITH.

    I blame Tom Brady. Everyone’s gotta copy the Patriot’s 2-headed TE attack…

This is a great pick.I hope they now trade Clay Harbor to somebody.

Another solid pick for Chip…will be hard to cover him and Celek on twin tight end set with djax on the outside.

Wow, I think I love Chip Kelly now. We are finally getting some size in Philadelphia!

    Great pick though.

Brian Kelly ?? Get it together Florio

  17. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Apr 26, 2013 7:23 PM

Know one will care what Kelly’s name is after this season anyway. These Philly homers would be pumped up no matter who he picks. Still in honeymoon phase and Brian or Chip or who cares what his name is, can do no wrong.

I can not believe that the Chip Kelly 11 headed Monster Machine has just gotten bigger and scarier. Teams will bow down to the Chipper. And theres simply nothing you can do about it.

  19. mungman69 says: Apr 26, 2013 7:33 PM

Mostly defense in free agency. Mostly offense in the draft?

Good thing none of the commenters piled on to point out an innocent mistake in this article. Oh, wait..

Chip Kelly stated that big people beat up little people.

  22. schmedley69 says: Apr 26, 2013 7:59 PM

After 14 years of Andy Reid’s flawed philosophy of always drafting “small and fast” over “big,” this is a refreshing change. Watching your team constantly get pushed around by bigger, more physical teams gets really old after a while.

Justintuckrule is a tool. GENO SMITH is not the best player in the draft. And the Dallas cowboys SUCK!!!

  24. phillyphannn83 says: Apr 26, 2013 8:02 PM

After trading for James Casey and now drafting Ertz, say bye-bye to Brent Celek and Clay Harbor. If this was the plan, they should have been traded before the pick(Harbor probably just cut as he probably couldn’t even garner a 7th rounder), whether it was pre-draft or during. Now we have no leverage and will probably just cut them. Feels like a waste, Celek is a beast. I can’t imagine them keeping 3 TE’s.

  25. bricktop02 says: Apr 26, 2013 8:45 PM

Do they trade Celek for a pick?

  26. therealtrenches says: Apr 26, 2013 11:19 PM

They won’t trade Celek. He starts, especially early. But they’ll use all three, And if Harbor can make himself useful, he’ll stick, too. They’ll want depth at TE.

Yes, because seeing people’s dreams dashed is ALWAYS hilarious right?

I thought the best thing that could happen to Geno was to not get drafted by the Eagles because of their fans.

Oops! I was wrong, he got drafted by the Jets.

  28. mazblast says: Apr 27, 2013 12:34 AM

PFT has Brian Kelly on the mind, since they go orgasmic over anything with the name Notre Dame attached to it.

  29. lakermetskins says: Apr 27, 2013 12:41 AM

I good pass-catching TE is required in Kelley’s offense. Good pick.

I keep saying i’m a bit worried about the eagle’s potential as a skins fan. Speed at QB, WR, RB, and TE.

The same old plan is in place against them- get Vick injured-then all bets are off.

  30. mungman69 says: Apr 27, 2013 4:22 AM

Casey will play all over not just tight end. Celek stays this year at least. Harbor may be gone, he’s never shown much.

  31. polapea says: Apr 27, 2013 8:46 AM

Celek and Ertz will make a nice combo. Celek is a much better blocker so he’ll still get most of the snaps at traditional TE. I could see Ertz lining up all over the field to create match-up problems. Most LB’s can’t run with him and he can out body DB’s.

Nice pick . I seen him play dis guy gna be a star
