Geno Smith will attend the draft tonight after all

2013 NFL Draft Getty Images

After he was passed over in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night, West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith said he was heading home. But now he has reconsidered.

Smith will, in fact, be in attendance on Friday night when the second round begins, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

We don’t know what changed Smith’s mind, but it may be that he got a strong indication from some team that he won’t be sitting around for long. A team with a high second-round pick may have already reached out to Smith and told him he’s going to be the guy, and that he shouldn’t go anywhere. (If that team is the Jets, it would especially make sense for Smith to stay in New York.)

Another day in New York City wasn’t the plan for Smith, who hoped he would be spending Friday at the facility of his new team. But at least he can be confident that he won’t still be at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday.

Go home Geno. Don’t let them use you today.

  2. jbaxt says: Apr 26, 2013 10:45 AM

Remember when all the mock drafts, up until about a month ago had Geno being the #1 overall pick. If you had that, you should never be allowed to make another mock draft. McShay and Kiper included.

This will answer the age old question … does ‘pouting affect your draft position?’

  4. marty2020 says: Apr 26, 2013 10:47 AM

His agent told him that pouting and going home did not look good to prospective employers.

  5. nyyjetsknicks says: Apr 26, 2013 10:48 AM

If I weren’t a lock top 10 pick, you would not see me at the draft. A party with friends and family > having millions watch you free fall down the draft board.

  6. packerbackernj says: Apr 26, 2013 10:48 AM

This guy is a turnover machine. Good luck to any team that drafts him for the future, pocket awareness is one of the hardest things to teach. You can either sense the rush or you can’t. I’m sorry, warren moon, but its the truth.

  7. oimakkamio says: Apr 26, 2013 10:49 AM

Well if he need motivation or that chip on his shoulder…he’s got it.

The way Geno acted after not getting picked is exactly why I’m especially happy the Bills drafted Manuel. He did it in college. When the going gets tough and there is adversity, he seems to put his head down, pack it in, and quit. There were only 32 of the hundreds of players picked in the 1st round. If you didn’t get the top 32, it should only motivate you that much harder to prove the 32+ times you were overlooked that they made a big mistake.

  12. flavordave says: Apr 26, 2013 10:53 AM

No time to act like a baby. Man up and show your face.

  13. CKL says: Apr 26, 2013 10:56 AM

I like Geno so I was very glad that the networks didn’t show him sitting around too much. That’s always been so sad to me. And I loved no pick tipping ( though it seemed that analysts still knew as there were some pretty good “predictions”).

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here but it was very cool of Aaron Rodgers to tweet that comment to Smith about good things coming to those who wait.

I do hope for Geno’s sake that he goes somewhere mid to late second that has a serviceable starter. I think he will benefit from pro coaching and a year of sitting.

  14. rpiotr01 says: Apr 26, 2013 10:56 AM

Good move. Be there and take it on the chin if that’s what it comes to.

  15. 28skins28 says: Apr 26, 2013 10:58 AM

  16. jwil007 says: Apr 26, 2013 10:59 AM

Hang in there dude use it as chip on your shoulder….Ala Aaron Rodgers…. Study, Keep you nose clean and listen to your coaches…Come in be humble and earn respect and leadership and you will be ok…..Good luck!

What exactly have these guys proven so far?

  32. spideysdog says: Apr 26, 2013 11:21 AM

so let me see if I got this straight…. Warren Moon gets all huffy and puffy because evaluators call this kid a turnover machine (he had 30 of them), and say he is petulent, aloof and tends to pout and show disinterest. Well…. I think Geno and Warren proved them all wrong last night! (sarcasm). I pity the gm that drops the 2nd round pick on him tonight.

  33. GenXJay says: Apr 26, 2013 11:21 AM

As an Eagles fan… I hope you are way wrong! What this guy did at the end of round 1 last night scares the crap out of me… He flat out quit! We need winners in Philly, not babies like this chump. Let him go Chip, get a QB next year…please!

  37. wvuandsteelers says: Apr 26, 2013 11:28 AM

Use it as fuel. Brees and Favre were 2nd round guys. They turned out pretty good.

What a CROCK! No one is bypassing QB’s based upon race. STOP stirring BS that doesn’t exist. Coaches would put giraffes under center if the giraffe would bring him championships.

This guy is a turnover machine that has a history of pouting. All of his TD passes last year were to his primary receiver, meaning he doesn’t go through his progressions. He is a project, not a ready to start NFL prospect. This is why he wasn’t first round material, not his race!

To bring up race in these situations is really irresponsible & small-minded.

  40. ravenseers says: Apr 26, 2013 11:33 AM

Wow! Really? So he is garbage, a dope, spoil, good for nothing and all that just because he wasn’t pick on the first round?
He is 23 years old, never got in trouble in Morgantown (of all places) and just because he was frustrated in a loss you losers can say all that from what you hear somebody else saying. When did you actually watch a whole WVU’s game in the last 4 years?
You are entitled to your opinion just remember your posts/words for later when you will have to swallow them.
No shame in going on the 2nd or 3rd round Geno! Just ask Brady or Wilson for that matter.

  41. coltzfan166 says: Apr 26, 2013 11:33 AM

As he should. I guarantee he heard all the criticism about his initial decision to not come back.

  42. brewcrewfan54 says: Apr 26, 2013 11:34 AM

Why so much disdain for this guy? He was disapointed. Do most of you guys really base your opinions of him on a 5 second camera shot when he never knew when he was on camera or not?

if the jets draft geno, i run outside and laugh as loud as i can. that would makethe jets the loooosers by far of this draft. i loughed so loud yesterday when the bills played the jets and traded the austin pick out of division. then they picked milliner. really? why you gave up revis in the first place. jets are just a joke!!!

Cam and RGIII were drafted 1st and 2nd overall respectively so I guess I’m missing the part where their race affected their draft status?

  50. jetsfan80 says: Apr 26, 2013 12:03 PM

I was hoping he would change his mind and stay. Its a character issue thing if he were to go home pouting with his tail between his legs. I think he gets drafted early round 2 and walks to the stage with a huge smile on his face. YOU ARE IN THE NFL BRO! BE HAPPY!!!

  57. scoocha says: Apr 26, 2013 12:47 PM

He’ll have a great 10-15 year career in the CFL. Eskimos or Argos, that’s the question.

Geno Smith king of the screen pass; 177 passes behind the line of scrimmage; 28% downfield completion %. All this while playing in the no-defense Big 12. Yeah, makes sense that he should have been #1 overall.
He’s a project, he may be able to succeed with enough hard work but pouting is not the best indicator of that.

  58. eaglesfan290 says: Apr 26, 2013 12:50 PM

It has to be the Jets, they didn’t want to pay for Revis or a plane ticket to get Geno back to NYC lol.

Please do not lump these two guys together. RG3 won 9 games, turned around a moribund franchise, won a division title for the first time in 13 years, and set rookie passing records. He was also crushing the Seahawks before he got hurt. Newton has never won anything or even broken .500. The trajectories of Griffin and Newton are in completely different directions.

  62. ottograham says: Apr 26, 2013 1:19 PM

Noone seems to bring up the fact he is upset about his financial leverage with whoever drafts him. The rookies are already at a financial disadvantage because of the rookie cap. He most likely considered himself top 15 prospect which brought top 15 cash. Well guess day one of the draft proved that otherwise.

  65. wludford says: Apr 26, 2013 2:06 PM

I don’t know why so many media outlets are making a big deal out of the fact Geno didn’t get picked in the first round. Most analysts didn’t have any QBs going in the first round. It can’t be much of a surprise that he didn’t get picked. Teo either. This is just a case of false expectations.

  66. wabbitslayer says: Apr 26, 2013 2:15 PM

I think you guys are funny. Geno’s understanding was that he was going to be a top 5 pick in the draft. I heard indications that he would be a high pick as well and I guarantee you his agent told him as much. He reacts like a normal person would and thought about going home and everyone seems to think that they would react differently! That’s a bunch of bull! What if for some reason he wasn’t selected in the 2nd round he is supposed to continue to be humiliated while the camera gives us close ups hoping that he gets angry or sad! Geno will have a better career than EJ Manuel you can take that to the bank!

  69. 00reo says: Apr 26, 2013 2:19 PM
