Steelers continue to add to run game, draft Le’Veon Bell

The Steelers apparently viewed their running game as a weakness, and are intent on fixing it.

With the 49th overall pick, the Steelers chose Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell.

They agreed to a deal with return man/special teamer La’Rod Stephens-Howling earlier in the day, and had interest previously in Ahmad Bradshaw.

But with Bell, who gained 1,793 yards on the ground  for the Spartans last year, that’s probably not in the cards any longer.

Of all the RBs in this year’s draft I’d say Bell has the biggest upside.

He doesn’t have top end speed but he is a workhorse who can get the ball 25-30 times a game.

I guess we gotta just believe in Colbert on this one, there’s a reason he’s known as the best GM in the league. I thought for sure we were gonna grab Lacey though.

He’s a one cut runner. Perfect for a zone blocking scheme. Please hold off on the Bettis comparisons but I really like this guy.

    Congrats to Le’Veon Bell.

I’ve always liked Merril Hoge but he was a douche announcing the pick. Didn’t shake the commish’s hand, bragged about 6 Super Bowl championships, and then before announcing Bell’s name said it’s not the pick he would have made.

    Yikes.

Hope the Steelers give him #33 on his jersey!

    We are beyond amazing.

    Life is good.

    You lose, we win.

    LOL @ you.

And the Steelers keep re-loading and getting better. Good pick up for them. I think this guy was the better RB in this draft.

This guy is a stud over 1,700 yards and a nose for the end zone just what the Doctor ordered Go Steelers!

    Factor back!!!
    And a good pick

Great pick. Just what we needed.

Steelers first two picks are right in the area of need and Ravens first two directly hit areas of need. Bengals add to a growing base of strong players and Browns continue to rebuild. I love this sport.

Good pickup from a totally unbiased observer

Like I said several times Bell was the best back in the draft. Forget about the best back in the big 10. Bell’s overall game was far superior to Montee Ball’s. I took a lot of heat for saying this but it looks like several NFL GM’s agree with me.

When was the last time the Big 10 produced a good running back at the NFL level. Ever hear the term “Big 10 plodder”? T.J. Duckett, Benie Wells, Ron Dayne, soon to be Monte Ball and La’veon Bell. I’ll admit, Bell is a decent receiver out of the backfield but he’s no Ray Rice, not enough to get over that plodder stigma.

As a Steelers’ fan I love this pick.

  15. lakermetskins says: Apr 26, 2013 11:57 PM

Don’t expect many 55 yard runs, but the guy can carry it 55 times. Mich State had nothing but Lev Bell last year. Underated hands too.

Reminds me of a shorter Chuck Muncie.

  16. mazblast says: Apr 27, 2013 1:07 AM

He’s a workhorse but not a plodder. Possibly exactly what the Steelers need.

All draft picks are risky, running backs more so than other positions, so sometimes all you can do is do your homework, watch video, talk to people who know him and his team–and pray.

Big Ben hands off to Bell, stopped for a loss by Brandon Willams and Arthur Brown. He looks for Wheaton on third and long, INTERCEPTED by Matt Elam who returns it for a TD. Oh my!

Hodge did not knock the pick. He said “I did not make this pick, but it’s a good one.”

Bragged about 6 championships on live TV?!?! Good God, does this classless behavior ever cease?

Omg this franchise is in shambles. As the steel melts…

Bell, the next great rb in the league. The steelers are addressing needs and fast. It’ll be them and the bengals fighting it out for the division title.

This kid is a great fit for us. lacy had an NFL offensive line in front of him. The next Mark Ingram. I love all the couch critics who are so mad about not getting Lacy. He went to a system for him. A pass oriented offense, with 6 man fronts. And not have to be a 3 down back. We needed a thumper,3 down back, who can block and swing out of the back field. Great pick! And yes Hodge is a D bag and the head trauma is catching up. Morganstan100 your first 2 round picks were great. Bengals picks were even better. Browns were okay . But it still doesn’t change the fact you have no life and is a troll on profootballtalk. Your lame. But back to reality Great pick for the Burgh!

Looks like your Dwyer is now FOR SALE. I knew this team was broke. Hope you can sign Jones and Bell. Rookies don’t care a thing about six old trophies. Show them the money!

  24. steel2372 says: Apr 27, 2013 11:59 AM

This is a great pick! All three of our picks have been our needs. I really like the Wheaton pick as well.

  25. steel2372 says: Apr 27, 2013 12:12 PM

Steelers are trying to pick up more picks by trading Dwyer since that needs has been addressed in free agency and the draft. It is a crowded backfield and they still have some depth needs. inside lb and safety should be addressed today and maybe some offensive line help and backup qb.

Just like Ogden was bragging about the Ravens being world champions on live tv.

The Steelers did an excellent job in addressing needs.Love the Jones and Bell and Wheaton picks. And Justin Brown will be an excellent big wr for Big ben to target. The Steelers are going to be battling for the AFCN crown once again. I think the Bengals are the team to beat right now though.
