Broncos add Shaun Phillips

So much for Dwight Freeney and John Abraham.

The Denver Broncos, who have a lingering need at pass rusher after the “fax you” snafu with Elvis Dumervil, have added former Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Phillips, who has played outside linebacker in the 3-4, likely will be converted to defensive end in the 4-3.

Often overlooked in the free-agent class of pass rushers, Phillips quietly had been gathering interest.  His presence in Denver could mean there’s no longer interest in Dwight Freeney.

The problem with Freeney was that he’s interested in making too much money.  And there’s no team currently interested in paying him that much.

I’ll miss SP, he’s a pretty good player. He will get his sacks opposite Von Miller.

But man oh man– sorry Denver but now you have to watch the worst sack dance in the NFL.

Nice combo at RE with Q. Smith on passing downs. Still think Ayers starts.

Phillips was almost as bad as Erik Walden last season.

@greysalon, I don’t mind as long as he’s producing the sacks.

Love this move Shaun Phillips always killed us now he’s on the team cheaper than Freeney or Abraham

Nice move for sure. The mighty, mighty Broncos are the team to beat this year!

Good move. More depth on the D line. It’s amazing to me that this team was 4-12 just a couple years ago. Josh McWho?

He’s starting to be hurt often in his later years but he’s still a baller now. Good pickup and good for the Chargers who are rebuilding. Thanx for the memories Shaun.

Great choice – making your division rival weaker while making your own team stronger. I gotta think Phillips is prioritizing being on a winning team over the $. Meanwhile Freeney and Abraham are watching their market shrink after after the draft. Eventually they are going to sign with a less competitive team than the Broncos for the same money as Phillips.

What on Earth does this story have to do with the Jets?

  21. slickster35 says: Apr 27, 2013 11:23 PM

    The good thing? He’s cheaper.

    The bad thing? He’s done. A non-factor.
