Rams draft Alabama lineman Barrett Jones

The Rams have been willing to gamble on players with checkered pasts.

Now they’ve taken one with as solid a background as it gets.

By using the 113th pick on Alabama center Barrett Jones, the Rams gave themselves a versatile and tough blocker. Jones played the BCS Championship Game with torn ligaments in his foot, suffered the in SEC title game. He won the Outland and Rimington  Awards last year as college football’s top interior lineman and center.

He’s not an overpowering blocker, but he’s tough and smart and has played tackle, guard and center in the past.

The Rams signed veteran center Scott Wells a year ago, but he’s coming off multiple surgeries of his own, and adding Jones gives them another solid part to go along with big-ticket left tackle Jake Long.

Nice pickup. Jones may not be All-World, but he should be solid and hard-working. In most cases, talent and versatility are not synonymous, but Jones may be an exception.

Great kid all around. After the tornado in 2011, he carried his chainsaw around Tuscaloosa and pulled trees off of people.

Barrett played three different positions in three different national championship games. Even if he’s not road-grade enough to start, could be first guy off the bench at all five line positions.

Great pick-up to replace Robert Turner. He will be a great back-up to Wells and might start at LG if Rok Watkins doesn’t work out

While the Shehawks & 9ers load up, the Rams are quietly building up a a strong team. In a few seasons. Rams gonna run the west.
