The Rams have been willing to gamble on players with checkered pasts.
Now they’ve taken one with as solid a background as it gets.
By using the 113th pick on Alabama center Barrett Jones, the Rams gave themselves a versatile and tough blocker. Jones played the BCS Championship Game with torn ligaments in his foot, suffered the in SEC title game. He won the Outland and Rimington Awards last year as college football’s top interior lineman and center.
He’s not an overpowering blocker, but he’s tough and smart and has played tackle, guard and center in the past.
The Rams signed veteran center Scott Wells a year ago, but he’s coming off multiple surgeries of his own, and adding Jones gives them another solid part to go along with big-ticket left tackle Jake Long.
