As strange as it sounds, Eagles looking long-term

It’s not as if the Eagles stood pat in free agency, and they got high marks for adding players such as Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz in the draft.

But they’re still coming off a 4-12 season, and still have thin spots on defense, and general manager Howie Roseman wants to make sure everyone stays focused on the long haul.

“When you’re in the moment and you’re in the draft and you’re thinking about what players you’re going to draft and who you’re going to get and who’s the best available player and who’s the best available player the next day, I haven’t had a chance to sit down and take it all in,” Roseman said, via Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. “If you go into it saying you’re going to fix every single part of something, it’s going to be impossible. If you come out of a draft saying we’ve filled every need, it’s probably not going to be a good draft.

“I don’t think that was our goal, . . . to make sure we had a perfect team in 1 year, it was to start the process of building back a team that’s going to compete every year.”

Toward that end, getting a left tackle and a versatile tight end with their top picks should help. And they tried to fill in with some free agents such as Connor Barwin and and Cary Williams and Kenny Phillips, but the Eagles had too many issues in the secondary and at linebacker to fix in one offseason.

But it still sound strange for a team that was so recently taking the “Dream Team” approach to now be preaching patience.
