Draft review: Minnesota Vikings

Vikings AP

From 3-13 to 10-6, the Vikings had several specific needs to stay closer to their performance in 2012.  If they failed to fill those needs, it’s not for lack of trying.  He’s a look at what they did.

What they needed:  Linebacker, receiver, quarterback, guard, defensive tackle, cornerback.

Who they got:
Round 1: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida.
Round 1: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State.
Round 1: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee.
Round 4: Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State.
Round 5: Jeff Locke, P, UCLA.
Round 6: Jeff Baca, G, UCLA.
Round 7: Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State.
Round 7: Travis Bond, G, North Carolina.
Round 7: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State.

Where they hit: Floyd slid into their laps, and they were ready. The Vikings brought him in for a visit, even though it was believed to be highly unlikely that he’d be available at No. 23. Now, they have a guy who can help the front four become dominant once again.  Rhodes became a safe and predictable needs-based pick two spots later, and the dice-roll came four positions after that, when the Vikings went all in for Patterson, a pass-catcher who is regarded as a project with ultra-high potential.

Where they missed: When the Vikings traded back into round one with the Patriots, many assumed they’d be taking a middle linebacker, like Manti Te’o. They opted to apply a longer-term vision, hopeful of finding help at linebacker elsewhere.  Going with the linebacker could have paid quicker dividends.

Impact rookies: Floyd and Rhodes step right into the starting lineup on defense. Patterson’s primary impact as a rookie would come as a return specialist. Locke will help a largely ball-control offense win the field position battle.

Long-term prospects: The defense continues to improve under coach Leslie Frazier, and the running game continues to be the team’s major strength. The question is whether the passing game can develop, and the presence of Patterson, Greg Jennings, and Kyle Rudolph puts ample pressure on quarterback Christian Ponder. If he can’t respond, we’ll be writing next year about the quarterback the Vikings acquired via free agency, trade, or the draft to get them to the next level.

    Super Bowl, Homeboy.

They started great with the first 2 picks. Then they got impatient, and made the trade. If they took Hunter, I wouldn’t consider that trade bad. He is taller, and can jump higher than Patterson (Ponder could use a guy with more range), I also believe he has better hands, and would have complimented Jennings better.

They reached for Patterson, and if he was the guy they really wanted they should have waited to move up into the early 2nd, or just take him with the 25th overall. That would have allowed them to get a little a few more chances to fill holes like LB, or QB.

Every few years or so the Vikings draft one of the best WRs in the game, and they do it drafting in the 20′s. First Randy Moss fell because he went to a small program (Marshall), later down the road Percy Harvin and his marijuana issues, now the raw and athletic Patterson. They say he isn’t “football smart”, I recall hearing that about Moss before his rookie year 1998. Just watch, Patterson will be one of the best in the game.

Purpleguy & Norsecore, ignore this post.

It’s cute that you all think that you’re going to make the playoffs again.

Remember the 2011 lions? Made the playoffs and then went 4-12 the next year, after having “an amazing draft.”

If you think Adrian Peterson is going to be able to duplicate what he did last year, you’re smoking something that’s still illegal in your state.

The Vikings overachieved. Simple as that. Taking 3rd in the division is their best outlook.

All these idiots complaining they reached at 29 are probably the same idiots that complained that they didn’t make a play for Blackmon a year or two ago. There is a reason you are not a GM. Just enjoy the show.

  12. Norseman says: Apr 30, 2013 9:01 PM

Vikings drafted well, securing 4 key needs with top-rated players- NT, CB, WR & KR were all filled in the 1st round. I think they have a starter in Hodges at WLB as well. MLB is where there is still a question-mark. Mauti, Cole, Henderson, or potentially an acquisition like Urlacher could fill that spot. But of all the needs, LB was the least pressing, given the other possibilities and the fact that playing 60% nickel, it’s just not as important a position.

Rhodes is an instant upgrade to the Vikings secondary, while Floyd upgrades the defensive line. If they play him at NT this year, he’ll upgrade the DL immediately.

Patterson will likely have more of an impact on special teams as a KR and possibly PR, and will likely rotate with Simpson at WR, alongside Jennings and Jarius Wright at slot.

How much Patterson plays will depend on his development, and how well Simpson plays, too. Altogether, and including TE Rudolph, and MVPeterson, the Vikings have all the weapons in place.

It’s up to Ponder to make good use of them. I think he’ll continue to improve, and hit his stride this year.

This draft will help the Vikings better their record over last year, and supplant the Packers as division champs. How far they’ll go in the playoffs is anybody’s guess.

The Minnesota Vikings had one of the best drafts, not only in Vikings history … but, the best draft in the entire NFL in recent years, and last years draft for the Vikings was pretty good.

I can’t remember a single draft dating back for many years, regarding any team that really *WOWED* me. This draft *WOWED* me … BIGTIME … and congrats to the Vikings brass for getting the players that they coveted.

Of course … Bear, Lion and Packer fans disagree with my opinion … it’s only because … deep down … they know it was just as good.

    A+

    ________________

You think the Vikings would have learned not to draft KRs early. It’s easier for them to get injured, and then they cause cap issues. Just look at DeSean Jackson, and that guy you traded 6 weeks ago.

If they didn’t make that trade, they still could have got one of the 5 best WRs in this class. Then still address, either QB or KR later on,

  15. comebackid says: Apr 30, 2013 9:13 PM

The defense was pretty damn good last year with Jasper Brinkley at MLB.
To me that means that replacing him wasn’t of the utmost importance.
It seems some think they lost a Patrick Willis-caliber player and are screwed because they can’t find an adequate replacement.

They got 3 incredible prospects which doesn’t mean they’ll all be all-pros but it’s more than any other team can say.

Get off it already, people. Does anyone remember Braylon Edwards?

  22. 27xplayoffs says: Apr 30, 2013 9:32 PM

My enthusiasm has definitely been tempered a bit. On Day 1, they absolutely hit it out of the park with Floyd and Rhodes. I’m not quite as sold on how much they gave up for Patterson, but we’ll see if he’s more Randy Moss than Jerome Simpson. I think the thing that worries me the most about the trade is why did the Pats (who need WRs almost as bad as the Vikes) pass on Patterson if he’s that good? Locke in the 5th round was a terrible pick. Why would you waste a 5th round pick and then say Kluwe is still in the running to compete for the job? Makes no sense, they have other needs that are much higher priority than punter. Are Kluwe’s off-field activities that much of a distraction? Seems almost punitive to me and not in the best interest of the football team. They finally address LB in the 7th round?!!?? I get that it’s hip to say that the middle linebacker isn’t as important as it used to be, but you still need to suit one up if you’re going to run a 4-3 defense.

    Skol VIkes!

  23. purpleguy says: Apr 30, 2013 9:32 PM

The first two first rounders will be quality NFL starters, but the draft will likely be seen as a success only if Patterson pans out. Even with all these picks, unfortunately, the team success depends upon our QB. And why anyone pays attention to Tokyo’s pokes with sharp sticks is beyond me.

  24. youngs79 says: Apr 30, 2013 9:33 PM

Tokyo, can’t wait to kick the Packer’s ass twice next season. The Packers are one hit or concussion away from being a very ordinary team. In the past 3 seasons, no QB has been sacked more than Rodgers. How long do you think he can keep taking a beating? The only reason you won in the playoff game was our QB was hurt. How would you do with your backup?

  25. vikingstillidie says: Apr 30, 2013 9:36 PM

  31. lambeauwest says: Apr 30, 2013 9:54 PM

No doubt MN helped themselves in this draft but they did give up a lot to get Cordelle (sp?) in terms of depth, something draft master TT has a Ph.D. in. WRs are a tough nut to figure out since so many are primma donnas. MN was at least smart enough to get one of GB’s former studs in Greg Jennings (if you can’t beat em, sign their post-prime free agents).

Consider MN has run great WRs out of town in Moss and Harvin.

  32. ampats says: Apr 30, 2013 9:55 PM

There is a lot of delusional Packers, Lions and Bears fans in these comments.

Anyhow, us Vikes fans need to temper our enthusiasm a bit for Patterson. It will be a few years before he becomes a true receiving threat. Though he will likely be more than adequate in Percy’s place taking the short pass for good yardage.

We are still a year away from being at the right place to make a real run at the Super Bowl.

I hope Packers fans enjoy mortgaging their future on Rodgers. Though I do think he is worth about that much money.

I hope Bears fans enjoy their porous O-line like they always have

I hope Lions fans catch a break with all that talent.

I have never seen a fan base do so much bragging in April.

What seems to be overlooked (big time) is that the NFL is a QB driven league. Doesn’t matter if your new shiny WR has a ton of potential or if you overpaid for Greg Jennings, what is missing is a decent QB that can throw into tight windows.

Lets talk during the season when the Vikings crash to earth and Ponder looks like the bust he really is. Grade your draft with any letter you want but its the number in the Wins column that will tell the story.

  43. tokyosandblaster says: Apr 30, 2013 10:16 PM

    Ahahahahahahahaha

    You kids are crazy.

Did Dickerson have anywhere near 2105 the next year?

And saying the packers are done if Rodgers goes down? Dumb. Same thing for the Vikes if Peterson goes down (which is FAAAR more likely).

The Vikings had a cute little draft. I sincerely hope that rookie is on Nelson or Jones. Rodgers will have a field day. Ponder can’t get the ball to Patterson, so he becomes moot.

The packers? They were better than the Vikes last year, and things haven’t changed.

” I’m am NO Packer fan, but the last time Rodgers missed a game Matt Flynn came and broke records Rodgers might never see.”

Last I checked Flynn had moved on- twice in fact. Backup QB Harrell makes Joe Webb and Caleb Haine look like pro bowlers.

Great draft for the Vikes- took some chances, but playing it safe means falling behind in the NFL.

  45. vikesfanforlife says: Apr 30, 2013 10:20 PM

what are you guys talking about when you say the Vikes gave up too much to move up for Patterson? they gave up their second to move up, plus a 3rd, a 4th, and a seventh. let’s look at this. Instead of having 2 first rounders and a second rounder, they moved up to take CP so he basically was their second round choice. yes they gave up their third rd choice, then gave up a 4th rd choice, but they had 2 4th rd choices so no loss there. then they traded away a 7th. however, they made another late trade to re acquire another 7th rd choice so they still ended up with 3 7th rd selections. the way I look at it, the Vikes really only lost a 3 rd rd choice here. it made perfect sense to do this. but hey, all the haters can bash all they want. if Ted Thompson had made this trade, packer trolls would be saying how much of a genius he is. lol

  46. purplepunisher says: Apr 30, 2013 10:26 PM

Nice draft. For those Vikings fans who can’t remember 1967 let me refresh your memory about having 3 #1 draft picks. Clint Jones picked at #2 in the first round in 1967. Never amounted to much. He had a couple of long runs but totaled just over 2,000 yards in his career. Certainly a bust.

Gene Washington picked at #8 in the first round. Average receiver at best. Had a couple of good seasons but the other Gene Washington out in San Fran was the star.

Alan Page picked at #15 in the first round in 1967. HOF which doesn’t do him justice. He was incredible. I remember watching him play. At 250 lbs today he’d be undersized but he was a beast. Many many times her catch a RB 25 yards down field or be by an OG and on the qb in a flash.

So… 2013… Picking at 23, 25, and 29 consider yourself lucky if 1 of the three turns out great. All could be fantastic or all could be Clint Jones. No one knows at this point. Not even the guys who drafted them. If they did there would never be a first round bust. But there are. So why not calm down and wait for the on field production.

Patterson has incredible field vision and decent hands but he’s far from being a polished WR. He’s not Moss. No one is.

Floyd could be good. Or he could be jimmy Kennedy. We’ll see.

Rhodes seems to have good man to man cover skills and has size and speed. At this point I think he’s going to be the biggest help.

Having said all that… Packers fans should be worried. Vikings will be improved this year. Packers are regressing year after year. Their defense is weak and their OL is going to get their qb killed if they don’t improve. But they have a great qb. And solid receivers and they’re going to be tough to beat.

And Detroit should be scary for both the Vikings and packers if they can solve their OL issues.

So all the homers… no matter which team they support… should shut up.

Who taught you how to use adjectives? Do you think “hapless, tasteless” is ever going to catch on? Dude, I know you are probably hindered with your parents being cousins, but for the love of god man, pick up a dictionary, then a thesaurus.

Did I mention that Ted Thompson was named NFL Executive of the Year, TWICE? If I didn’t, I meant to. Do you know the Vikings are both hapless AND tasteless? Believe me, I know.

“Vikings fans seem obsessed with the Packers”,
another post from yet another packer troll. This is supposed to be about a Vikings article. Whatever.
Austin is very good, but his 5′ 8″ 174 lbs. scare some teams. Patterson is 6′ 2″ 216.
Was Austin worth trading up for a 1st/2nd/3rd/7th? For the Rams, he was.
The Vikings also felt their Patterson trade up to 29, was worth it. Waiting to their next selection at 52 for a WR was not what they wanted to do. Patterson is raw, and has poor route running. OK, I suppose thats why teams have coaches….Vikes will have to just make do with Jennings, Rudolph, and All-Day till up to speed. Not too bad.

  66. tokyosandblaster says: May 1, 2013 8:54 AM

So people saying Patterson is the next Randy Moss are spot on, but people saying Eddie Lacy will improve the Packers’ run game are delusional because he hasn’t played a down?

Nothin to see here, folks, just fans of a team that can’t win the big game trying to sound better than the best franchise in the NFL.

  67. ejmat2 says: May 1, 2013 8:56 AM

I’m truly LMAO at the people that say the Vikings reached or gave up too much for Patterson. How do you figure? Let’s analyze this.
    1) He was projected to go any time after Austin and had many teams eyeing him. Last I checked Austin went 8th. Patterson was picked 21 spots later at 29. How is that a reach?
    2) The Vikings gave up a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th rounder in return for NE’s #29 pick. Let’s look further.
    a. The Vikings moved up 23 spots from 52 to 29. Therefore their 2nd round pick becomes another 1st round pick.
    b. Their 7th round pick was later traded to the Bucs for L. Blount and later traded back to the Vikings from the Bucs for their 6th round pick. The Vikes moved back 7 spots and received the pick they originally traded to NE back in the 7th.
Result: In essence the Vikings only gave up their 2nd and 3rd round picks to move up 23 spots to get an explosive WR/KR & PR. I’d say the Vikings came out pretty well there.

For Filthymcnasty1 – Saying they needed 10 first round picks is pretty ignorant. Especially, when they came within one game of the division title with an “iffy” at best QB. They beat your beloved Packers and pretty much handled them in the other game during the regular season. If it weren’t for Ponder throwing two 4th quarter picks in the endzone, the Vikings would have not only won that game but the division as well. The Packers had to rely on the Vikings using a QB in Joe Webb in the playoffs that hadn’t played a down all season. Don’t be so high on yourself. Maybe you should worry more about your team finding a way to stop Adrian Peterson and not gloating after “only” giving up 99 yards in a playoff game to him. Especially when you knew he’d be getting the ball more often than not given their QB situation that game. In 3 games he had over 400 yards rushing against the Packers. Yet, the Vikings are the team that needed 10 first round picks according to you. It doesn’t look like the Packers are that much better.

  68. ejmat2 says: May 1, 2013 9:03 AM

Correction to my post above. In essence the Vikings only gave up their 3rd and 4th round picks to get Patterson. My apologies.

  69. seals1 says: May 1, 2013 9:18 AM

    1. You always want your team to take chances and the vikes did. Patterson looks sick, love the pick.

    2. Watching the players come off in the second the only WR that was left was Allen and he dropped like a stone. Take Patterson every time and shows again the vikes brass knew when these guys would come off the board.

    3. You can’t blame Floria with his love affair with Geno Smith being the mountaineer but he just isn’t that good. Ponder is well ahead of Smith now and in the future.

Nice draft Vikes. Purple got better immediately.

  70. gcounterman says: May 1, 2013 9:59 AM

I love all the Ponder haters. We don’t need Tom Brady in Minnesota. We need a guy who can throw 5 yard passes, in hopes the receivers break for big YAC numbers, with a good completion percentage. We need him to be able to air it out, but not 20 times a game… just enough to keep the defense honest.

Ponder showed good signs of development at his position during the second half of last season. We should know how high his ceiling truly is by the end of this coming season.

It seems as Vikings fans could hardly wait 3 days.

Shaggytoodle, Tokyosandblaster and Filthymcnasty are some of the most worried people I have ever seen. They have nothing better to do than follow Vikings threads and tell us their “opinion”, which we all know is undecuated and biased.

I’m gonna finish with this to chew on: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are the worst thing to happen to Quarterbacks in Football. OMG WHY, you ask? Because everybody thinks you need one to win championships. How many has Peyton won, One and how many as his younger brother won, 2. So now, Every body thinks you need a Stafford to Megatron connection that can throw for 2000 yards, but still lose. They lose becasue they cant manage ball games! They score in a minute and then the opponent has a lengthy scoring drive and the score is still 7 to 7.

How about this: Christian Ponders 2nd year stats (which are really his 1st year stats since he didnt have a training camp) are about the same as Joe Flacco’s 2nd year stats and wtf did he just do?

No its not ok. Your team wasted a pick on a RB with no toe. Your only bet is Franklin and I believe he is good but not good enough behind your excuse of an o-line.

  79. tokyosandblaster says: May 1, 2013 2:29 PM

I’m not worried input the oline. You think shariff t-Rex Floyd is going to come in and be amazing? Well, I guess we can think out offensive linemen will too, right?

    No?

    Tell me more.

I love how all your picks are going to be pro bowlers and everyone the packers pick is going to be a bust.

You probably understand exactly what a championship team looks like, what, from all your Super Bowl wins.

  80. theytukrjobs says: May 1, 2013 2:42 PM

People really miss the mark with the Vikes needs and their draft.

Vikes played nickel over 60% last year. Middle linebacker isn’t as big of a need as people let on. Having Floyd in the middle will make our MLB’s job even easier. It is okay that they used two late rounders to address this.

People talk about how Patterson can’t contribute because he’s so “raw”. Man I couldn’t disagree with this more. So off the mark that I can’t believe these guys call themselves journalists.

First off, it is pretty rare and impossible to predict a WR to have a big impact their first year unless they are a top 5 or 10 pick. 800 yards is considered an absolutely monster year 1 for a WR. 500 yards receiving is very solid for a rookie. The last WR to win ROY honors was Percy Harvin with less than 800 yards receiving and he did most of his damage on simple swings, screens, reverses, and in the return game. Or put another way, the exact same strengths that Patterson brings to the table.

If Patterson can average 30-40 yards per game receiving, while rushing 1 to 3 times per game, and is stellar in the return game, the Vikes will have improved their team and gotten very good value for a 29th pick.

If he can average 50 yards receiving per game and give us something in the return game he will have dwarfed Calvin Johnson’s rookie year.

I just don’t think people realize how low the bar is for rookie WR’s. Judging if a rookie has immediate impact has so much more to do with special teams because so few of them light it up receiving.

Say it isn’t so! Logical actually had a post that was thought out and well written (whether or not I agree 100%) instead of just random BS about Washington.

But, some of the Packer trolls really need to get a life. I’m looking at you shaggy, tokyo, filthy (and a couple of others). The sheer amount of times that you felt you had to come on this post and put out some lame comment is just laughable. I sincerely hope something in your life takes a turn for the better soon so your pathetic lives don’t push you over the edge and cause you to do something society will regret.

  82. bobnelsonjr says: May 2, 2013 10:07 AM

Trading away draft picks, adding bad characters and poor locker room guys is a recipe for disaster.

This draft was a real bust that they will regret for years to come.

No 2nd round pick. No 3rd round pick.
A punter in the 5th round is just laughable.

    D minus draft grade.

GB had a good draft also but not as good as ours. I don’t understand the envy that bobnelsonjr, toykosandblaster and filtymcnasty1 have with out squad? they troll every Viking post. Get a life guys. It is a professional sports game I hate to break it to you but the Packers could give a crap about you guys. Most Packer fans I meet are pretty humble football fans but then I think of people like you guys.

  84. lnfinite says: May 7, 2013 12:52 AM

Vikings finish 1st in NFC North Division with free agents and the Draft. Rodgers ends up on IR because they forgot how to protect him. Green Bay finishes in last place. Suicide watch enforced in Wisconsin for 3 months.

Fear is why so many Packer fans post on Viking stories. Get the shots in while you can, this time next year all you will brag about is the past yet again………………………………

  85. mss2177 says: May 7, 2013 11:55 PM

Seeing as though the Vikings have two first round picks next season I’m not sure why they didn’t go completly nuts and package one of those and some later picks this year and go up to the top of the second round and get Manti Teo! I think our draft grade which I base on potential of players picked was worthy of a A but to make that move would have made it a A+ as we would have filled all four of the holes in our squad with potential star players. How can people knock the packers draft? Datone Jones is going to be the pass rushing end they desperatly lacked in their front seven and I think he will be a absolute beast. Eddie Lacy was the best running back in the draft and should never have fallen to the second round let alone to Green Bay who have finally got a stud at running back who only improve what is arguably the best offense in the nfl which is a very scary prospect. Cobb, Nelson and Jones plus Finley at tight end is still going to be a nightmare for any team to handle regardless of losing Jennings and driver who were injured most of last season. Lacy will help open the passing game as teams will have to account for him in the backfield. People are questioning Green Bay not taking a stud offensive linesman? How often has Ted Thompson ever taken a stud at this position? He knows how to find them late in the draft and having taken two in this draft you can rest assured with two starters also coming back from long injuries last season that there will be plenty of depth. All in all I think Green Bay are going to be one hell of a football team if they stay healthy this season but if the Vikings can get consistency and a little production out of ponder then we will be right in the mix.

  86. mss2177 says: May 7, 2013 11:59 PM

Why don’t both pack and vikes fans join together to laugh at the lions and bears! Both very good football teams when they turn up and play but there is Definatly a divide coming between us and them in regards to the level of football team.
