Patriots beat Dolphins to punch for Josh Boyce

AP

The Dolphins were on the phone, and Josh Boyce’s dream had just come true.

The TCU wide receiver was just told he was going to be the 104th pick in the draft, that he was headed to Miami.

But a few minutes later, he got another call, and with the 102nd pick, the Patriots changed his travel plans.

As soon as I got off the phone the Patriots called me,” Boyce said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “You never know. I’m just glad God gave me the opportunity to get drafted. I can go forward from there.”

And for a guy who has worked with his share of NFL talent, Boyce now gets to catch passes from the best quarterback he’s been around.

Boyce was a high school teammate of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, and played with Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton at TCU.

“It’s great,” Boyce said. “All three of them are great guys, great quarterbacks. I’ve been blessed to play with great quarterbacks my whole career.”

And thanks to Bill Belichick making a quick call, Brady’s pulled off another last-second win over the Dolphins, getting another target for a remade receiving corps.

  1. I’ve read he’s a good player. As a Patriots fan, I just hope that at last we hit on a couple of receivers and Dobson and Boyce combine for something more than 30 receptions for 450 yards and a TD before ending up being released in a couple of seasons.

  2. Patriots are spying on all 31 other war rooms. Confirmed.

Expect a CBS Sportsline story tomorrow.

  3. This kid doesn’t know how lucky he really is. Catching tight accurate passes from Tom Brady or catching those wounded ducks above, below, and behind him from Tannehill.
    You hit the lottery kid.

  4. Yawn. If Boyce someday becomes a better player than whoever the ‘Phins would have lost to move up ahead of the Patsies to pick him, this might be an actual story then. For now, however, it’s just meh.

Why would a team call a guy before they were on the board?

I don’t think that’s uncommon. Remember how Matt Light was on the phone with the NYJ back in 01 then the Pats called and he said the NYJ were talking to him. The Pats totally scooped him from the NYJ.

  6. Tom Brady > Ryan Tannehill is the top reason the Patriots will be a better team until either Brady retires or the Dolphins find a better quarterback.

Not really sure how much of the field Boyce will see. Julian Edelman was coming on and Amendola did not get paid more than Welker because they think he’ll be a part time player. They also drafted Dobson. He’s a fourth receiver on a team that already uses two tight ends.

  7. The Pats picked up 5 WRs and lost 2. They were lucky to have Welker because the TEs had alternating injuries. That inflated his numbers for sure. If just ONE of the outside WRs performs well, I think the Pats offense will be better than last year.

And defense? They picked up players at just about every position. That has to improve their defense considerably.

Barring injuries (which isn’t fair to say because they have a number of injury-prone players), the Pats have to be the odds-on favorite to win it all. Homefield advantage will be needed to beat Denver.

Patriots are a joke. It’s fun watching them collapse.

  9. People forget Aaron Hernandez is more of WR than a TE the way the Pats use him. I throw him in when I look at the Pats WR’s.

  10. LOL– even merely picking a mid-round player before another team picks him is supposed evidence for Belicheat’s “genius”.

  11. Who is gloating now fins? You thought you sucker punched the Raiders? How does that feel? What goes around will come around and without even a kiss to go with it! Ha ha ha!!

  12. Looks like more than a few teams were probably looking at this kid. As long as he is precise with his route running and has decent hands, he will enjoy a long career in New England. If he has problems staying on point and gets fumble fingers, then Brady will run him out of town in a New York minute. See you week 1 at the Ralph kid!

  13. Except the Fins do this all the time. They call a guy and say they are picking them and then don’t. Just like they did with Jordan Reed, telling him they would pick him then trading the pick.
Most likely they knew the Pats were listening and suckered them into picking him. Just like they did with Mallett. Good luck with him.

I guess as a Boston sports fan it’s pretty easy to forget about the real winningest franchise in all of sports which is the NY Yankees and their 27 World Championships.

Yeah right, there were 28 other teams that “collapsed” before the Pats did last year. This is the same tired line that gets said every year about the Pats.

They’ll win the division this year, likely with a bye and win at least the divisional championship game.

  17. It’s tough to imagine a bigger sense of relief than thinking you’re going to be a Miami Dolphin and then realizing you’re going to play for just about anyone else.

  18. Can Boyce play safety? Or cb? How about TE? Belicheck is such a genius he hasn’t had a good defense in 6 years. Keep
Picking em Harmon safeties. And 2 rookie wide outs are gonna step in a learn a complicated offense. Jordan, wake, ellerbe and wheeler all coming to get Brady. No longer odrick on the outside

I don’t see the broncos as the unbeatable juggernaut as everyone else sees, nor do I see the pats as such. There is turnover on both teams at key spots on both teams that need to play out plus new additions. I partly agree with the home field tho, but I can see Brady besting manning on the road in the playoffs but Manning has a smaller shot on the road.

  20. So he goes from being a reach pick that John Gruden doesn’t understand (a Dolphin pick), to a great value pick up with upside, by the “Genius”.

  21. If either one of these guys pans out, the Pats offense is going to be better, by a long shot (literally) than last year. Can’t wait!

  22. To all of you who hate the Patriots for being great and spend your time blogging on Pats-related posts, all I have to say it that, for just 20 bucks, I just bought an autographed Vinatieri picture of him kicking the snowbowl field goal and, man, is life great!

I always thought it was such a waste of life to go around, as a Red Sox fan saying “Yankees suck”. So, as the Pats are THE team, I must say that your life must be pretty hollow to be here posting trash. As for me, the picture’s on my wall! ROFL!

There’s no saying that the Pats will win it all this year, BUT, life is SO good being a Pats fan that you don’t find US wasting our lives trashing your team.

    Go Pats!
