Chargers, Vikings not interested in Tebow

Jets Seahawks Football AP

Tuesday saw quarterback Tim Tebow become a free agent, after no team claimed his contract on waivers.  It also saw the parade of teams not interested in Tebow grow by at least two.

Appearing on XTRA 1360 in San Diego, G.M. Tom Telesco faced the Tebow question.

“Tim Tebow is out there,” one host said.  “Would you guys ever?”

Ever what?” Telesco said with trepidation in his voice, sparking laughter from the two hosts.

The host then explained himself.  “Would you guys think about it, possibly bring him in for a visit?”

“We’re really happy with the two quarterbacks we have, and we drafted one in the seventh round that we think has developmental upside, so we’re happy with our three quarterbacks right now,” Telesco said.

In other words, “No.”

Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman addressed the Tebow topic during a visit to PFT Live.

“Other teams are saying they’re not interested,” I explained to Spielman.  “This is your chance to say you’ve got no interest in Tim Tebow.”

“He is a great individual,” Spielman said.  “I spent some time with him when we came out in the draft but we’re very satisfied where we’re at with our roster right now.”

In other words, “No.”

Still, 31 teams can say, “No.”  They can shout, “No!” followed by “way” and perhaps a profane word in the middle.

All it takes is one team to whisper, “Yes.”  Now that Tebow is a free agent, any team can.

I knew Tim Tebow was gay. Spielman even inferred as much.

“I spent some time with him when we CAME OUT in the draft…..”

I didn’t suspect Mr. Rick though. Good to know people are starting to become more comfortable in their skin, even in a man’s sport like Football.

Nick Barnett is a Free Agent, how come were not asking every single team if they “would ever” sign him?…the F is peoples deal w/ Tebow man! sooo sick a this! I love the guy but jesus hes a Free Agent not a piece a sh

I can’t believe the Vikings are passing on this obvious upgrade.

Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it.

Tebow courted the limelight…at least he’s never discouraged it…and no team wants to take a flier on the kid because of the circus that comes along with the player. Too bad, really, because he’s a football player.

  5. 2ruefan says: May 1, 2013 9:14 AM

Actually, I would be HIGHLY intrigued to see a player like Tebow running the option with AP. Seems like something that could be a GREAT deal of pressure on the defense.

  6. dawgswillhunt says: May 1, 2013 9:17 AM

Even Jesus wouldn’t sign Tim Tebow.

  7. tokyosanbblaster says: May 1, 2013 9:22 AM

Tebow will be working for some network, maybe covering Packer games. Tim come to the tailgaiting camper with me and filthymcnasty1! Party! Go Pack Gooo!

  8. GM says: May 1, 2013 9:33 AM

How about some real news. Every team already said no when he passed through waivers. A new article every time a team declines is childish. Real news will be when a team says yes, whether it be the nfl, cfl, etc.

  9. vikings1976 says: May 1, 2013 9:35 AM

It’s amazing nobody would want him considering all this read option crap going on.

  10. theytukrjobs says: May 1, 2013 9:35 AM

Vikings already have an athletic 3rd string QB who can’t throw. They addressed that need a few years ago with Joe Webb.

  11. lovefootball4life says: May 1, 2013 9:42 AM

His skills are weak in areas but a big reason he won’t get a job is the media following. This is a perfect example. We are reporting on teams not interested.

I really think this Tebow hate is getting out of control and is unwarranted.

The reality of the situation which everyone fails to acknowledge is that when Tebow was given an opportunity to play QB in the league, he took a 1-4 team to the divisional round of the playoffs, including a playoff victory in which he passed for over 300 yards against the league’s top ranked defense. Did he have a great supporting cast around him? Yes. But as Rams fans, we have been clamoring for years that Bradford needs a better supporting cast. So you can’t have a double standard; Tebow used what he had and led the team to marginal success.

In New York, he was not given an opportunity. It’s not that he couldn’t win the QB job in New York; it’s that they stubbornly refused to bench Sanchez, and when they finally did, they stubbornly refused to give Tebow an opportunity to play.

If given the choice, I would take Bradford as my QB obviously. But cut the :!: with rubbing Tebow’s face in the dirt. He doesn’t deserve it.

At least you’re combining two teams’ lack of interest into one post. That’s progress, I guess, but still shameful.

  14. vikes1980 says: May 1, 2013 9:53 AM

Tebow stinks… I knew when he was drafted he would never make it in this league…good luck working at McDonalds

  15. zn0rseman says: May 1, 2013 9:55 AM

You know, it has become very apparent that the media hates this guy not because of his ability to play QB but because he is an outspoken Christian and the son of a mother who tried to have him killed in the womb. They hate him for who he is, nit what he is. They are gleefully waiting to trumpet his failings in the NFL.

  16. questforthesixthnotthelast2013 says: May 1, 2013 10:21 AM

Yeah, when he threw that bomb to Denarius Thomas in the playoffs, yeah it was just a lobb huh, he wasn’t on target was he? Yeah he can’t throw!
Whatever, that’s why I’m glad the niners don’t listen to these so called draft experts.

Anxiously awaiting the next Tebow story….

  18. melikefootball says: May 1, 2013 10:26 AM

When the religion side starts commenting it always is, the poor me side, always an answer, the answer here is he was a player that Denver took a chance on, he was and still is a non NFL factor at QB. Lets get a grip here folks, he was paid by two teams to be a QB and both saw the light real quick.

  19. filthymcnasty1 says: May 1, 2013 11:15 AM

The QB bar is too high for Speilman, where Donovan McNabb set the standard for veteran QB desperation.

  20. navyeoddavee9 says: May 1, 2013 11:18 AM

Tebow and Te’o on the same roster, would be awesome, not really. I think the Te’o distraction is enough for the Bolts, but imagine Hardknocks, with both these guys

  21. metitometin says: May 1, 2013 11:24 AM

The thing is, the last time we actually saw Tebow running actual plays on the football field, he was winning games left and right for the Broncos. So how do we know he can’t play at this level? The Jets never game him a chance to see what he could do. They ruined him because they hated him and then they took shots at him, telling the media he looked awful in practice. What a bunch of garbage. I’m not much for his religious stuff but I think he deserves a chance to play in the NFL, whether at QB or another position. He has the intangibles and he won 8 freaking games for the Broncos.

  22. thegreatgabbert says: May 1, 2013 11:30 AM

Tebow is the same age as Ponderp, and has the same career passer rating along with a better winning percentage. While playing for a poorer team.

Don’t think these middle aged front office temps like Telesco and Speilman should be so quick to turn up their snot noses.

  23. rajbais says: May 1, 2013 11:32 AM

Face it. Within 18 months Tebowmania turned into Tebow Defiance.

He’s a short yardage back and guys like Donovan McNabb were wrong to say he can’t play another position because he’s not athletic like Denard Robinson.

Ever heard of QB turned TE Owen Daniels???

Btw, what about the ex-QB turned left tackle Lane Johnson??

His critics need to be more open minded, but Tebow himself can’t refuse change.

  24. Rick Speilman is a Magician says: May 1, 2013 12:20 PM

Why would we sign Tebow? Christian Ponder is going to be the greatest quarterback of all time, Adrian Peterison the greatest Running Back of all time and Cordarrelle Patterson the greatest Wide Receiver of all time. We’re going to win the Super Bowl for the next 3-5 years!!!! Skol Vikes! Yaaaay!

Too bad Vikings fans can’t say the same thing.

    ________

Isn’t your quarterback Blaine Gabbert? And wasn’t your team the first to turn up their noses at Tebow?

  27. mshawn75 says: May 1, 2013 12:48 PM

Enough. When has a third string quarterback (which he was at the end of last year) ever deserved such attention for being cut. Are you “talking heads” going to make the same big deal when the Redskins get rid of Rex Grossman. Hey, he won more playoff games and made it to the Super Bowl (in Chicago). Enough already.

    Rick Spielman interpretation 101

    1. Identify Rick’s true motivation
    2. Apply reason and logic
    3. Listen to what Rick says
    4. If 3 contradicts 1 assume the opposite of what he is saying is true, if not assume it is the truth.

See for example Percy Harvin trade and Rick’s comments regarding the same.

  30. whatjusthapped says: May 1, 2013 1:14 PM

Tebow is a better QB than Ponder will ever be but to sign Tebow, the Vikings will have to admit to themselves and the whole world that they blew a #12 overall pick on a noodle arm.

Looking at reality from an objective viewpoint is not a strong suit of the Vikings and has never happened amongst their fan base.

  31. steelerben says: May 1, 2013 1:54 PM

I’m not a Tebow defender. I don’t think he’s very good at the quarterback position, I think that he has received entirely too much credit for the Broncos playoff run, and his personal politics tend to set my teeth on edge.

    However.

The piling on at this point is getting to be a bit much. He got moved from the Broncos because they saw his developmental ceiling and it wasn’t high enough. Same thing with the Jets. The guy’s best offer to be a quarterback in pro football is as a backup on a CFL team. It seems like he’s in a bad enough situation without everyone kicking him while he’s down. Can we leave the guy with a shred of dignity left?

  32. Frazier28/7 says: May 1, 2013 3:50 PM

He’d be better for the packers, those fans will take anything crammed down their throats with a G on it.

They even think Thompson did a good job of keeping Capers after giving up 579 to San Fran. And drafting 2 RB’s when you have no blocking to keep your $22/mil a year QB upright, good plan.

  33. Frazier28/7 says: May 1, 2013 4:13 PM

Favre had nothing but good things to say about the team, Jennings said.

“He loved it. He really loved it,” Jennings said. “He loved the people. He loved the dynamic here underneath this roof. Most importantly, he just loved playing the game, being free playing the game.”
