Niners hand out front-office promotions

The 49ers have become one of the very best organizations in football.  So it’s time for the team to start handing out new titles.

The 49ers have announced the following promotions:  Joel Patton, previously the Director of College Scouting, will serve as Director of Player Personnel; Matt Malaspina, a national scout for three years, becomes the Director of College Scouting; and Mike Williams, a pro personnel scout, will be the Director of Pro Personnel.

The 49ers also promoted Justin Chabot to national scout, Steve Rubio to regional scout, and Josh Williams to pro personnel scout.

Tom Gamble, the prior Director of Player Personnel, left for a similar job with the Eagles after interviewing for some of the G.M. vacancies in January.  The 49ers otherwise have had a high level of continuity in the coaching staff and front office during their recent return to the top of the league.

Whatever they’re doing in SF is working. I hate them, but they’re fun to watch.

It helps when you deny coaches like Ed Donatell permission to talk to other teams about a new position.

@sbc85: Donatell himself has said he is OK with this. He wanted the security of a long-term coaching contract when he signed the deal. It goes both ways. He gave up the flexibility to be a “free agent” so that he would be guaranteed more money. It’s all part of the negotiation process.

Losers get Bonuses? Really? You lose the superbowl you get a bonus? Wierd.

Just putting the pieces for the next dynasty in place. We’re gonna be at the top for a while, so get used to it kids. Sixth championship win is coming up around the bend.

Hey, when is the last time a team has lost the Super Bowl and then won it the next year? Oh that’s right never. Step aside niners, Vikings are the next team of the decade! Skol!

There was no salary increase with the promotions. However, they can now inspire to corresponding positions at the levels of “Known World”, and thereafter “Universe and Beyond”. Though, once again, compensation remains the same.

I believe the word you’re looking for is “aspire”.

Watch the rest of the NFL continue to copycat the 49ers formula for success.

Seriously, can anyone tell me what these positions actually DO? This would be a good column for PFT. I have been a huge football fan for years, but I don’t know what the difference is between Director of Player Personnel and Director of Pro Personnel. Why is the Director of Player Personnel a promotion over the Director of College Scouting? Have no idea what each of these titles actually do.

As a non-49ers fan, i’d love to see them win the big one. It’d finally shut Pittsburgh up about having 6 rings.

They did better than 30 of the other 31 teams, including the holy and almighty Giants and Patriots. That deserves some recognition.

Love the moniker, BTW. He does indeed suck.

I hate the 49ers but god dam I hope they win one to shut up Steelers fans.

I think the 9ers are set up for sucess this season. They had some huge offseason additions and did very well in the draft. Look for them to be in the superbowl again next year.

Okay, you can impersonate me on the Viking and Packer stories, but it’s not cool to impersonate me on other teams’ stories. You’re ruining my brand.

How about they promote some coaches, one of them to HC, so we can stop looking at “Smiley” Harbaugh. Guy always looks totally amazed when a Niners play actually works.

    That isn’t often.

  18. rhamrhoddy says: May 1, 2013 4:50 PM

So what do you suppose the Jets front office is handing out?

  19. jayniner says: May 1, 2013 5:21 PM

Life is good for the Niners and Niner fans alike :)
