Bears scouting director leaving to join the Chiefs

The players have all but stopped changing teams this offseason, but the guys that scout and pick them are on the move.

According to Adam Caplan of, Bears director of pro scouting Chris Ballard is leaving the team to take a promotion with the Chiefs.

Ballard will oversee the pro and college scouting departments for Chiefs GM John Dorsey.

Ballard had spent his entire 12 years in the NFL with the Bears, the first 11 as an area scout on the college side.

Good riddance. If their draft history over the past 12 years (especially 1st round) is any indication of his quality of work, this is a good move for the Bears. While they’ve been able to find talents like Briggs, Melton and Wooton in later rounds, their recent early round draft history is abysmal.

    Sounds like a lateral move.

So the Chiefs are now going to start drafting a whole bunch of crappy offensive linemen?

The Bears collegs scounting has to be the worst in the NFL…does anyone remember Jaron Gilbert? Dan Buzein? Michael Okwo? Arnise Currie? Michael Hanyes? Mark Bradley? Claude Harriott? Jauquin Igelsis?

Guys, he was just in charge scouting in the Southwest area.

Yeah, he had several busts from that region, but some hits are Matt Forte, Charles Tillman, and Tommie Harris.

If his first 11 years as an area scout were local, that means he was responsible for the likes of David Terrell, Garrett Wolfe and Aramando Allen….yeah, guys a gem!
