Cyprien, Robinson already looking like keepers for the Jags

The Jaguars haven’t given fans many reasons for real hope in recent years.  Through last week’s draft, new G.M. Dave Caldwell has provided fans with at least two guys who will generate a lot of hope, immediately.

Running back/receiver Denard Robinson and safety Johnathan Cyprien have raised eyebrows in the team’s rookie minicamp.

Robinson stood out in a rainy practice session on Friday, before heading to Michigan for his college graduation.  “I know he’s a weapon from looking at all the college film. Now it’s a matter of what can he do best for us.  He will primarily play running back, but we’re looking forward to be able to move him around to a lot of other spots as well,” offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said of the converted quarterback, via Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union.

“One of our philosophies on offense is trying to get [the ball] in the playmakers’ hands,” Fisch added.  “That’s why you saw him play some multiple positions just to see what he can do, what he can take on and give him a little bit of flavor.”

Cyprien, the first pick in round two and the next pick after the Ravens selected safety Matt Elam at the bottom of round one, also commanded attention.

“That was one guy who really showed up in my eyes,” coach Gus Bradley said of Cyprien, per Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.  “I was very pleased with his start.”

Mark Long of the Associated Press remarked that Cyprien was a “man among boys” at the Friday session, intercepting a Matt Scott pass that resulted in Scott spraining an ankle as he chased him.

While it’s important to remember that these sessions consist of rookies and tryout players going against other rookies and tryout players, it’s an encouraging start for a franchise that has a long way to go to return to competitiveness.  Robinson and Cyprien could be key pieces in the effort to turn things around.

Don’t drink the Robinson kool aid just yet. Every time he took a hit at Michigan, he had to come out of the game…

Cyprien was on most guys’ top-20 list. Was a gem to fall to the 2nd. As bad off as our secondary is, I’m glad they went for a player instead of a bevy of draft picks.

    Nice drop

Cyprien looked awesome ! Reminded me of a combo of Jack Tatum old school and Troy Palomalu new school. Speed ,power and a very, very nasty attitude for putting snot bubble slobber knockers on some WRs for many many many years to come. AFC South WRs should play with some Icy Hot on hand…and some

I keep feeling like Robinson is going to end up with the Lions at the end of the season… like the jags are just keeping him at their house… but he’s like both of ours lol

What else are they going to say to the most disinterested fan-base in the country? The draft picks are boring and aren’t good? It’s all about selling tickets for them right now.

Good for the jags. They can use some hope.

Anyone will look like a keeper at Jags camp. They’re probably begging onlookers to tryout for QB…

I wanted Cyprien in the second but happy with big slab of beef the gMen ended up with – Big Hank! Nice pick by Jags.

Besides sign Tebow …run the hell out of the ball and play stout defense…. It wont get many highlights but at least they’d win and possibly contend for a playoff spot…..Please don’t let Gabbert and Henne ruin what could be a descent team ….

Until they get a QB, they are going nowhere, fast.

Ridiculous that these kids are expected to practice without a contract

Denard always looks great against weak competition. But the moment he’s in there against good talent he struggles. I wouldn’t expect too much jags fans.

Packers missed out big time on Cyprien, he’s gonna be good

  15. slayisland says: May 5, 2013 11:20 AM

They can’t get any worst so anything new is a keeper

Geno Smith wishes he had Cyprien’s agent.

Lol they’re in shorts and helmets playing against mostly undrafted free agents and people trying out for the team. Please let’s let them play in a preseason game first before we putting them in the probowl.
