49ers sign 12 undrafted free agents

MarQueis Gray, Jackson Richards AP

We found out the name of the most intriguing member of the 49ers’ crop of undrafted free agent signings shortly after the draft when British discus thrower and football neophyte Lawrence Okoye announced that he’d signed with San Francisco.

Okoye may be the biggest name (and among the biggest players) added to the roster, but he isn’t the only one. The 49ers announced their full list of undrafted rookie additions on Tuesday, a list that included a player making a position switch from college.

MarQueis Gray played wide receiver and quarterback at Minnesota, but will join fellow Big Ten product Denard Robinson (drafted by the Jaguars in the fifth round) in making a move to running back at the professional level. Gray ran plenty in college, gaining 1,731 yards with the Golden Gophers, but he’ll have to master his new role in order to continue his playing career with the defending NFC champs.

The other 10 players signed by the 49ers are: Tennessee State center Sherman Carter; Stanford fullback Alex Debniak; Boise State running back D.J. Harper; Utah State wide receiver Chuck Jacobs; Azusa Pacific tackle Luke Marquardt; UCLA long snapper Kevin McDermott; Texas State cornerback Darryl Morris; Michigan guard Patrick Omameh; Wyoming defensive tackle Mike Purcell and Tulsa cornerback Lowell Rose.

Gray is about 6’4″ and 255 lbs. He was a good running QB but I’m surprised they’re trying to make him a running back. I think most people were thinking he would switch to tight end. He’s a great athlete, but I don’t see him beating out guys who actually played running back in college.

hmmm…the Robinson link shows that he was drafted by the Jags…

ripster: The reference wasn’t about Robinson being a 49er…it was a reference to him making the conversion to RB.

As a Gophers fan myself, I’m happy for Marqueis. He was horribly handled at the collegiate level, as he never consistently was put at one position. The best thing would have been for him to be a WR full-time the entire 4 years; however, he split time at both QB and WR, and that was a detriment to his development. I wish MarQueis good luck, because he’s one of the good guys.

They may or may not be talented, but this group of free agents certainly aren’t the the sharpest tools…if you have your choice of places to land as an UDFA, why would you cast your lot with the talent-laden San Francisco 49ers?

If they even make the playoffs this year (and that’s a BIG if), the 49ers will be one and done. Their fans crawled out of the woodwork last year and they’ll be crawling back in halfway through this season. Biggest bunch of fairweather/bandwagon fans I’ve ever met.

Same stuff we heard before last season 2011 was a fluke and we would go 6-10 at best. As for bandwagon fans their everywhere but the true fans remember 8 years of 49ers teams that were just terrible i caught at least one game at the stick through 2002 and 2010 and would never doubt my faith to my niners so go screw yourself!

So, little Montana didn’t make the cut. That’s to bad, really though they’d make room for him, being the son of a franchise god.

I was hoping we would draft D Robinson. I thought he would be a good back up for Kap. I have faith in Harbalkee tho!! 49er Faithful

Don’t sleep on this kid Morris from Texas state … he’s a baller and has all the skills to be a good slot corner, just needs some good coaching… check out some of his highlights on YouTube he makes some pretty ridiculous plays out there… and he runs a 4.30 forty

Bordner go concern yourself with more important issues to you like why you feel the need to troll. Are you the victim of a lees than ideal upbringing? I’m guessing yes. Been a fan since 81 after they beat Dallas 45-14

Border, I know it’s tuff to see the niners come back to relevance but sorry to say we aren’t going anywhere but up. Niners got the best GM and a top 3 coach in the league. Long as those pieces are in place with a talented roster then we will be decorating them fingers and trophy cases.

  17. sfniners4life says: May 8, 2013 12:25 PM

Border, I understand how bandwagon fans are wicked annoying. I’ve been lucky to see one or 2 niners fans at the bar on Sunday watching the game. It’s even tougher being a niner fan on the east coast cause Sunday ticket is a must and tried going to bars to watch for a year only to be in the back corner watching niners on only tv they on but to assume everyone is a bandwagon fan just shows how much a idiot u are. Niners are one of the most glorious franchise in the nfl like the packers, steelers, and cowboys. Sry we never going have to leave town or pull publicly stunt to get fans out like whatever team u pull for. Let me guess ur a browns, jags, or jets fan. Lol
