Jaguars owner Shahid Khan realizes that folks in Jacksonville are clamoring for the team to sign Tim Tebow.
“We’re looking for the best players obviously for us that help us win,” Khan said Tuesday at the NFL’s Career Development Symposium in Philadelphia, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “How many players are in the NFL? I would assume it’s 90 [times] 32 at this point, right? So, ballpark about 3,000 players, correct? Why one player? . . . . Why do you ask about one player? What about the other 2,999?
“Because I’m fascinated with that.”
He shouldn’t be. Tebow comes from Jacksonville. He became one of the greatest college football players ever in nearby Gainesville. And, last year, Khan himself was fascinated with the potential revenue to be derived from having Tebow on the team. Only after Khan handed the keys to G.M. Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley did Khan exit the Tim Tebow business.
“I don’t think it’s right for me to go and say – forget about a specific player – which of the 3000 players in the league they ought to have and not have,” Khan added. “So it’s for them [to decide].”
With Khan also pointing out that it’s important to hire competent football people and “hold them accountable,” the message is clear: Sign who you want (or don’t want), but if you don’t win, I’ll eventually make a change.
Along the way, Khan could make plenty of money with Tebow on the team. Khan is banking instead on a winning program generating even more of it.
