NBC chooses Carrie Underwood to sing Sunday Night Football theme

A singer who came to prominence on a show that used to dominate the ratings is now joining the top-rated program on primetime television.

Carrie Underwood is the new performer of the opening theme to Sunday Night Football, NBC announced Tuesday. She will first perform in her new role on Sept. 8, when the Giants and Cowboys play in Dallas in the first SNF broadcast of 2013.

“I am thrilled to be a part of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me,” Underwood said in a statement released by NBC. “I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!”

Underwood, a six-time Grammy Award winner who won “American Idol” in 2005, replaces the departing Faith Hill, who sang “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” from 2007 through 2012.

An announcement for this?? All the song does it delay the start of the game. The opening song is about as important as NFL cheerleaders or the NBA.

This proves the NFL is going the way of the NBA. More entertainment. Less sports.

Just bring back Hank. It is so messed up in our culture that someone like Kluwe can publish obscenity fueled hatred towards individuals and we applaud him but then if Hank questions the actions of a politician we have to fire him.

Crazy double standard in this country. You have the freedom of speech, but if you exercise that freedom in a way that is counter to the status quo of the progressive liberals running mainstream media then you are removed from working in mainstream media.

Yay America. Obviously it is working though because everyone can agree things are really getting better under the current leadership. Ostricizing folks like Hank for a controversial view that has nothing to do with the job he was hired to do, and was doing well, is sure bringing us together as a people and culture. It is especially nice knowing that when people were making basically the same exact accusations towards Bush during his presidency they were basically applauded for it.

At some point people need to wake up to what is being done.

  36. gbearc says: May 7, 2013 5:07 PM

Major upgrade. Faith Hill was awful. Awful music, not a real country artist. Her biggest hit was a horrible bubblegum pop song, not even country. Carrie is infinitely more talented and has much better music. Also, the last public appearance Faith made, her face look really weird. Too much botox, I assume. Barely recognizable.

  60. Stiller43 says: May 7, 2013 5:31 PM

    Theytukrjobs,

He was on MNF, not SNF.

And he didnt get in any legal trouble for what he said (that freedom of speech thing you mentioned at work), but any organization can choose to have who they want representing them. The NFL (or ESPN, or both) said, “wow, he just made a whole lot of people mad and he represents us, so therefore we can/will draw criticism for having him continue to represent us.”

Boom, gone. It makes perfect sense…and he still has all the freedom of speech anyone else has.

  78. normaneinstein7 says: May 7, 2013 6:03 PM

They should’ve hired the singer from Culture Club. She was hot.

  79. jimmylions says: May 7, 2013 6:03 PM

Actually … they should have brought in Motörhead to do the SNF them to the tune of Ace of Spades. That would get the pregame adrenalin pumping!

  80. mazblast says: May 7, 2013 6:06 PM

I certainly don’t mind looking at Hill or Underwood, but that doesn’t mean I want to hear them sing.

I keep the sound down when I watch SNF anyway, because I can’t stand Christine Collinsworth, both his voice and the BS he spouts. What would he know about throwing a block or a WR going over the middle? He never did either in his tenure with the Bagels.

  81. blacknole08 says: May 7, 2013 6:13 PM

Why do we even need a singer before a Sunday Night Game?

I honestly look forward to hearing that NBC theme music played before the game (better than FOX and CBS) over some country singer lip-synching over some record.

Whoever orchestrated that theme is genius!

  82. sanityinsd says: May 7, 2013 6:19 PM

  94. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: May 7, 2013 7:10 PM

Good choice. I think the singer for shows should be changed more frequently to keep it interesting. Hank Jr. sang MNF like forever.

Since it’s SNF is on NBC, maybe have the winner of “The Voice” sing it every season. Continue the trend to shamelessly promote other shows during shows.
