The Patriots successfully claimed rookie running back Akeem Shavers on waivers from Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The move was disclosed in the NFL’s daily transactions and also announced by New England.

In his senior season at Purdue in 2012, the 23-year-old Shavers rushed for 871 yards and six touchdowns on 181 carries. The Buccaneers waived him Monday after agreeing to terms with him a week earlier.

Shavers (5-11, 203) joins six other running backs on the Patriots’ roster, with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, LeGarrette Blount, Leon Washington and James Develin the other players at the position.

In another roster move disclosed in the NFL’s Tuesday transactions, the Patriots added undrafted rookie running Quentin Hines to injured reserve after he was waived-injured Monday.
