It’s Lions Mt. Rushmore nomination time

Barry Getty Images

Plenty of you have chimed in regarding potential finalists for the Vikings Mt. Rushmore collection.

We’ll now stay in the same division and accept nominations for the Detroit Lions.

(Let’s try to suggest players other than receivers, Mr. Millen.)

You can suggest whomever you want below.  And others possibly will ridicule you for it.

Who cares? They haven’t even won a Super Bowl. Their greatest team achievement in the Super Bowl Era is that they are the only team in NFL history to go 0-16. Because of that, Matt Millen should be on Mount Suckmore.

Barry Sanders had some of the most beautiful two yard loss runs in the history of the NFL.

Can you imagine if he played for the Dolphins? Dan Marino with Barry Sanders. Or in Minnesota with Warren Moon and Chris Carter?

Barry Sanders is 1B to Jim Brown 1A as the greatest running back of all time. (Walter Payton is 1A- or B+)Either way anyone can make an argument that Barry was one of the greatest of all time.

  60. musicman495 says: May 11, 2013 11:46 PM

I was born the year AFTER they last won a championship, and they broke my heart every year of the 60s and 70s until I checked myself into the Betty Ford Clinic to kick the habit. Nevertheless, I know my Lions. These four are also patron saints of lost causes, since they were often tremendous players on bad teams:

    Barry Sanders – HOF
    Charlie Sanders – HOF
Joe Schmidt – HOF (and an historically important coach, too)
Alex Karras (my favorite player growing up, but as an adult, I realize Jerry Kramer was right – he underachieved)

I have no problem if any of the following made it:

Lem Barney (#2o before Billy Sims )
Billy Sims (#2o before Barry Sanders)
    Bobby Layne
    Night Train Lane
Roger Brown, Sam Williams or Darris McCord (who along with Karras made up the ORIGINAL Fearsome Foursome – never mind these Ram imposters)
    Yale Lary
    Dick Lebeau
    Doak Walker
    Herman Moore

  61. grudenfan says: May 11, 2013 11:46 PM

Barry Sanders – needs no intro

Joe Schmidt – HOF, NFLN top 100 all-time, all-decade in the 50s, career Lion

Lem Barney – HOF, 7x All-Pro, career Lion

Bobby Layne – 3x champ, HOF, best QB in team history

  62. grudenfan says: May 11, 2013 11:47 PM

After those four, you could make arguments for:

Night Train Lane – only played six years, but was great for several of them

Charlie Sanders – HOF career Lion and All-Decade in the 70s

Dick LeBeau – Basically the DB version of Charlie Sanders

Calvin Johnson – Because the last 40 years of Lion football has sucked and you might want another great player people under 50 have seen play.

  72. RoofDude says: May 12, 2013 12:24 AM

Barry Sanders …without a doubt. He is STILL the first guy you think of when you hear the name, Detroit Lions &, it’s been how many years since he played..??

I can understand the youngsters wanting to suggest Calvin, & Suh but, don’t ya think it’s a little premature for them..?

I would vote for Night Train, Moore, & LeBeau to go with Barry. However, one giant Barry taking up all four spots would seem fitting too. He was the reason they didn’t go 0-16 earlier…

I think those are the strongest nominees for this, with the stats and legendary reputations that Mt. Rushmore should be about.
Calvin is too recent, and I don’t want to jinx a current player by putting him on our Mt. Rushmore.
As for Jason Hanson, do we really want a kicker up there? We would be the ONLY team to put a kicker on their Mt. Rushmore. It will be way too embarrassing. Please, don’t do this!

You just can’t have Bobby Lane in there. They guy put a 50 year curse on the Lions when they traded him and the damn thing worked a treat.

    BARRY SANDERS and nobody else.

Calvin Johnson is great but he hasn’t been around long enough or made the lions relevant enough to warrant Mt. Rushmore type honors.

For what Barry had to put up with there, he gets to take that spot all alone. Just like when he was playing!

  116. matt2calvin says: May 12, 2013 9:26 AM

    In the proper order…

    1) Barry Sanders, complete with his halo.
    2) Joe Schmidt, if he isn’t on your list – you shouldn’t have a vote.
    3) Calvin Johnson, has done enough with best year of any wr in the HISTORY of the NFL (with much more to come).

Those three are locks, the next pick is debatable.

    4) Lem Barney – all pro seven seasons.

I wanted to find a way to justify these players, but couldn’t…

Billy Sims – career was too short
Jason Hansen – reliable, NFL’s career leader (but the dude’s a kicker, so: no)
Charlie Sanders – was way ahead of this time.
Night Train Lane – didn’t play long enough.

Matthew Stafford has a chance one day… …but not even in the debate at this point.

Such a pathetic franchise, but still some great players…

Barry Sanders (should be on the allo-NFL Mt. Rushmore…for those who didn’t see him play, yes, he was THAT great)

    Calvin Johnson

    Bobby Layne

Jason Hansen (admit it, he’s good)

Unfortunately, the Lions’ Mt. Rushmore of SUCK would have WAAAAY more options.

Millen, Marinelli (0-16, duh!) Harrington, Rogers, Young, Ware, Peete, Mitchell… Man, it’s depressing.

As for the GOOD Mt. Rushmore…

Sanders, Bobby Layne, Night Train, and Jason Hanson.
