Matt Barkley: I’ll make myself a fit in Chip Kelly’s offense

AP

After his first day on the practice field at rookie minicamp, Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley heard the question he’s been hearing since he was drafted: Is he a fit in Chip Kelly’s offense?

Barkley said that whether Kelly runs an offense like he ran at Oregon, or whether Kelly changes his schemes in the NFL, Barkley will find a way to make it work.

You know, I’ll make it fit,” Barkley said, via CSNPhilly.com. “It doesn’t matter what plays we run, I’m going to find a way to help this team out, and I know Coach Kelly has a way of working things out as well in terms of how he schemes and how he calls plays, so I’m not worried. I’m just worried about the here and now and what I can do right now.”

Although Barkley is third on the depth chart behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles, he said he expects to compete to start in Week One.

“I’ll get to know those guys, and I’m sure from what I’ve heard they are outstanding men, but you come in knowing that you have a job and they’re trying to take that job as well, so it’s competition, you know. Competing is what it’s all about,” Barkley said.

And Barkley believes he can compete in any offense.

  1. I think this falls under, “what did you expect him to say?”.

He has no real shot to start week 1. Unfortunately, neither does Foles it looks like. Foles would be the best QB on this roster to start week 1 but yet another coach think’s he’s the one who can change Mike Vick.

  2. Sorry Barkley you wouldn’t cut it on the great Lions squad, you make our backup Shaun Hill look like Joe Montana

    #Lions Superbowl #16-0 #greatness

  3. You guys are such idiots he has all the makings of a career QB if you knew anything about football you would know that .

  4. I think he’ll be a starter by next year. How well he will perform is a giant question mark, but this guy, with the right pieces gave luck a run for his money, and showed he’s got that toughness and leadership quality you look for in a qb. As a fourth rounder you can’t complain. If he sucks he’s not exactly a bust. He’s a fourth round pick. As a descent backup you won.

  5. Looking at the picture an arms length away, it looks like he is holding a baby! Lol

  6. Barkley is gonna be great!…….. at making sure the bench doesn’t try to get up and go anywhere

  7. “So long as my WR’s aren’t being defended within 10-15 yards like my USC days, I’ll be great here.”

  8. Yes he’ll fit until he doesn’t then he’ll throw the coach and offensive coordinator under the bus and say their playcalling was the problem.

  9. I love his confidence. When you hear him talk, he says all the right things and you can tell this isn’t just talk. I’ve never been as impressed hearing a rookie QB talk as I am when Barkley speaks. It just seems so… authentic.

  10. This kid started as a 14 year old freshman at football powerhouse Mater Dei High School. Started as a true freshman at USC which is basically unheard of. It would not shock me if he is starting opening day for the Eagles. He is ultra smart, a natural leader, and can make every NFL throw. The only thing he has to show me is he can take an NFL man sized hit without being effected.

  11. I think Barkley can be a good, productive starting QB in the NFL. In Philly? Remains to be seen.
Kelly seems to be collecting QB’s with disparate styles of play, leading you to wonder if he really has a plan about the type of offense he wants to run…?

  12. I am just an old Eagles fan but, I have a good feeling about this kid. I say he breaks the USC jinx. Look at his stats from last year. That was supposed to be a bad year. Remember he will have time to learn.

  13. He’s clearly the quarterback of the future-they drafted him for a reason. Clearly, Vick is not the QB of the furture, and neither is Foles. He is 2 years out from leading this team.

  14. Use Vick for there Chip Kelly offense, but then also have packages for Barkley/Foles for a more West coast offense. I think Kelly might have that in mind.

  15. I agree that Barkley will probably start for the Eagles at some point this year, but if he does, it means that the team is losing or Vick is injured or both. Where Foles fits into Kelly’s plans is unknown at this point (probably even to Kelly), but one thing that is certain is that they didn’t draft Barkley to be a career backup to either Vick or Foles.

  16. I love rooting against USC as much as anyone, but this whole USC jinx thing is BS. First off Carson Palmer was a pretty good QB in his prime. If not for the fact that as good as the bengals offense was the defense was way worse he would be highly regarded. His only major flaw is he always plays on horrible teams. Second it’s not exactly like all these other schools are producing consistent QB talent prospects ever year. Hundreds are college QBs go undrafted ever year. Good QBs are hard to come by. I ain’t saying Barkley is destiny for greatness, but just saying it’s hard no matter who you are or where you went to school.

  17. i love how eagle fans talk so much trash..YOU Still have NO Superbowls…Skin fan here…you still have a soft offensive line….yall are never going to win anything..call it the eagle Jinx…the bottom of the NFC EAST the Brotherly Love City of Philly….why dont you just ask Mcnabb no Mcnaw to be under center again..

  18. Last year they all said Russell Wilson had no chance to start, he was competing to carry a clipboard. Look how that worked out. Good luck Matt. Work your butt off and force them to start you.

  19. Somebody needs to remind this kid that he’s not in sunny La La land anymore…

Philly fans have no mercy on their teams players talking a big game then falling short.

  20. most people on this board have no idea how good he is. They did not see the games against Oregon and Stanford that should have been blowouts if not for Matt fighting so hard to keep them in those games. The USC Defense was horrible and blew it for him every time.

  21. I love how Redskins fans pretend like they have been relevant over the past 20 years. They get Peters back, who 2 years ago was arguably the best offensive lineman in football, Kelce and Herrimans will be back from injury and Mathis played well over the past 2 years. Not sure how Lane Johnson will fit, but I imagine he will be an upgrade over King Dunlap and Demetrus Bell. I have no idea how good Barkley will be, I imagine based off of their draft this year that they are going to run more off a Patriots style up tempo offense where the QB needs to be smart and get the ball out quickly in order to let playmakers make plays down the field. I don’t think anyone honestly knows how it will look, but we’ll see. Barkley may never end up beating out Foles and he could win the job. Let’s see how they perform in the preseason with pads and live contact.

  22. You know you can talk, i mean you can say what you want when you want it before..but this team has won zilch….they dont even deserve a locker room for what i know..You call that a team oh Dream Team….even vick quit….soft…atleast rg3 never quit…You have no accolades….and relevant? at this point WE Are the NFC EAST CHAMPIONS you better hope RG3 doesnt regain full health or you guys will be the doormats of the NFC EAST for years…Why do you have a Trophy Case in your Stadium? YOU have no Lombardi’s…oh and who was Lombardi? a Redskins Coach…Ah Legacies…..

  23. For the record I am not an Eagles fan per say, but I am an Oregon and Chip Kelly fan. Like a few posters pointed out most of the board has no idea what Chip Kelly is about and many of the same people bashing Barkley (if nothing else a great kid) haven’t seen him play in big games.

  24. Ya but we have 5 NFC championships and when was the last time the skins were even in the Super Bowl ???? You had one lucky year now your RG3 is damaged goods good luck with that skins fans

  25. Robert Griffin III may never be the same player again after that injury. I get why Shannahan tried to milk a win out of them because the Redskins were trying to win and they haven’t done a thing since before Clinton was taking down interns in the oval office. The Pirates used to be a great baseball team in the past, but sports is a what have you done for me lately business. I actually hope Griffin comes back because he’s fun to watch, but perhaps win a playoff game and then thump your chest, because the Redskins recent past is one of utter failure.

  26. I guess i missed an earlier post, but did I miss Chip Kelly saying he was going to CHANGE Mike Vick, or that he would adapt to the players he has?

I don’t consider 2012 Vick’s fault. so all those fumbles, and interceptions… not his fault. maybe 1 or 2. but look at 2010 is you wanna see what he really can do. No One could play behind that O line we had last year. No One.

I’ll give him this year, we were within 3 points of the beating the Packers in the playoffs.. and guess who won the SB in 2010?? I seem to remember the 2004 SB Eagles losing by 3 pts as well… yet no one condemned McNabb that yr.. though.. from 2008-2010 he definitely went down hill.

Guy might not even make the team.

    Career backup at best.

And yet you would be a hootin and a hollerin in the trailer park if the Packers were to sign Barkley and waive Graham Harrell. I wouldn’t throw rocks from your glass house.

I like your spirit, 16-0 for the Lions? A 4 game flash wonder for a draft pick, one decent player on offense, and defensive sieve? I would just be happy with a draft pick below 6 next year.

  29. USC. Fourth round. Team coming off a bad year, with a new, NFL rookie coach.

Why are we even bothering to spend time on this guy?

  30. I think Barkley will be a great QB. And I hope Kelly doesn’t emerse the Eagle fans with the read option junk, making him sit. I would love to see the team get back into pocket passing. He and Foles will be 1-2 next year, or when Vick gets hurt.

Ohhhhhhh OK, you wanna go THERE???? I guess Emmitt Smith is an Arizona Cardinal, Joe Montana is a Kansas City Chief, and Jerry Rice is an Oakland Raider, right? Lombardi was a Redskins coach FOR ONE YEAR!!! That organization and city were so pathetic that you forced him into retirement!!! He said forget it!! I’m outta here, one year with this team and I can’t take it, I quit!! THATS what you did to Vince Lombardi. You ran him out of the NFL. The BEST he could do with that joke of a team in DC was go 7-5-2. 7 wins in a 14 game season, yeah that LEGENDARY! You wanna know what IS legendary?? What Lombardi did to your beloved Redskins in the ONE season he was there…he completely changed the teams uniform to mirror the Packers!!! Hahahahahahahaha!!!! He changed the team’s uniform design to reflect that of the Packers, with gold and white trim along the jersey biceps, and a gold helmet with an “R” inside a circle, similar to the famous Green Bay “G” monogram. He thought your teams uniforms were so bad he made them EXACT replicas of the Packers’!!!! Way to be original!!! hahahaha!! Here’s a little knowledge for you…Lombardi only lost ONE championship game his entire career. Do you know who it was to??? That’s right, the Philadelphia M#$%&r F#*%in Eagles baby!!! The EAGLES beat Lombardi to win the 1960 NFL Championship and if you don’t believe me, just take a look at our so-called “empty” trophy case. It sitting next to two others.

  32. So we already know Chip doesn’t know what defense he will line up in and he doesn’t want to talk about it.

Now we have Barkley the QB they traded up to pick (that no one else wanted) saying he will make himself fit into whatever offense Chip decides to run. Really? He hasn’t nailed that down yet?

Hate on other teams all you want Eagles, that’s what you do, but it doesn’t change the fact that Philly is in a fustercluck with this Chip guy.

    Let the attacks begin.
