Lions rookie Larry Warford okay after neck injury

There usually isn’t much meaningful news made at rookie minicamps.

There are plenty of profiles of new members of every team and glowing reports from coaches about how a high draft pick did in his first couple of days, but very little of it winds up mattering once rookies meet veterans. The one major exeception is injuries, which can happen during the lightest of workouts and linger well into the more significant parts of the season.

Lions guard Larry Warford appears to have avoided such an injury. He injured his neck during Saturday’s practice and was mostly an observer at Sunday’s workout, but coach Jim Schwartz said the third-round pick should be good to get back to work once the team starts their organized team activities on May 21.

“He could have gone through everything today. But we just limited him to just individual today,” Schwartz said, via Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press. “We didn’t want him going through any of the half-line stuff or the team stuff or anything like that. So we made the decision on him just to err on the side of caution.”

With Warford ticketed for right guard in Detroit and there aren’t any other strong options for the job, it’s good news for the Lions that Warford’s injury barely amounted to news at all.

Somebody accidentally hit him in the neck with their elbow. Big news, for sure. I guess the “fans” can come on here now and call him a wasted pick.

He will be fine while trying to win a starting job.
