Patriots cut Brandon Deaderick

In a surprising roster move on Monday afternoon, the Patriots have released defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick.

The 25-year-old Deaderick, who joined the Patriots as a 2010 seventh-round draft pick, played in 14 games and started five for New England last season.

There’s no word on what led the Patriots to decide to release Deaderick, but the move was not expected. Deaderick is young and has been relatively productive, and his contract makes him an inexpensive member of the roster. Guys like that usually don’t get cut in May.

The Patriots also confirmed that they have signed veteran free agent offensive lineman Tyronne Green and rookie free agent R.J. Mattes, and that they have released receiver Andre Holmes.

Raiders, Jaguars, Chiefs, etc bad team could use him

I doubt that he’ll stay unemployed for long. If the Pats were to say that there was some non-football problem, and you were an exec for another organization, would you believe them?

Strange decision considering he beat out Kyle Love for a starting job late last season. Must be something going on behind the scenes.

Decent run defender, but doesn’t offer much as a pass rusher. He would make a good backup or rotational player on a DL-needy team.

Very tough guy, he played in a college game a few days after getting shot.

I bet BB liked what he saw out of Armstead and/or one of the UDFA DTs and decided Deaderick was expendable.

    That picture is cold.

  6. robertocfg says: May 13, 2013 5:22 PM

Wow, didn’t expect that. He provided solid depth at the line. Much more production than his 7th round contract supposed.

Maybe one of the new acquisitions (Buchanan, Vega, Armstead) is impressing the coaches already and they released Deaderick to make it easier for him to land in another team?

The two players who were exposed during last season as not NFL material on the D-line are gone. Ron Brace and Brandon Deadrick failed when Vince Wilfork was off the field.

  8. ampats says: May 13, 2013 5:27 PM

He was suspended by the team a couple of yers ago. I didn’t see him on the final 53 but didn’t think he would be cut in May.

He must have reported in poor shape or did something that BB showed him the door. He was in the last year of his contract.

  9. harrisonhits2 says: May 13, 2013 5:27 PM

Wow that’s a big surprise. He’s been a bit player but he mostly played well in the situations they put him in.

  10. eventhorizon04 says: May 13, 2013 5:28 PM

Surprising. He didn’t play particularly well last year, but he was serviceable, and he’s only 25.

Also, as a former 7th round pick still on his rookie deal, his salary was very cheap regardless of whether he’s a starter or backup this upcoming season ($600k).

And even if the Patriots were convinced other guys on the roster deserved Deadrick’s snaps, you’d think they would have waited until a training camp battle took place before cutting him.

Anyways, I think there’s a good chance gets claimed off waivers. A lot of teams could use decent DT depth at a cheap price.

I’d like the Raiders to pick him up

  12. vincentbojackson says: May 13, 2013 5:34 PM

Belichick had no use for a player that can’t play tight end.

  13. Obama's Ballsack says: May 13, 2013 5:35 PM

That pic made me feel for the guy.

  14. vincentbojackson says: May 13, 2013 5:35 PM

Somebody had to go to free up a spot for Tebow.

  15. tedmurph says: May 13, 2013 5:44 PM

I’m a little suprised too, since he was servicable, but don’t forget, they signed Tommie Kelly too. TK, Vince, Love and Armstead are all ahead of him. They like Forston too, who may have more upside. At this point, Deaderick is what he is. Could probably help someone though, as could BHoyer.

Nice kid, but they have added better talent through free agency. This seasons line will be the best in sometime. Adding Kelly allows Wilfork to be moved around the line and they have great athletic depth behind them. The need for run stoppers isn’t as needed (they have 3 run stuffing linebackers) as the need for pass rushers, and they appear to have added quality depth this year. He’s a good middle of the pack player that I’m sure will catch on somewhere.

Maybe he forgot to genuflect when he saw Belichek

  18. bigpap says: May 13, 2013 6:01 PM

shocking to say the least. didn’t expect this to happen. there has to be a story here, seeing as how BB didn’t even keep him around to be camp fodder.

he was suspended by the Pats at the end of his rookie season. wonder if it has something to do with that.

  19. benh999 says: May 13, 2013 6:06 PM

Probably did him a favor cutting him sooner than later.

  20. descendency says: May 13, 2013 6:32 PM

He’s a good player that was in for a hard fight for his roster spot. It’s better to be cut now and get picked up to start a training camp than to be cut in training camp and have a hard time finding a job (until someone is hurt).

Maybe he was cut because he did something bad or maybe he asked to be released. It’s silly to speculate.

He was a rotational guy who started a few games; He will probably catch on somewhere else, at least in a similar role.

Personally, I thought he was overrated in the run game and not good in the passing game. He was a good pick for a 7th rounder, but this team doesn’t have room for those kinds of guys.

Some players don’t realize that they cannot get away with things like slacking off in workouts…in NE…and still have a job.

Love the side of Belichick that he’s all business and sees players for what they will be…not what they have been.

That’s why many people actually think Amendola will be more productive than Welker…Of course not having a QB that sets him up to get murdered a good start too.

  22. patsfiend says: May 13, 2013 6:59 PM

Walking out with his locker in a trash bag. Harsh. You’d think they’d issue an NFL duffel bag or something. Though I guess they’d go through a lot of them.

This is a sign of better D-line depth. Team is looking deeper. Good luck out there, BD.

hes got pics of bill billicheat at a tranny bar, thats why he was cut

  24. surfinbird1 says: May 13, 2013 7:13 PM

They know something we don’t know.

  25. bigbosscrispy says: May 13, 2013 8:35 PM

Jerry Reese is foaming at the mouth

  26. travishise says: May 13, 2013 9:28 PM

Surprising, but he was a rotational DT used mostly as a pass rusher but he didn’t really do as well there as expected. He’s more of a 3-4 DE than a 4-3 DT so the fit wasn’t really there anyways. I suppose this means Armstead looks pretty good (which he should look decent after dominating at USC and CFL). I’m going to chalk this up to a class move by Belichick giving him enough time to find a team before training camp starts and he gets cut anyways. And for those concerned about the picture, that’s not really a picture of him cleaning out his locker after getting cut. That’s a picture from the Monday after the AFCCG when the players clean out their lockers.

Wow. What a great move that Bill Belichek made here. I’ve never been more proud to be a Patriots fan than I am right now!

  28. mempusa says: May 13, 2013 9:48 PM

    Someone did something wrong!

  29. tsizzlesucks says: May 14, 2013 11:31 AM

Let’s not get carried away. He was a body…nothing more, nothing less. What’s cruel is that he had to provide his own trash bg!

  30. rushmatic says: May 14, 2013 11:45 AM

A few years back, when Deaderick was still rocking a flat-top, it was leaked that he had to be disciplined a couple times for being late to meetings, etc.

The behind-the-scenes problems, if that’s the underlying reason, have been going on for a while now apparently.

  31. rushmatic says: May 14, 2013 11:46 AM

Also, two names come to mind: Armond Armstead and Tommy Kelly.

  32. patriotenvy says: May 14, 2013 1:56 PM

He’ll get signed, but I bet he is bummed to be leaving like this.
