Leslie Frazier confirms no Brian Urlacher for Vikes “at this point”

2011 NFC Championship: Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears Getty Images

Tuesday brought a report indicating Vikings interest in free agent linebacker Brian Urlacher as well as a report that the team was not currently interested in Urlacher because they wanted to look at the players they already have on the roster.

According to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, the latter report is on the nose. Frazier appeared on the NFL Network Wednesday and confirmed that the Vikings were content to explore the players they have on the team. He stopped short of ruling out Urlacher should the team decide the in-house options aren’t to their satisfaction.

“Brian has been a great player in our league for a long, long time,” Frazier said. “He was a thorn in our side for many years. At this point we want to look at the guys on our roster, give them a chance to compete for the middle linebacker position then we’ll see where it takes us.”

Erin Henderson is going to be the first man with a shot to convince the Vikes that they have no need to add the longtime Bear to the team, with Audie Cole and rookie Michael Mauti also possibilities in Minnesota. The Broncos have also been mentioned as a potential suitor for Urlacher, but Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the team isn’t interested in the soon-to-be 35-year-old either.

Why isn’t Jerry Jones calling? Or Andy Reid for that matter

Cue more parrots talking about the Vikings “retirement home” in 5..4..3..2..1…

But seriously, this is a good thing – I want to see what these guys can do and give them a chance to step up. Henderson has the talent, just needs to get it together, Cole has shown flashes of brilliance (though I will admit those 2 pick-6′s during preseason last year were hand-wrapped for the guy) and if Mauti can stay healthy he will be an absolute force.

I don’t think this situation is as dire as a lot of Vikings fans are making it out to be. Besides, our DL alone is going to wreck havoc without a super linebacker corps.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this position. Everyone has been talking about how desperate they are for a linebacker but they didn’t spend a high draft pick on one and they haven’t brought in a free agent. Is it possible the head coach and general manager know more about this than we do?

  6. tokyosandblaster says: May 15, 2013 10:58 AM

Some Vikes clown said they have the best Defense in the north… I had to laugh.

Jared Allen is on the decline, Greenway and Williams are getting older, and you just drafted a t-rex to play defensive line.

The Packers and Bears had better defenses last year, and both made significant improvements, so I guess I don’t know where the “best defense in the north” is coming from.

    Madden isn’t real life, kids.

  7. granadafan says: May 15, 2013 11:00 AM

I’m surprised the NFC North teams didn’t snap him up. He would have extra motivation when they play the Bears two times.

  8. filthymcnasty1 says: May 15, 2013 11:05 AM

Leslie Frazier and Rick Speilman were 2/3rds of the Bermuda Triangle of Authority which gave birth to 3-13.

So I have a very high degree of confidence that they’ll once again do the wrong thing.

  9. inyofaceagain says: May 15, 2013 11:06 AM

Kevin Williams is the oldest Viking at 32. The Packers have a MUCH older team. That being said, if Urlacher can be got for like a mill it might be worth it. He’s slower than ever and wont play many downs. Prolly not worth it.

  10. jojopuppyfish says: May 15, 2013 11:12 AM

It breaks my heart that Urlacher might not play in the NFL this year (No sarcasm in my post)

  11. larry1957 says: May 15, 2013 11:48 AM

I still think the Bears screwed him. The Bears should have signed the guy for 2 years. Maybe have him join the coaching ranks in the second year. With the new coach in town, I’ll bet he tries to get rid of Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs, et al.

  12. ditkabutkus says: May 15, 2013 12:05 PM

Brian just needs to call it a day and retire with dignity.

If he gets a shot somewhere, it’s probably for less than the $2 mill the Bears offered, which he called “a slap in the face”.

  13. vikesfanforlife says: May 15, 2013 12:06 PM

Jared Allen on the decline? what makes you say that? he had 22 sacks in 2011, and had 12 in 2012 playing with a torn up shoulder the entire season. watch some football and you may actually know something. that being said, Kevin Williams is for sure on the decline and is most likely playing his last season in purple. As for Sharrif Floyd having short arms, so what. Film doesn’t lie and he is an absolute beast on film against SEC competition. He is fast and stout at the point of attack and many talent evaluators had him rated as a top 5 pick. Do the Vikes have the best defense in the NFC North? no clue, they haven’t played a snap in 2013. tokyosandblaster just blabs to rile up the Vikings fan base. he actually knows very little about football

  14. chi01town says: May 15, 2013 12:29 PM

Urlacher blew his chance to be a Chicago Bear. nobody else.. not his agent or the team. now he cant find a job because he dont have the skills left in him. Chicago dont owe him nothing. he got RICH playing here and he will be a HOF player in 5 years. Im glad hes gone so the team can get younger

  15. tokyosandblaster says: May 15, 2013 12:29 PM

I know that the projected starters for the Packers average age is 25? And for the Vikes, it’s 27.

I also know that the Packers offense and defense were better than the Vikings last year, and so when a Vikings fan says that the Vikings are the best, they’re just doing what they do best: living in a fantasy world, where the Vikings have won every Super Bowl.

Kevin Williams decline will reverse with the Floyd addition. I give him at least two more productive years. He’s been the focus ever since Pat went away.

  18. khmer379 says: May 15, 2013 12:57 PM

In other word well sign him when he accept 2mil

  19. cpo187 says: May 15, 2013 1:03 PM

Technically Tokyo is correct. The Bears and Packers defense was statistically better then the Vikings last year.

The Floyd having short arms was just stupid though. I kept thinking of how dumb the analysts sounded talking about it during the draft. If you can ball, you can ball.

I do believe that the Vikings will have a better defense this year then the Packers, but maybe not as strong as the Bears just yet. They have a lot of good young talent that is just getting better in Minnesota with a great blend of veteran leadership.

  20. Frazier28/7 says: May 15, 2013 1:05 PM

    Packers had a better defense?

    Colin Kaepernick would disagree.

Vikings have a far superior D-line, better collection of linebackers, although Clay Matthews is a beast he doesn’t play all 4 positions, its even at secondary for both teams with the loss of Winfield, and Harrison Smith makes the Vikings increasingly better at safety with Sanford/Raymond lined up next to him.

Face it, if Aaron Rodgers goes down the Pack go down. And your o-line has done nothing to improve itself. But drafting 2 RB’s with your first 3 picks, that’s a good idea.

Veteran 4-3 linebackers are having a tough time getting paid right now. I think that teams running the 4-3 don’t view linebacker as a priority, particularly the “3rd man”. Vikings obviously like what they have in house more than spending cap space on a veteran upgrade.

That or Urlacher is just plain washed up and everyone knows it but him.

  24. tokyosandblaster says: May 15, 2013 1:21 PM

The Vikings got better up an down the roster and added weapons to a team with loads of talent coming off a 10-6 season. scared. that is all. they are scared. now que all the packer trolls trying to defend why they post in all the Vikings threads and how don’t fear the Vikings. lol. go for it fellas. try to explain it away. we see right through you

I guess if you judge how good a defense is by how young the average age of the starters is, you’ve got us there. I prefer to look at talent, but that’s just me.

All I know is the Packer defense didn’t look too good when our starting quarterback picked it apart while our running back put up 199. That’s the starting quarterback that you say is terrible, by the way.

I will admit that your defense looked pretty good against Joe Webb, who is now competing to make the team as a backup wide receiver.

What would you like to discuss?

    How about this?

Getting back to 2000 yards is going to be incredibly difficult for Adrian Peterson, because this year teams will gear up to stop him even more than they did last year. This will be a boon for Christian Ponder, who has a make or break season ahead. If he does not complete more passes downfield, the Vikings will not make it back to the Playoffs.

The Packers draft focused on solving two gaping problems, running the ball and stopping the run. If the Packers can stay healthy and get key contributions, raising the bar in each of the previously woeful categories, they should remain in first in the division. If they regress, The Vikings, Lions, and Bears could each claim the division crown.

I have no problem talking football like a civilized person. It’s just so hard to do when I have to get the trollhammer out so frequently.

  43. tokyosandblaster says: May 15, 2013 3:26 PM

    @7transponder,

You’re completely mistaken. I don’t talk like I’m a champion. I say things like Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy know what they’re doing, and they DO. They’ve proven it.

I was pissed when the Packers passed on Eddie Lacy in the first round. Why? Because I don’t have the inside knowledge that they do. You can imagine how happy I was to see him get picked up in the second.

When someone says that the Vikings clearly had a better defense–when clearly they DIDN’T–, and then tell me to shut up about how the Packers defense was better, I’ll go ahead and prove it with stats.

For one day last year, I applauded your MVP. I hate the vikings. That’s what you get.

Right now you may be talking stats and backing up your statements, but you and I both know that’s not always the case and you’re usually talking in absolutes that involves the Packers being superior in every facet of everything involving a comparison between them and the Vikings.

I know there’s some of us who do the same on Packer stories, but the fact that Vikings stories tend to dominate the “Most Commented” sidebar here on PFT tells me you guys take the cake when it comes to trolling around here. I guess I should feel honored that our team must be doing something right if it brings out such unabashed hatred from the “GREATEST FANS ON THE PLANET™”.

As always, this will be settled on the field, and dammit I’m so sick of this offseason hijinx – been this way here on PFT since they got popular during the Favre “Will he, won’t he” saga. Counting any team out in any season in the NFL is never smart, nor is assuming that past success = future success. Can we just play football already? *sigh*
