If you’re the sort of person who dreads the idea of hearing story after story about the Jets quarterback competition deep into August, you might be in luck.

On a conference call with season ticket holders Wednesday, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that he would like to see a fast resolution to what he calls a “bona fide” competition between Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms for spots on the team’s depth chart.

“This is going to be a competition and the reps will be distributed regarding how they’ve played in recent past history,” Mornhinweg said, via Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger. “And typically there will be a player at every position when there’s competition that will rise above and beyond the other players and hopefully that’s quick.”

Keeping the competition “bona fide” will require a lot of work from Mornhinweg when it comes to the distribution of reps. Mornhinweg said previous practices would go into the determination of snaps with the first team each day, a system which would seem to lend itself to a daily indication of who is on top of the depth chart. If the same person keeps landing that spot, the Jets would be wise to make him their starter since it is a new offense for all the quarterbacks and the eventual winner would certainly benefit from as much time as possible with the rest of the first unit.
