Here we go again.
The circus-like atmosphere surrounding the Jets’ quarterback position is getting crazier, with a report out today that David Garrard, who was brought in to provide some veteran leadership and stability, has told teammates today that he is planning to leave the team.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the 35-year-old Garrard, who has suffered from knee injuries for years, told two teammates he no longer plans to be with the Jets.
Asked about the story, Garrard told NFL Network’s Jeff Darlington, “I’m not talking about that right now. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.”
If Garrard is gone, that would be a major problem for the Jets, who were hoping he’d be able to mentor rookie Geno Smith and perhaps open the season as the starter if Smith isn’t ready. The Jets also have Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy on the roster, but there are serious doubts about whether the team has any long-term plans for either of them.
So the Jets may be looking for another quarterback. I hear Tim Tebow is available.
