Mike Goodson taken into custody on drug, gun charges

Mike Goodson AP

New Jets running back Mike Goodson has always been known for his speed.

But it’s amazing how quickly he got off to a poor start with a new team.

According to News 12 New Jersey, Goodson was taken into custody this morning on drug possession and weapons charges.

Goodson and a companion were in a stopped SUV along a highway, and he was being taken to a nearby hospital when officers searching the vehicle found marijuana and a loaded handgun.

Signed to a $6.9 million deal this offseason, Goodson would have ostensibly been teamed with Chris Ivory in an interesting backfield pairing.

But there have been questions about whether he could be trusted going back to his days at Texas A&M, and those appear to have been appropriate.

I suspect Joe McKnight planted the evidence.

  7. hanspard says: May 17, 2013 11:52 AM

You gotta give it to Reggie and the Raiders….they’re finally the team getting RID of these guys as they flake out, rather than being the team that gets them WHEN they flake out. I don’t think that’s an accident.

    Joe McKnight is pumped

So… a good fit with us, I guess. It’s not even June yet and I want this season to be over. Can’t it be 2014 already?

    Insert Joe McKnight joke here.

  11. catquick says: May 17, 2013 11:54 AM

  12. raiderufan says: May 17, 2013 11:55 AM

    Really dude?

The sheer amount of things that happen with the Jets is staggering…how is it possible? I realize this has nothing to do with how the Jets are run but they have yet another thing to deal with. One of the few good things this offseason just turned into yet another bad thing. Unreal .

  13. mindelm42 says: May 17, 2013 11:56 AM

Why were they bringing him to hospital? That doesn’t sound like SOP? Was he drugged out, or in an accident?

Just delete the contract with the undo button.

As much as you like seeing guys from the area on your team, there’s always the danger that they’ll meet back up with their boys and get into trouble.

Reggie shuts down Al’s halfway house and all of these criminals are wayward souls without a home. Thankfully, Reg believes in recycling so these pieces of trash are somebody else’s problem now. Way to kick the trash to the curb.

  26. jetstizzi85 says: May 17, 2013 12:13 PM

Gotta love all these comments! LOL….It is being reported that Goodson was the passenger NOT the driver like the article tries to make it sound. If you are a drunk passenger, no harm in that. ALSO, the driver was charged with the DUI and hand gun charge WITH a prior. PLEASE media reporters STOP trying to make these stories up before knowing the facts. It is all of you that are the true circus

  32. snnyjcbs says: May 17, 2013 12:34 PM

Nice to see the Raiders letting the bums go in Free Agency, what is stunning is just how fast the other NFL Teams snatch them up and than boom.

  33. mrposey5 says: May 17, 2013 12:36 PM

Joe Mcknight said “you’ll have to kill me to take this spot from me”

Think this is taking it a wee bit far, Goodson.

  34. blueballzny says: May 17, 2013 12:40 PM

    @raiderufan:

It very much has to do with how the Jets are run. No one forced them to sign Goodson. When management brings in guys with histories, these are the things that happen. Idzik will learn very quickly that he’s not in Seattle anymore.

  35. joemontanawasthegreatest says: May 17, 2013 12:42 PM

  36. jaewest304 says: May 17, 2013 12:44 PM

Hey all my (so-called) Raider Nation members here talking trash…All Davis DIDNT touch Goodson it was ur savior Reggie that traded for him…so clearing out the “trash” he brought in makes him a genius? All fair weather Raider fans need to head onto that SF bandwagon.

  37. ampats says: May 17, 2013 12:58 PM

    @jetstizzi85,

Goodson was charged with possesion of a handgun, possesion of a hollow point bullet, possesion of marijuana and possesion of drug paraphilia.

I think he has more problems than being a “drunk passenger”

Uncle Roger is going to hit him with a 4 game minimum suspension and the Jets off season continues to be the NFL Comedy Tour.

You’re totally missing the point of all of our criticism. He has 6.9 million reasons to not put himself in these positions. He should never have gotten into a car with someone that had drugs and a loaded gun. If he was using any of the drugs it just makes it even worse but when you’re livelihood can be taken away from you just by being connected to this situation you should avoid it. It’s his own fault that we are laughing at him. If you want to defend him, that’s fine….you are entitled to your opinion but so are the rest of us.

  42. peepeetoucher says: May 17, 2013 1:04 PM

LOL @ raider fans for acting like the Raiders cut Goodson and Reggie knew this was going to happen so they got rid of him and is cleaning up the franchise. He was a FA who they couldn’t afford to bring back even if they wanted to. Stop acting like Reggie did anything at all.

  43. drelms says: May 17, 2013 1:04 PM

Almost feel sorry for Jet season ticket holders, every time a new article comes out they have to cringe.

  44. scotrugby says: May 17, 2013 1:13 PM

Well I guess it will distract people from what happens on the field.

  46. pharoahjason says: May 17, 2013 1:17 PM

ummmm arent we all jumping to conclusion’s here? he was arrested because he was in a vehicle that contained a hand gun and drugs, who says it was his vehicle? or the drugs and hand gun belonged to him? so much for being innocent till proven guilty……….

  47. r8rsfan says: May 17, 2013 1:19 PM

I feel your pain Jets fan. Hard to get out of the rut when it’s 100 feet deep. Sometimes the reset button is the only resort.

  48. navyeoddavee9 says: May 17, 2013 1:25 PM

Couple of articles, say Jets have cut him

  49. hempoilcures says: May 17, 2013 1:33 PM

Yeah Reggie brought him in…for Bruce Campbell = not much. Goodson was needed as a cheap backup…once Reggie saw what he was about, didn’t even try to sign him. We as Raider fans thought there would be a chance that he was resigned….maybe Reggie knew he wasn’t the player the Raiders want ANYMORE. Hence, he goes away and becomes a problem.

If Al Davis would have brought him in, he would have given the kid a huge contract and said “he will be the next Bo Jackson”. This is the difference from what was the Oakland Raiders to what they are NOW.

How many more problems for the Jets? It’s everyday now that they have a drama. What is the matter with that front office picking up all this rubbish? Who is next I’d like to know.

  53. coachglove says: May 17, 2013 1:52 PM

This is what happens when you hire posse to be your “driver” or “bodyguard” and not a professional.

  54. dondiraider says: May 17, 2013 1:56 PM

  61. mackie66 says: May 18, 2013 3:43 PM

This story lacks tons of information. Like, why did the police search the vehicle. Goodson was parked on the side of the road, not exactly a crime. Being taken to the hospital, not exactly a crime. So why are the police officers searching their vehicle? Why did the police even stop to investigate a vehicle which was stopped legally on the side of the road. Was Goodson DUI? Naked?
Yo, Florio why did the cops search Goodson’s vehicle.
