Nominate your favorite Pats for their Mt. Rushmore

Getty Images

From the moment we commenced the process of accepting nominations for each team’s Mt. Rushmore, we’ve received scattered communications from Patriots fans lamenting the task of identifying the four greatest figures in franchise history.

The time has come, at least when it comes to coming up with the list of finalists.

Nominate your favorite Patriots below.  Eventually, we’ll come up with 10 or 12 on which you’ll all be able to vote.

And, no, Matt Walsh and Walt Coleman will not be among the finalists.  No matter how many times you try to nominate them.

  1. Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    Andre Tippett
    Jack Hannah

Two retro choices and of course the two constants throughout the dynasty.

  2. Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    John Hannah
    Tedy Bruschi
    ——————
    Andre Tippett
    Bruce Armstrong
    Sam Cunningham
    Adam Vinatraitor
    Gino Cappelletti
    Raymond Clayborn

  3. Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    John Hannah
    Andre Tippett

Argument over… those four are the best the Pats have to offer, and they’re all Hall of Famers.

Bruschi and the rest of the crew were great players too, but not like Tippett and Hannah were back in the day.

  4. Tom Brady
    Bruce Armstrong
    Andre Tippet
    Jack Hannah
    ———————
    Teddy Bruschi
    Willie McGinnest
    Gino Capeletti
    A sleeveless hoodie
    Adam viniatari
    Kevin Faulk
    Troy Brown
    ——————
NOT Hart Lee Dykes or Scott Sisson

  5. Irving Fryar (put them into SB)
    Tom terrific (yup)
    Lawyer Milloy (4x all pro)
    Adam Vinatieri (ca-lutch every time)
    Steve Grogan (see note below)

I always thougth Grogan looked liked Dracula when I was a kid with that neck pad he wore.

  6. My favorite Pats eh……….Well let’s see there’s, Pat O’Brien………..and Saint Pat(rick), and the late Mr Summerall, and uh,…..Pat(ty) LaBelle. Yep, got four of ’em.

  7. Tom Brady
    John Hannah
    Andre Tippett
    Mike Haynes

    —————-

    Bill Parcells
    Bill Belichick
    Troy Brown
    Steve Nelson
    Wes Welker
    Drew Bledsoe

  8. Do they have to be players or coaches?

If not then Bob Kraft should be up there.

If he doesn’t refuse a $75 million stadium buy-out, and instead take a leap of faith and plunk down a then-record amount to buy an NFL team on credit, St. Louis fans are today cheering on the St. Louis Stallions.

Overall if I have to pick only 4 I’m going with Bob K, Brady, Bruschi and Belichick.

No offense to the many, many, great players and coaches from the 60s – 90s, but they fell short of championships.

  9. You are kidding, right?

    Gogan
    Tippett

The ref who gave them Tuck Rule
    Roger for covering up Spygate

The latter two clearly Pats payroll.

  10. Steve Grogan
    Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    Gino Capelletti
    Andre Tippett

And Rodney Harrison if he beats the snot out of Florio some Sunday evening after another hate-filled rant against the Pats!

  11. Brady

    Belichick

    Ben Coates

    Tony Eason(ok, just kidding)

    Mo Lewis(kidding again)

Matt Light(for real. tough choice on the 4th but figured I should give it to one of the guys that helped keep Brady clean all those years)

  12. So many great players over the years, and I love Grogs, but you have to look at who was good enough to make the HOF first.

I’d start with Brady and Belichick, hands down. Those two – like it or not – are Canton bound, without a doubt. No coach in Patriot’s history can touch BB’s impact on the franchise.

After that, you HAVE to have John Hannah. Probably Andre Tippett.

There are two other HOF’ers, both who found even greater fame after leaving the Pat’s, Nick Buoniconti and Mike Haynes, so I’d say they truly don’t belong.

Troy Brown, Grogan, Stanley Morgan, Steve Nelson, Tedy Bruschi, Gino Cappeletti, and so many more, were incredible players, but they belong in a “Ring of Honor” type of thing, not up on that mountain. 😉

  13. Also John Hannah
    Kevin Faulk
    Andre Tippett
    Stanley Morgan
    Steve Grogan
    Willie McGinest
    Steve Nelson
    Sam “Bam” Cunningham
    Matt Light
    Ty Law
    Bill Belicheck
    Bill Parcells
    Robert Kraft
    There………let the hating begin.

  14. IMHO Brady, Belichick, John (Not Jack) Hannah are locks. The only debate is Kraft vs BSullivan. We would have no franchise if not for either of these guys, but, trainwreck as it became at the end, I have to give it to Billy Sullivan. Put 25k together to buy the last AFL franchise when he was in way over his head. Very involved in anti-trust litigation and the AFL/NFL merger. Made them the NE Pats. Bet a few of you remember seeing games at low rent stadiums with the grandstand burning down. My 1rst Pats game was at Fenway Park.

Still, my fav players are TBrown, SGrogan and SNelson. Three of the toughest hombres I’ve ever seen.

    2. the spy camera
    3. the spy camera
    4. the spy camera

    honorable mention: the tuck rule

  16. TOM BRADY- one of the best QB’s in the history of the NFL, 3SB’s, multiple MVP’s including a unanimous vote for one, several probowls, and a TEAM player.
BILL BELICHICK- in my humble opinion the best coach in the history of the NFL, multiple (3) superbowl’s in an era where dynasties are extinct. Excellent as both a coach and a defacto GM.
ROBERT KRAFT- Before Bob Kraft the Patriots had only reached one super bowl, after he bought the team the Patriots have reached 6 super bowls and won 3, all in 18 years. A fun stat, before he bought the team they only won 2 AFC East division titles, after he bought the team they have won 12.
JOHN HANNAH- The best guard in NFL history, a true mauler, according to SI he is the 2nd best offensive linemen in the history of the game.

  17. Bledsoe belongs in there somewhere. He really turned the Pats around in the 90’s and led them to a Superbowl.

  18. Bill Belichick
    Tom Brady
    Robert Kraft
    John Hannah
    Andre Tippitt
    Rodney Harrison
    Ben Coates
    Tedy Bruschi
    Troy Brown
    Logan Mankins
    Bruce Armstrong
    Rob Gronkowski
    Willie McGinnist
    Mike Vrabel

That about sums up the tainted Mt. Spy Ring

  20. The Pats Mt. Rushmore would simply be two words carved into the mountainside…”Tuck Rule”

  21. It says quite a lot about an organization when they have a footnote reading “And, no, Matt Walsh and Walt Coleman will not be among the finalists. No matter how many times you try to nominate them.”

  22. Correction. There’s no discussion here. When you think of Patriots, you think of one of these 4.

    Robert Kraft
    Bill Belichick
    Tom Brady
    Adam Vinatieri

  23. He probably won’t make the final four, but I think Drew Bledsoe deserves a spot among the 10-12 finalists.

Brady and Belichick are obvious. I know he’s a kicker, but they haven’t won a Super Bowl since Adam Vinatieri left.

  24. Mo Lewis, the man who began the Tom Brady era.

Mark Henderson, the stadium’s snowplow operator, who cleared a spot on the snowy field specifically for New England kicker John Smith so he could kick the winning field goal to give the Patriots the 3–0 in 12/12/1982. from Wiki

Zeke Mowatt, failed to understand how to treat other human being, search Lisa Olson.

    The Tuck Rule

  25. Vinateri
    Belicheck
    Brady
    Bruschi
    Martin
    McGinnest
    Tippett
    Ty Law
    Troy Brown
    Kevin Faulk

  26. Brady
    Belichick
    Hannah
    Tippett

Hon. Mention: And I would almost never even mention a placekicker any conversation about a figurative Mount Rushmore — but without the clutch kicks in games decided by a field goal, history would be a lot different. The Super Bowl Titles decided by the margin of a Vinatieri kick – not to mention his heroics in the Tuck Rule game blizzard that was necessary to get the Patriots Dynasty on track.

  27. Belicheck should not be considered after spy gate. Heck the stuff with Rams Superbowl walkthrough wasn’t even fully recovered yet. Lets see how far the rabbit hole goes. This I e goes do deep it would damage the league office. You won’t ever see the full truth, but we have an idea.

Bad enough you nominated yourself, Matt Walsh, but TWICE????

Every moron who nominated Matt Walsh, the camera guy, etc., give yourself a pat on the back, you and six thousand other morons had the same post.

  29. That’s easy: Kraft the owner, Belichick the coach, Brady the QB,and the official who called the Tuck Rule. I can’t imagine any other Pats on this list…Vinatieri maybe…before BB and Brady, it was as if the Pats didn’t even exist.

  30. Walt Coleman is 100% responsible for the 1st Super Bowl they were awarded,so I guess his ugly face should be the centerpiece.Hopefully it would be covered in bird droppings because the Tuck call was full of sh*t !!

  31. Tom Brady- ’nuff said
Steve Grogan- Winner and class act
    Andre Tippet- BEAST!
Adam Vinitari- Won them two super bowls

John Hannah and Drew Bledsoe close consideration…….

  32. What makes you or Patriots fans think the job of picking four Pats is any more difficult than that of picking four Steelers, 49ers, Giants, Cowpatties, Raiders, Colts, Redskins, Packers…?

  33. Steve Grogan
    John Hannah
    Stanley Morgan
    Mike Haynes

None of the current players (or coach) are worthy of their Mt. Rushmore.

    Only vintage Patriots.

  34. I live in NE and am a life-long Oakland Raider fan. That said, I give credit where credit is due. I will never give credit to the modern era Patriots due to the tuck rule and the videotaping scandal, just like I won’t acknowledge Elway and the Broncos due to their flagrant cheating on the salary cap.

  35. matt walsh ernie adams josh (get caught twice) mcdaniels krafts wallet(that bought tuck rule) bledsoe hannah tippet faulk ..last four played real football no cameras microphones refs or gimmicks

  36. @ 49erdynasty

The only thing it says is that PFT is smart enough to recognize the number of morons who think they’re being funny or original.

I think you all should read the rules as pertaining to the Tuck Rule and the league’s video taping guidelines. Enlighten yourselves.

  37. @ bigal1952

And I don’t give any credit to the Raiders of the 70s because of Roughing the Passer and steroids.

    What’s your point?

  38. bigal you the man bump them new pats with the flying elvis bs the minutemen wer tru football players I’m the biggest pat hater in new England n I know who should have ben respected on there team in past but definitely none now since bledsoe got hurt….I disliked them even b4 96 vs packs n now Ive grown to HATE them frauds especially tom lady who cries everytime his skirt touches the field

  39. John Hannah
    Mike Haynes
    Andre Tippett
    Steve Grogan

As mentioned above, only vintage Pats are worthy of their Mount Rushmore.

  40. 1 Tom Brady
    2 Bill Belichick
    3 Bruce Armstrong
    4 Andre Tippett

Lol @ the Bruschi mentions. Was also gonna throw Curtis Martin in but hes more of a Jet

  41. John Hannah, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady & Troy Brown

(Hannah, BB & Brady are definites. Troy Brown’s remarkable versatility got him on my list)

  42. Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    John Hannah
    Bob Kraft

If you exclude owners, Gino Cappelletti.

  43. Tom Brady
    AdamVinitari
    John Hannah
    Steve Grogan

This applies to players only. Otherwise Grogan gets bumped for Bellichik. Also, if coaches are included, Bill Parcells disgraceful behavior before the SuperBowl disqualifies him.

  44. My 12 would be (with my 4 above the line):

    Tom Brady
    John Hannah
    Andre Tippett
    Stanley Morgan
    ——————————-
    Robert Kraft
    Troy Brown
    Bill Belichick
    Adam Vinatieri
    Tedy Bruschi
    Steve Grogan
    Mike Haynes
    Bruce Armstrong

I hate the number of people voting in this whose memories of teams goes back no farther than 1995. Sheesh, youngsters, study your history.

  45. The correct list in order:
    Belichick
    Brady
    Hannah
    Tippett

    My All time team
    Brady, Bledsoe
    Curtis Martin, Cunningham, Dillon, Nance,
Stanley Morgan, Welker, Randy Moss (1 great year)
    Gronkowski, Coates Russ Francis
Hannah, Armstrong, Mankins, Light, Brock, Gray

    Seymour, Wilfork, Mcginest, ???
    Tippett, Nelson, Buonconti, Bruschi
    Haynes, Law, Clayborn, Harrison

  46. Must people be so nasty? I don’t like the Pats, either, but that doesn’t take away from their talent.

    John Hannah
    Andre Tippett
    Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick

Yeah and your team had a shady owner who was in trouble with the law, and the Broncos won back to back SBs while cheating the cap, and the Dolphins illegally tampered to get Shula as a coach and were docked a first round pick. Get over yourself.

I feel that Mt Rushmore players should be guys who were with the team their whole career, or close to it. Though I appreciate Vinatieri’s clutchness, he took off to kick in easier conditions and solidify his HOF status as well as get a slightly larger payday. All of those are well within his right to do, but I can’t put him on Rushmore due to that. Same with Curtis Martin, who I respected greatly as a player.

  48. Harder than I thought…

    Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    Wes Welker
    Russ Francis

HM: Grogan, Stanley Morgan, Andre Tippet, Teddy Bruschi, Adam Vinatieri, Robert Kraft, Drew Bledsoe

  49. Bill Belichick
    Tom Brady
    Andre Tippett
    Tedy Bruschi
    Troy Brown
    Vince Wilfork
    Stanley Morgan
    John Hannah
    Kevin Faulk
    Ben Coates
    Bruce Armstrong
    Ty Law

  50. The dynasty started with Kraft, Parcells and Bledsoe. The greatest success came with Belicheck and Brady. The other greatest impact players throughout that time period that spent most of their careers with the Patriots are; Bruce Armstrong, Ty Law, Tedy Bruschi, Troy Brown, Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour. You could add Wes Welker also.

Greats from the previous eras would have to include; John Hannah, Andre Tippett, Gino Cappelletti, Steve Grogan, Stanley Morgan, Steve Nelson, John Morris and Mike Haynes

  51. John Hannah!
    Tom Brady
    Steve Grogan
    Steve Nelson

    Close:
    Gino Cappelletti
    Tedy Bruschi
    Troy Brown
    Andre Tippett
    Vince Wilfork
    Jim Nance
    Nick Buonconti
    Russ Francis
    Stanley Morgan
    Willie McGinest
    Ben Coates
    Darryl Stingley
    Mike Haynes
    Matt Light
    Rodney Harrison
    Ty Law

  52. It has to be these four regardless of the voting.
    And in this order:

    Billy Sullivan
    Robert Kraft
    Bill Belichick
    Tom Brady

  53. John Hannah, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and I know its controversial, but I say Drew Bledsoe too.

  54. My initial post was for Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, John Hannah and Bob Kraft (If you exclude owners, Gino Cappelletti).

On second thought, the Black athlete has gotten the short end of the respect card in Boston (including Stanley Morgan). I like the idea of adding Troy Brown, a free agent that made the team playing special teams, worked himself into a a slot receiver role, and the consummate team player.

  55. The Core Four:

    John Hannah
    Bill Belichick
    Tom Brady
    Mike Haynes

    Honorable Mentions:

    Billy Sullivan
    Robert Kraft
    Bruce Armstrong
    Andre Tippett
    Stanley Morgan
    Steve Nelson
    Vito “Babe” Parilli
    Jim Lee Hunt
    Bob Dee
    Gina Cappelletti
    Drew Bledsoe
    Steve Grogan
    Jon Morris
    Ben Coates
    Jim Nance
    Doug Flutie
    Brian Holloway
    Irving Fryar
    Deion Branch
    Raymond Clayborn
    Houston Antwine
    Asante Samuel
    Vince Wilfork
    Mike Vrabel
    Teddy Bruschi
    Wes Welker
    Willie McGinest
    Rodney Harrison
    Adam Vinatieri
    Richard Seymour
    Ty Law
    Troy Brown (maybe)?

  56. Tippett and Hannah are in the Pro Football HOF. It’s be hard to leave them out, especially Hannah, who’s considered one of the all-time great OL’s.
    Belichick and Brady.
IMO, this is one of the easier ones.

  57. Locks:
    Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick

    Then it becomes interesting:

    Bill Parcells?
    Bob Kraft?
The Patriots wouldn’t be anywhere without them, so it is tough to leave them off the list.

    John Hannah?
    Steve Grogan?
    Troy Brown?
    Andre Tippett?
    Gino Cappelletti?
    Bruce Armstrong?
I really good argument could be made for all of these players.

I would not consider Welker, Moss, McGinest, Vrabel, Bledsoe, Martin or Vinateri based upon their playing time in other uniforms. There are too many “lifers”

  58. I dare you to include Matt Walsh and Matt Coleman in the poll vote, just to see how the votes turn out.

  59. What about Ty Law? He racked up 3-4 INT games against Peyton Manning.

Steve Grogan is tough. Maybe he’s the Miss Congeniality of this contest. Best on-field charisma and personality, eluding linebackers in style, and contributing mightily to the Patriots first SB appearance.

Who should NOT make this list:

Asante Samuel (his poor 4th quarter in 2007 SB let 19-0 slip through his fingers and this follows a year in which he clamored to get out of NE).

  60. As long as Morgan Stanley is on there…loved him as a kid for some reason (not even sure he had that great of a career)
Him and Wesley Walker made me like the AFC East for a while in my impressionable days

  61. Uh, let’s see…

    Bill Belicheck
    The Camera
    The Microphone
The guy who did the cover-up

  62. Lots of great players, but it has to be:

    Tom Brady
    Bill Belichick
    Robert Kraft
    Andre Tippett

Any list without Kraft is nonsense. He’s the only reason the Patriots aren’t a St. Louis franchise. Now they’re one of the great teams/businesses in all of pro sports.

    Honorable Mention:
    Drew Bledsoe
    Randy Moss
    Tedy Bruschi
    Rodney Harrison
    Vince Wilfork
    Irving Fryar
    Wes Welker
    Junior Seau
    Troy Brown
    Jack Hanna
    Geno Capiletti

  63. To all the MORONS still cry babying about spygate get a life read the video tapping rules, there were other teams doing the same thing……Mt.Rushmore. ….Belichick,Bledsoe Brady,Bob Kraft. Nuff said
