Tony Romo out of OTAs after surgery to remove cyst from back

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will miss Organized Team Activities after having surgery to remove a cyst from his back.

Romo, however, says there’s nothing to worry about, and that the procedure was fairly minor.

“If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could,” Romo told the Dallas Morning News. “This is just about being smart. That’s why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp. No way will it have an impact. And I still think there’s a good chance I’m on the field for minicamp.”

Although it hadn’t been reported previously, Romo had the cyst removed a month ago. He said the surgery was simple enough that his wife could drive him home that day, and he was playing with their son that evening.

“It was a pretty routine afternoon,’’ Romo said. “I was back at the [Cowboys] complex the next day to go through what we would do in the teaching sessions and the throwing sessions this off-season. . . . It was not much of anything, I just went in and had them look at it. It was more of an ache than anything. I just thought, ‘well, it’s something I’d rather not feel.’ I’d rather be 100 percent, not 96 percent. It’s done and it’s made me feel better.”

And while Romo isn’t feeling enough to get to work now, he’s expecting to be as good as ever before the season starts.

  1. I’m not sure this is what Jerry meant when he said he wanted Romo to emulate Manning…

  2. Can’t wait to see this trainwreck blow up once the season starts. One of the Top 5 highest paid QBs with nothing to show for except good stats. Too bad that good stats doesn’t equal a Lombardi trophy.

  3. If it happened a month ago and was minor, it should have healed to the point that there is no scab or danger of tear, meaning, why is he holding out of OTA’s? As a quarterback, not like he is going to get hit during camp. Something does not add up here.

  4. OH NO! They removed his USB connection.

Now how is he going to be more active in “game planning”?

  5. With a similar career path and success rate, can Matt Ryan’s cyst issues be far behind?

  6. I hope this doesn’t affect his golf. Missing work is one thing, but no one wants to mess up his golf game.

  7. Don’t care what his Passer Rating or other stats are. In 7 yrs as Cowboy’s starter he’s only won more that 8 gms twice, made the playoffs 2x and has a 1-3 record. Often throws the bad pick at the wrong time. Always making headlines for extracurricular activities(golf, love life), usually indicates someone not working hard enough. Dallas may have other probs, but it’s a bottom line league.

  8. Actually skippy Matt Ryan was a first overall pick tony romo was an undrafted free agent so besides the one playoff win exactly where is their career path similar. Matt Ryan is a bigger flop IMO because of the draft status and one playoff win

  9. In all likely hood it was a pilonidal cyst located at the very bottom of the tailbone/top of the butt crack. It is not a terribly serious operation but it is no joke either.

It would have kept flaring up if not removed permanently. It is VERY painful when it flares up and you would not want to have to play an NFL game. There are no stitches so recovery time is a bit longer as in at least two months before he has to stop dressing it.

In four months it will be like it never happened. My son had this done the day after Christmas while he was home from college and he is 100% healed now.

  10. I just went to the zoo and checked out the primate section. I couldn’t find one species called “cyst”. They had one called “Simpson” but I thought he already had that one removed.

  11. Hopefully this will facilitate a full shoulder turn and allow him to drive the ball longer and straighter.

  12. Anyone want to bet he is swinging a golf club before he throws a pass in practice? Now all we will hear all year is “his great comeback from back surgery”.

  13. Can some one explain to me why romo is having surgery now instead of having it back in early January. Cause if Iam right his season ended in early January once again. I just don’t get it.

  14. Romo will always be suspect until the team wins some meaningful (e.g. playoffs as in multiple in one season) games…

I always laugh when the fanbois drop his stats into the conversation; Dan Marino has great stats but whenever he is mentioned the sentence includes “but he never won the SB”.

Come back in 10 more years when Romo has played as many seasons as Marino…

  15. Marino has NINE playoff victories. Come back when Romo gets anywhere near that number.

Career Passer Rating for Romo: 95.6

Romo is in the top 5 all time
    ***********************************************

Peyton is 9-11 with a Superbowl win.
Romo is 1-3 with no Superbowl wins.

How in the hell is that top 5 of all time????

Romo has a big year every year, right up until the games actually matter.

He’s great in the Pre-Season opener!!!

  18. HAHA he can’t play a month afterwards. Good to see he’s still working so hard. Remember when he went to Cancun with big Jessica Simpson right before the playoffs? Great work ethic! Cowboys superbowl favorites once again!

While I hate to defend Oh-No Romo, the league’s most overpaid QB, it is POSSIBLE that the cyst developed after the season and that he had it looked at the removed now.

But the cyst is gone now, it hasn’t had an effect on how he looks in the mirror and won’t change his golf swing, and those are the important things to Romo, aren’t they?

If Jessica Simpson had been my g/f back then and I was the “star” QB, I would have been tempted to go, too. I wouldn’t have done it, but it would have been sooooo inviting.

Romo’s priorities were in question before, and the perception that he doesn’t dedicate himself to the game quite like a championship quarterback have carried forward ever since.

Yes, but Romo ONLY won more that 8 gms twice, made the playoffs 2x and has a 1-3 record in playoffs and no SB ring… Not even enough for HOF induction so far. Marino never a SB but but won more playoff games and at least went to the SB game twice in his career. Peyton Manning won more playoff games & also went to 2 SB games (won 1 SB).
