Irsay pledges funds for tornado relief

An aerial view of tornado damage to neighborhoods in Moore, Oklahoma Reuters

Colts owner Jim Irsay can be quirky.  At times, unpredictable.  At other times, a little belligerent.  And he’s taken a few shots at yours truly, who has taken a few shots at him.

But when there’s a cause that would benefit from the donation of funds, he’s typically at the front of the line.

Irsay has pledged to donate up to $25,000 to the tornado relief effort in Moore, Oklahoma, matching contributions made by the general public.

Donations can be made through the Colts’ official website or the Colts’ page on the American Red Cross site.

Before anyone complains that $25,000 is a drop in the bucket for a billionaire, keep this in mind:  It’s still $25,000.  How many other billionaires out there aren’t giving 25 cents to the effort?

So we applaud Irsay’s efforts, we encourage other billionaires, millionaires, thousandaires, and hundredaires to do what they can, and we’ll be glad to publicize other efforts by other NFL teams to raise money to help folks whose insurance policies will take them only so far through this time of intense crisis.

Awesome move by Irsay and the Colts. I hope other teams step up and do the same. NFL is a powerful figure and could make a huge difference.

Again awesome job by Jim Irsay.

    32 teams x $50,000 ($25,000 match + $25,000 from fans) = $1.6M

Time for everyone else to step up and do the same. Good on Irsay!

I would venture to guess that almost every billionaire in America is giving something to this cause. They may not necessarily be aware of it, but in general they’re giving a lot of money to charity.

I’ll bet Browns fans wish the worst thing their owner ever did was send a few ill advised tweets.

Well we know your owner wont be donating, all his money is tied up in Sanchez and paying Denver for Tebow…….

Plus I bet Mr. Irsay will still have a scotch, I would.

Mara should take a break from trying to find a way to screw rival teams and open his silver spoon checkbook a little.

Typical Patriots hater. For the record after the bombings at the Boston Marathon Kraft donated (personally) $125K, then said the Patriots organization would match any public donations up to $125K. That’s 10X what Irsay put up. And as of a couple weeks ago, they had $675K – a couple weeks ago, so I’m sure it’s well beyond that now.

Keep hating haters, the fact remains that Kraft and the Patriots organization is a class act, no matter what your opinions may be.

Kevin Durant is donating 1 MILLIONNNNNN DOLLARS

Come on Cheap BILLIONAIRE!! Your 25k is about 2c out of my pocket… my 10 dollar donation would be about 1 MILLION Dollars out of yours!! Plus all the TAX Writeoffs you get from that!

If your gonna just DONATE 25c to get Headlines… Dont do it… Do it with out telling anyone.

Its Biblical… dont stand on the corner and Say “LOOK AT ME” im So Great!!

Do it from your hart you OLD FART!! And yes 25K will help. 250k…. 1 MILLION will help a lot more and set you back 1 dinner with the Prez or what ever Rich B@stards spend their BILLIONS on…

Kevin Durant Donated $1 Million and didn’t tell anybody. The Red Cross announced it after he said to keep it quiet! Then the OKC Thunder matched his donation! They did it because they actually wanted to help…
Not because they wanted to Tweet about it 100 times as a publicity stunt like Irsay!!

    Not Impressed!!!

That’s probably the first time anyone’s ever accuse Irsay of being the best owner in the league.

25K for Irsay is like 25 CENTS to you and me…PLUS he made damn sure it got maximum publicity

“best owner”? maybe “best self-aggrandizing cheapskate” would be moire appropriate
