Rams move 403-pound rookie from defense to offense

Al Lapuaho, Thomas Brown AP

We noted before the draft that Terrell Brown was a 6-foot-10, 388-pound defensive lineman from Ole Miss who had drawn some interest from NFL teams. But that’s not quite right.

Actually, Rams coach Jeff Fisher says, Brown is a 6-foot-10, 403-pounder. And Fisher says that after the Rams signed Brown as an undrafted free agent, they decided that his future is on the offensive line.

“Actually, we weighed him in at 403,” Fisher told reporters today. “We had him in for the tryout and he had some issues that we had to clear up from a physical standpoint. But he got that put behind us. We worked him out on both sides of the ball, defensive line and offensive line, and we felt like his best position would be right tackle. [Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau] said he’d love to have him. He’s a defensive lineman that we’ve converted to offensive lineman.”

Fisher also noted that with Brown’s height, the Rams might be able to put him on the field goal block team.

“He might be able to block some kicks,” Fisher said.

And if he can’t do that, he might have a future in the WWE, which is looking for some big-bodied football players. And it might help Brown make it in professional wrestling that he already has experience with folding chairs.

It looks like he will need to learn how to block without grabbing the facemask.

Sign Shaq while you’re at it and just use him on PATs or FG tries. Would’ve blocked Adam Vinatieri’s GW kick…

How many Rams did it take to move him?

  9. Heisenberg says: May 23, 2013 6:23 PM

No way can you play this guy for a full game. If he has any career at all, it’s going to be a short one. His knees won’t hold up, & I guarantee he’s gonna have heart problems down the line. If he really wants to play in the NFL, he should lose about 50-60 lbs & try again.

  10. demolition510 says: May 23, 2013 6:23 PM

I hope he has quick feet

  11. justintuckrule says: May 23, 2013 6:24 PM

So much for OTAs being “non-contact”. Dude just got mugged by a 400 lb monster.

  12. getyourownname says: May 23, 2013 6:24 PM

    Being moved to offense? Ho-hum.

Now if he had been moved to special teams, THAT would garner attention.

  13. newyorkshets says: May 23, 2013 6:25 PM

Even rex ryan and mark mangino said damn he’s fat!!

  14. pnut87 says: May 23, 2013 6:25 PM

Ok, I was wondering where he went. I thought that if he had any catching ability, line him him up as a TE. Throw the ball high to him, I dare you to find someone who could cover that mass of humanity…

  15. leftyguns21 says: May 23, 2013 6:28 PM

id be worried with a man this tall on the o-line. the qb cant throw his direction without worrying about hitting him in the back of the helmet

  16. schmitty2 says: May 23, 2013 6:29 PM

If he has any sort of vertical at all they better put him in the middle on EVERY fg attempt by the opposing team

  17. swagjag says: May 23, 2013 6:35 PM

Seems like diabetes is just around the corner for this guy.

  21. iced107 says: May 23, 2013 6:45 PM

hopefully the team calls him “Tiny”

  22. nomesayin says: May 23, 2013 6:46 PM

If he is on the offensive line in this picture, he has just cost the offense 10 yards. If he is on defense, he just cost his team 5% of the field & an automatic first down. He’s off to a slow start.

Everybody knows that the taller OTs struggle for leverage against NFL DEs. I would think he might be more effective on the DL.

  23. jayhawk6 says: May 23, 2013 6:46 PM

We need a new tent. How can we get one of his jerseys?

  35. beerbratscheese says: May 23, 2013 7:36 PM

So he originally weighed 388 and now he weighs 403. He’s gained 15 pounds since the draft. I wonder what he’ll weigh at the start of the season?

  36. ghostofgilchrist says: May 23, 2013 7:46 PM

Not sure I get the kick blocking theory….seems you’d have better luck with a 6’5″ guy that can jump more than a few inches off the ground.

  37. icdogg says: May 23, 2013 7:51 PM

Tackle-eligible play on the goal-line… he can just stand there and put his hands up in the air.

  40. jimmylions says: May 23, 2013 8:27 PM

Shades of The Fridge! Holy cow!

Obviously he’s not skinny, but he’s not all flab either. He runs the 40 in 5.8, which isn’t really NFL speed, but it’s not too shabby for a man of this size. It sounds like the big issue will be to work on his flexibility so he can get under defenders.

If he goes the WWE route, I want to see him in a Battle Royale against a ring filled little luchadores.

  43. isphet71 says: May 23, 2013 9:01 PM

I’m actually pretty surprised we aren’t seeing more 500lb sumo wrestlers on an offensive line. Those dudes could SERIOUSLY run block. 3 foot burst into some other dude for a knockdown.

  44. harrisonhits2 says: May 23, 2013 9:12 PM

He doesn’t need to block any kicks, he just needs to create the push that lets someone else block them.

  45. garyhd01 says: May 23, 2013 9:13 PM

where do I begin hey quest !! how long will it take ahmad brooks to get around him and whoever said he better have quick feet I wanna know when was the last time he saw his feet I agree he should get down to a svelte 375 and hire someone to tie his shoes maybe this brooks guy lol

  46. istateyourname says: May 23, 2013 9:15 PM

    6’10″ + 403 lbs = 42.1 BMI, Severely Obese.
    He should be taller.

  47. heyguru1969 says: May 23, 2013 9:17 PM

No. 79 in the white shirt has given up on the play and is left hoping his life will be spared.

    His poor, little heart.

  57. cchicinfan says: May 23, 2013 10:44 PM

He is no fatter than most any NFL defensive tackles or offensive linemen. The guy is 6’10″ and probably has a lower body fat ratio than many 6′ 2 or 6’3″ players carrying 320 to 330 lbs-and there are many in that range.

  58. cesarnoel says: May 23, 2013 10:55 PM

Coach Beau has envisioned doing more “pancake” blocks more than traditional blocks. The dude is basically immovable due to his size that he doesn’t need to be on a 3-point stance.

  59. ballreaper says: May 23, 2013 10:57 PM

It has always boggle my mind that teams don’t have the foresight in thinking outside the box(alot more than they should). When it comes to converting certain players they DRAFT later in the rounds.I have always felt since there seem to be an abundance of D-line players in the draft, why not take as many and see who you could work to convert to your O-LINE.

  60. saints4life57 says: May 23, 2013 11:03 PM

Soooooo he’s tall and fat? Thought it took more than that to play in the NFL? Guess not!

  61. sbchampsagain says: May 23, 2013 11:10 PM

Put him at tackle. Even if he has zero talent. it will still take 4 seconds to get around him. That should be enough time for Bradford to get rid of the ball!

  62. Patskrieg dot com says: May 23, 2013 11:12 PM

First found out about this guy from a YouTube clip of Brown decimating a folding chair he’s trying to sit on. The Patriots were poking around him for a while.

  63. crownofthehelmet says: May 23, 2013 11:45 PM

The first thing he was taught was the old “lift the facemask and poke him in the eye” move.

  65. threatlevelxmidnight says: May 24, 2013 2:26 AM

No doubt they’re moving him to the offensive line to block big Red Bryant. What a beast.

  66. latenightroach says: May 24, 2013 4:27 AM

  67. thatchrisguy says: May 24, 2013 4:48 AM

  68. oldbyrd says: May 24, 2013 7:23 AM

He can always be a poster boy for The New York City Mayor.

  69. jimmysee says: May 24, 2013 7:58 AM

    403 pounds!

How could this guy have taken and passed an NFL physical?!

I hope he has a lot of life insurance.

It is impossible for his body to sustain him for very long at that weight given the extreme physical demands of the NFL.

I am fearful we will be reading about a 30 year old who suffered cardiac arrest all too soon.

  70. skins4me says: May 24, 2013 7:59 AM

Id like to see the Rams help this guy get on a plan that helps him lose about 30-40 pounds befor the season starts. Then maybe keep him on it until he is down about 70 lbs. That way maybe he will live past 45.

  71. johnheisman says: May 24, 2013 9:07 AM

They better hope he never gets hurt in a game, forget the golf cart they will need a crane to get him of the field.

I also head that they plan to use a 3 digit number for this player. My understanding is that he will wear #747.

    John Heisman

  72. fordmandalay says: May 24, 2013 9:11 AM

The NFL has been making a big show about how concerned they are about player safety – well they need to start taking serious looks at guys like this, not only for the safety of other players (400 pounds falling on someone?) but for the health of these tubs. The life-shortening number of problems being that heavy is too many to list. It’s time to enact a weight limit for players, 300 pounds at most, better 285.

  73. cup1981 says: May 24, 2013 10:14 AM

No need to worry; they only signed him to help give Tavon Austin a little much-needed shade during OTAs and training camp.

  74. azbearsfan says: May 24, 2013 11:18 AM

    Enough with the WWE garbage.

  75. bspurloc says: May 24, 2013 5:05 PM

    I dont understand the move….

On defense why wouldnt he be in line to block more passes than TooTall jones??!
