RG3 on the field, throwing passes at Redskins’ OTAs

Robert Griffin III is back on the Redskins’ practice field at Organized Team Activities, four months after reconstructive knee surgery.

Griffin is able to drop back, set his feet and throw passes. Albert Breer of NFL Network posted videos of Griffin at work, and Griffin does not appear to have any difficulty moving around and passing. He’s not doing any full-speed running, but from watching what he is doing, you wouldn’t know he suffered a major knee injury in January.

Obviously, there’s a big difference between non-contact drills and playing in an NFL game, and Griffin appears to be working primarily with other players who are rehabilitating injuries, rather than partaking in the regular team workouts. But the fact that Griffin is on the field has to be taken as a good sign that all the optimistic talk about Griffin’s recovery proceeding ahead of schedule was justified.

If Griffin has progressed this far from January to May, there’s every reason for Washington fans to be optimistic that Griffin will make enough progress from May to September that he’ll be on the field for Week One.

  1. Its great that hes back and I hope hes 100% by the start of the season but whats more important in May — getting him some light reps with the hobbled, or letting his knee rest and recover.

Especailly after what happened last season. Its like they want the media to know hes better more than they want him to actually be better.

  2. Queue the haters claiming that:

    1. Shanahan is rushing him back and will ruin his career.

    2. The Redskins field sucks…anyone stepping on it is taking their life into their own hands.

    3. RGIII will be a shell of the man he was last year and will have roughly the productivity of Bubby Brister.

    4. The Redskins suck.

Finally, the following terms must be used in the course of this thread: RGKnee, RGLeaf, Redtails, Foreskins, Shanarat, Skeletor, and “Little Danny.”

There, I think I’ve pretty much taken care of the whole thread now…no need to comment further.

  3. This is starting to sound too similar to the Derrick Rose situation. If these updates keep trying to make him sound way ahead of schedule the pressure to suit him up week one will be out of control.

  4. That’s what winners do! ” You play to win the game”

#Bless the Redskins and No Other Team!!! HTTR

  5. Shanahan’s next press conference: “If his knee wasn’t ready for practice, could I hit it with a baseball bat, like this?” *swing*

  6. Hmmmm……how about the injury and surgery wasnt as serious as what everyone was making it out to be?

  7. Doesn’t matter how healthy RG3 is this year, the league is going to catch up to him.

Skins ran a gimmick offense last year and in the process sacrificed RG3’s development as a QB for the sake of a few wins and a brief playoff appearance.

This is the Michael Vick experience 2.0.

  8. I think to be on the safe side that he needs to come back after the bye week he needs all the time he can get. there’s no point of trying to rush it. we got Kirk cousins.

  9. I love how people act like RGIII should be on a recliner with his legs up, never moving, and getting sponge baths. Haha.

  10. This and AP… who the hell operated on Derrick Rose??? Makes you think DR got a brand new knee installed.

  11. It’s called the read option, you take what the defense gives you.If they have 9 in the box you pass if they go back to defend the pass you run.

  12. Gimmicky offenses don’t finish 4th in total offense and 5th in scoring or win ROY or set rookie QB passer rating records. Catman72 is an idiot for sure. Mike Vick never accomplished those things in his first season. Why do folks forget that RG3 can actually pass the ball? Sorry, the league isn’t going to catch up to a 23 yr old QB with 4.3 speed….not until he’s maybe 30 yrs old. So, get used to him beating your a%$#@!

  13. Great skill set but whether he’s rushing it or not, prediction is he won’t make it past 5 games without an injury. Luck was clearly the best QB out of that draft

  14. The most electric player in the league. I saw him at met life stadium and was mesmerized. As a Giants fan I got to give him his props. As a realisitc human being, the handwriting is on the wall. The knee combined with his style of play will make his career a short one…

  15. So, letting him throw passes on the side, with other players that are rehabbing injuries is somehow being framed as Shanahan rushing him back? Gotta love haters.

Oh, and for the Raven fan that calls him the worst QB in Maryland. You do realize that our 2 rookie qbs, a third string rookie CB and PR, and a first year kicker laid a nice little beat down on your team last season. Get it straight. Your own fans wanted to get rid of your overpriced “Elite” qb after that game. It must really suck to realize that you are now stuck with Flacco for the foreseeable future and your team will now be relegated to the most irrelevant team in the state.

  16. Funny to read what all the JEALOUS haters have to say. Wonder how many would trade their teams QB straight up for RG3? Bet most would in a minute. LOL. HTTR

  17. If it weren’t for the Skins’ trolls that have polluted this site, we’d all be rooting for this guy to get healthy because he’s that fun to watch. Unfortunately, you’ve all forced us to hope that he re-tears his knee up so bad that they are forced to amputate it from the hip down. Hope you’re happy that you’ve brought this negativity on yourself. Only reason why, as you say, “haterz gonna hate”.

  18. I love how so many people commenting here seem to think they are doctors and know when he should be participating in physical activity.

  19. Do people not realize that moving around and keeping the knee moving is part of the recovery? If he just sat in a bed all day the knee would become stiff and not heal properly. Jesus

Er-g3 . This guy should do wheel chair commercials. #outoftheleaguesoon.

Hey isn’t your qb sitting out otas for a removal of a back pimple. I live in Dallas and trust me this dude is playing golf secretly somewhere. Cowboys won’t win a sb with Romo.

  21. Yes what Albert Breer and this story failed to mention is sure he’s at OTA’s and on the field, however, he’s with the other injured players recovering from off season surgeries running these drills. And as Griffin explained he asked the trainers instead of those recovering from off season surgeries just standing around taking mental reps let them do some reps together…it’s not like their out there tackling etc.,

  22. the only maryland team sure would not trade qb’s
rg3 is damaged goods .skins sure could have used a few more draft picks

Justincase you did not notice, but this is an article about the Redskins QB, if you don’t like the fans or the article don’t read it.

The Redskins had 7 draft picks this year and picked up players they needed can the Kravens say that?

  25. Ima keep it simple, I’ll take 1, 3 and 4. I think they may actual try to improve #2 a bit.

  26. Note to all those who seem to think it was the offense the Skins run as the reason for RGIII’s injury…watch the film, and you’ll see not one time was he hurt running on the read option/pistol formations…

Both injuries the concussion and the knee injury were due to the pocket collapsing on traditional drop back passing plays and he scrambled out of the pocket not from running out of the read option/pistol formations.

My question to all the haters is why because RGIII suffers a knee injury everyone feels it’s doom and gloom from here on out and blaming the style of offense? Hey Brady doesn’t scramble he got hurt in the pocket should the Patriots had changed the style of offense they run??? I mean look at all the traditional drop back QB’s who’ve been hurt without leaving the pocket…I mean come on it’s football people run with the people get hit with the football and part of that is you have to know when to protect yourself.

  27. @rgtre10 – Bad logic. Look no further than the NFC East. Three of the teams have scrambling/running QBs and one doesn’t. Which one is most durable?

    Which one won the division…RGIII

So there goes you’re logic…speaking of most durable Eli and Coughlin tell us why they always get this dumb arse look on their faces when one screws up or something doesn’t go their way???

  29. If the skins were smart they would be having Cousins run the first team until they know that knee is COMPLETELY healed…

Asynchronous as they invested, they better protect him

This is what I get entertaining a 5th grade drop out. The issue you raised regarded durability not who won the division. By the way, you didn’t specify which year the division was won. Eli’s won a bunch but we don’t talk about those. Division wins are for the plebes of the NFL. Let’s talk SBs. I bet you weren’t conceived yet the last time the Skins won.

  31. Actually skinsdiehard, a gimmick offense would produce good offensive stats (for one year) so thank you for making my point!

Quoting his completion % as proof that he’s a well developed passer is especially ironic, considering that high completion % is the direct result of the gimmick dink-and-dunk offense they were running.

Remember that Vick was nearly the league MVP in his 1st year with the Eagles back in 2010… what happened? I’ll tell you what happened, the league caught up to the gimmicks Andy Reid was using to give Vick easier reads and Vick wasn’t a good enough passer to adapt, RG3 is about to find himself in the same boat.

The Falcons started Vick off the same way the Skins are starting with RG3, one read and run, which is a good way to squeeze out a few wins, but long term it’s a disservice to a talented young QB prospect.

If that 4.3 speed (assuming he still has it) is enough to keep him out of trouble, why did he miss so many snaps this past year?

  32. Hey CatMan, didn’t watch any of the Skins games this year, did you? How many snaps did Griffin miss this season? And our “dink and dunk” offense had one of the highest percentages of pass completions over 20 yards in the league. Not from dinking and dunking. I suggest you watch the thanksgiving day massacre against Dallas and tell me about our “dink and dunk” offense.

Also, please do not compare him to Vick. Vick has never been even close to the QB that Griffin is. And, our offense was no more gimmick than San Frans or Seattles. As a matter of fact, those two teams stole our offense. Face it, this is the new wave of NFL offenses. It has taken over college ball, and now it is here. Get over it.
