Shanahan on RG3: “very special,” can be one of the best ever

Robert Griffin III, Mike Shanahan AP

Washington coach Mike Shanahan says quarterback Robert Griffin III isn’t just a good young quarterback. Griffin is, according to Shanahan, a unique talent who has the potential to be the best ever to play the game.

Shanahan told Albert Breer of NFL Network that players like Griffin come along so rarely that a blockbuster trade like the one Washington pulled off to draft Griffin is a bargain.

“That’s why you give up two 1s and a No. 2 for him. You give those things up because you see something very, very special,” he said. “You see what type of athlete he is and what type of ability he has. He can make every throw on the field, he’s extremely bright, he’s got great work ethic, and he’s got passion for the game. Those are the things you look for. Now, the rest is taking it to the field.”

Most quarterbacks improve significantly in their ability to read NFL defenses and run NFL offenses after their rookie seasons, but Shanahan said that even if Griffin doesn’t get any better, he’ll be one of the all-time greats simply by playing the way he played last season.

“If Robert plays like he did [in 2012] the rest of his career,” Shanahan said, “he’ll go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.”

That’s high praise, but it’s not unreasonable to think that Griffin can be a truly great player. Which is why Shanahan’s No. 1 priority has to be making sure Griffin gets healthy and stays healthy.

It’s too bad Shanny will be the main reason RGKnee will never be one of the best. RGKnee is the second reason because he doesn’t avoid contact and would not be an efficient passer without his running ability.

But people comparing ANYONE to the ‘best ever’ after less than one season in ANY sport are just plain idiots.

I am pretty sure Rex Ryan said the same thing about Sanchez and Geno. Reid with Vick and Lewis with Dalton. Fisher with Bradford and Philbin with Tannehill.

There might be other people, but Shanahan is not quoted saying that. To be precise:

“If Robert plays like he did [in 2012] the rest of his career,” Shanahan said, “he’ll go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.”

The key point is *if* he plays like he played he’ll be one of the best…nothing wrong with that.

He exhibits no leadership skills on the field.

He cannot run a two minute offense in under four minutes.

He is a running back who can complete short and mid-range passes; he cannot complete a long pass when the receiver has anyone within five yards of him.

Real quality QB’s don’t have dead halves – China Doll repeatedly sucks for a whole half – he seems to choose which one and then phones it in on one half and shows up for another.

If RG3 stays healthy for a long time after this year there is no doubt he is on route for that title. If he keeps breaking records and stays in the league long bringing the redskins to the playoffs I can see it happening.

I love RG3 as a person and a player, only the jealous are the ones who hate on him. I am not a fan of the redskins but I sure am an RG3 fan.

It’s amazing what popular media can do for a person’s image. Okay, yeah he played very well last season. One season. When he has about four more playing at that level or near it, then maybe this image that has been branded (literally) on him can be justified.

  62. skns2thend says: May 25, 2013 2:36 AM

People/you all can say all the negative crap ya want but Shanny has proved to be one of the best coaches in the game. I do believe he knows what he’s talking about. And let’s just be honest…a healthy RGIII is second to none. Not to mention the fact that in my 40 years of being a NFL fan (and Redskins being my only team, of course), there’s never been a talent such as RGIII come into the game. No matter how much you dislike the SKINS, there’s no denying the fact that he will go down in NFL history as the best to ever play the game. I’m a Tech fan also and Vick was an awesome player but his level of passion, intelligence,,ball placement, and simply, his talent is nowhere close to Griffin. Everyone can run their #*!%suckers all they want, but the stats, notoriety, and fame speak the truth.
Guaranteed fact ………..if RGIII was QBn your team (or teams for most of you no class chumps) you’d be on the wagon and supporting that best selling Jersey (in history of a year’s time) of his. Get use to the RGIII Phenom. It’s going to get much worse for all you “joy kill ” children that can’t stand success for the Washington Redskins. Dislike the franchise, NOT the player….any young man that’s living right, and has the talent of RGIII’s magnitude, deserves nothing but best wishes and optimism for his career. Not this hating denial for success in RGIII’s career, or any player for that matter, which he’s worked so hard for.
    HTTR!!!

  63. jlswisc says: May 25, 2013 2:51 AM

The media needs to get things straight so that posters can get things straight.

For the most part the Mike/Kyle Shannahan play calling is NOT what exposes RG to health risks.

It’s RG himself and the broken plays that have a much greater impact on his health.

In fact, the Shanny’s do a pretty good job of PROTECTING RG. Under CALLED plays RG very rarely takes long (7 step) drops with his blindside in trouble.

The play calling moves the pocket alot…allowing RG to be protected while moving and avoid risk of getting hit.

Even CALLED runs, are not that dangerous, they have proper blocking and intended end points.

Hell, the zone read even gives the QB an extra couple seconds to make a throw (or cover up) before the defense gets there.

  64. jlswisc says: May 25, 2013 2:56 AM

Its RG himself and the broken plays that are dangerous.

RG does not yet have the “6th sense” that Russel Wilson has to avoid contact down the field. Not only can RW slide but he also is very good at avoiding big hits (even when contact happens).

RG has not “learned” this skill yet.

Furthermore, its on his scrambles (not called runs) where he takes the most dangerous hits. This is because there is not blocking and because at times he is still looking to pass so he opens his body up for contact.

Just look at his injuries this year:

    1. The concussion vs. Atlanta was on a scramble

    2. The initial leg injury vs Bmore, was also during a scramble run.

    3. The injury in the playoff game was on a broken play, near the sideline where RG tried to throw the ball and got hit.

And finally, just the way he is physically built leads to more injuries (same with vick). Taller, skinnier, players dont take contact as well as smaller, compact players.

    Dont blame Shanny.

  65. jlswisc says: May 25, 2013 3:00 AM

    @laserw

What on earth are you talking about? RG showed great 2 minute/comeback potential during his rookie year.

yes a few times the skins came up short, but RG insured that the skins had a chance to win many games in the final period and even the final drive.

QBs usually get better at this as they progress in years. RG has always shown he is more than capable of winning games late.

  66. jlswisc says: May 25, 2013 3:05 AM

One final point about the injuries to RG

People are acting like the guy had 10000 injuries this year.

    He really had 2 injuries.

    1. A minor concussion when he was hit in the head with a helmet

    2. A knee injury caused by a helmet to the knee that clearly was not 100% when he returned.

He didnt have 3 broken fingers, 2 broken ribs, a knee injury, a sprained ankle, broken toe, and scratched eye.

The only difference b/t RG and other great players who get dinged up and miss time is that RG plays QB.

I grant that this is a difference b/c QB is such an unique position in sports.

But if an RB, WR, FS, or MLB had RG’s injuries or missed the same amount of time, no one would be talking like they are.

The difference is other positions are expected to get hurt and miss some time every so often.

We dont expect that from a QB.

  67. joetoronto says: May 25, 2013 5:59 AM

  69. raideralex99 says: May 25, 2013 6:27 AM

    Really???
If he is such a GREAT QB why does he have to run?
The great ones can make 1 … 2 … 3 … reads and throw the ball to the 4th read without having to run.
Hello that’s why there’s running backs in football … they get the ball and run.
    WRs catch the ball.
    QBs throw the ball.
Seriously … no reason to built him up … he’s proven he can play and so has Wilson and Luck and that other QB who was in the SB.

There have been a lot disparaging remarks about RG3, the coaching, and the overall organization. Some has been warranted due to the owner trying to buy players, the coaching revolving door, and clueless ownership. I will admit that, just as most core skins fans will do. What everyone has missed is that no matter how long this team has everyone’s door mat, you still have that loyal fan base with continued optimism every year even though in reality we knew it would probably end up as a failure of a season. Now things have changed a little, and you can see the change no matter what team you are a fan of. New management rebuilding a competitive roster, old contracts and players disappearing, a stable coaching staff, and god willing a franchise QB. Haters keep trying to tear down this fan base, and make fun of the change for this organization. It will make it that much more satisfying when the skins do consistently compete for divisions, conferences, and hopefully sometime in the current future world championships. The hate is what is inspiring the some of these crazy comments on this site from skins fan due to lack of respect this team is receiving from other fans, so what do you expect from the #1 fan base in the US? As for RG3, he has shown that he can be special, and also average due to his youth, which is what everyone is forgetting. This is just the very beginning of his career, and when things slow down, and he gets comfortable in the pocket and receiving corps, it will be fun to watch him shut all of the critics up that think all he can do is be effective as a runner. Even if the skins take a step back this year because of all of the young kids that are now on this roster, skins fans know that it’s just the beginning of something special with the team. HTTR!!

You can always tell when people start talking out of their collective rear ends on this site. RG3 can’t improvise a game winning drive? How about the Tampa game where the headsets stopped working at end of game, something that happens frequently in Tampa, and all RG3 did was march downfield and win. He can’t complete deep passes with defenders around recievers? Ask any Philly fan if they recall Moss owning the eagles DBs. Seriously people, try actually watching a game once in awhile.

shan better get his meds checked. Better than montana? or brady? or ……. Long way to go. Running qb’s don’t ever do well over the long term. Great 1 year or great 2 years…just ask vick. THat guy could run. look at that guy from san fran..He can run and throw. Didn’t win a super bowl..did he?

I agree with Big Ben. Everyone needs to settle down. We are led to believe that these rookie QBs will be competing for all the SBs for the next 15 years. Griffin, Wilson, Luck, Kaepernick. One of them will be lucky to win a SB.

I have nothing against RGIII…not my kinda style qb but we will see.

Regarding Shanahan…..the way you treated and messed up Jake Plummer really is inexcusable.

Hopefully RGIII’s agent protects him better.

    RG3 RG3 RG3 RG3 excuse I have to go and puke.
    You can delete this comment in 3 … 2 … 1.

You are obviously 12 or 13 and know NOTHING about football!! Raideralex99 Alex, The Raider fan, born, 1999= 13-14. No team want a pocket statue anymore. You see the Giants Patriots Superbowl? Broken play SCRAMBLE wins the game. Big Ben could be considered a pocket passing QB EXCEPT, he NEVER let’s a play just die. If you are a competitor(and my boy Bobby IS) You keep the play alive as long as you can.
@laserw You CLEARLY are a Seahawks fan. China doll? I suppose you are just using terms YOU are familiar with. How IS your Doll collection sweetheart? Only game last year that RGIII didn’t have the Skins in position to win at the end was the Steelers game… And that one isn’t on Bobby. The Skins receivers looked ALOT like TO that day, Drop after Drop. You can keep claiming ridiculous things but it doesn’t make them fact.

    Lol @theclaim
I know this running qbs don’t win Super Bowl … you know why?
Injuries and when you get to the playoffs … good teams and good defences STOP running qb.
You need to take a chill pill … nobody is saying anything bad about RG3 … They are just sick of hearing how great he is when in fact he has not won 1 playoff game or finish his first season and he is the GREATEST qb of all time …. give me a break.
