Knee injury keeps Kenny Phillips out of practice

Tackle Jason Peters wasn’t the only Eagle not on the field during Tuesday’s organized team activity.

Safety Kenny Phillips also missed the session because of a knee issue. Phillips has a long history of problems with his right knee, which required microfracture surgery during the 2009 season and missed nine games last season with more knee problems. Eagles coach Chip Kelly would confirm only that Phillips was held out because of his knee and offered no information about whether or not this was a recurrence of a past injury.

“I don’t ask questions,” Kelly said, via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “They just tell me who’s going and who’s not going.”

That suggests we won’t know much about Phillips’ condition unless Kelly continues to get told that Phillips isn’t able to go. If that’s the case, the gamble that the Eagles made by signing Phillips to a relatively inexpensive one-year deal will have failed. Nate Allen and Patrick Chung were the safeties with the first team on Tuesday and will likely be the starters come the regular season if Phillips isn’t physically able to be a consistent presence in the lineup.
