Dolphins’ Koa Misi: Our defense can be great

Koa Misi AP

We’ll have to wait a few months to find out if the 2013 Dolphins are really a good team. But it’s clear that they think they’re a really good team.

The latest Dolphin to talk up the team is linebacker Koa Misi, who said he believes the defense will be not just good but great this season.

We can be great,” Misi told the Miami Herald. “We’ve got a lot of new guys. They’re trying to learn the defense right now. The guys that they brought in to play in this defense and bring it to where we need to be, I think they did a good job in that.”

Among the other boasts we’ve heard from the Dolphins this offseason have been claims that Ryan Tannehill will be one of the great quarterbacks, that the arrival of Mike Wallace gives them the best receivers in the division and that they’re planning to “make some noise.”

Dolphins fans will have to hope that the noise isn’t all talk.

Welcome to the true NFL offseason, the time when people will anything and everything.

It’s great that they have confidence. Noted. Now shut the hell up and concentrate on getting better and winning games. That statement made by winning is the ONLY one that matters and that doesn’t happen in the off-season.

it’s a toss up between Wallace and Stevie Johnson. Those are the two best WR’s in the AFCE now that Welker defected.

    “We can be great”

Yes, this is technically true. But it requires that every starting QB Miami faces this season tear their ACL the week before playing the Dolphins. Odds of that are about one in 10 million.

I wouldn’t say Welker defected, more like exiled. LoL.

He said “can be great”, not “will be great” as was written in the 2nd paragraph. You should fix that.

I’m a Dolphins fan and this gave me a chuckle.

The Fins have had too much going on for Hard Knocks not to come calling again, but I’m not so sure Philbin and the front office will oblige this time around. I sure hope they do.

Well according to the players and PFT headlines, it sounds like its going to be the dolphins vs. the cowboys in the Super Bowl.

Don’t even need to play the season anymore.

  13. finfanvin says: May 29, 2013 1:32 PM

For some reason this is so much more believable coming from Philbin’s Dolphins, than it is coming from Ryan’s Jets

  14. vaphinfan says: May 29, 2013 1:33 PM

Good job Smith. A player says “we can be great” and you make it a big deal. Good job keep up the good work buddy.

Dolphins had a great offseason and should be improved if all the new pieces mesh, especially on D. Still a little weak in the trenches and they lost some guys too. Still, it’s a QB league and it’s gonna be all about Tannehill; is he the real deal or not. I think they should have signed Flynn, we’ll see. Haven’t closed the gap on the Pats yet.

Yeah, because nothing screams credible more than three winning season out of the last ten and not a play-off win since the early 90’s….bwahhhhhh

  19. justsomerandomguy24 says: May 29, 2013 2:00 PM

They could be great. The Patriots defense and/or the Bills defense could be great too. Nobody knows yet… that’s why they play the games.

Mike Wallace: Best WR in the division… I think that says MUCH more about the lack of talent at the position in your overrated division than it does about the skill set of Wallace who at 60 million was a HORRIBLE signing he is ONLY good to run a deep route that is it.

  26. stillers6 says: May 29, 2013 2:46 PM

Ever notice how the NFL teams that do all the talking don’t amount to a lot. Also, notice how nearly all of the teams that make a big free agent splash don’t amount to a lot.

  27. Patskrieg dot com says: May 29, 2013 2:48 PM

This sounds awfully familiar to the tune the Dolphins sang last season when they claimed that their awesome linebacker corps were going to roll all over everyone and would dwarf the flimsy Patriots defense in comparison . Remind me how that worked out?

    Total Yards
    21st overall (5708)

    Passing Yards
    27th overall (3974)

    Rushing Yards
    13th overall (1734)
^Hey not bad, still worse than the Patriots (the team with no defense supposedly)

    Interceptions
    t-27th overall (10)
^Exactly 1/2 of the INTs generated by the Patriots and their supposedly non-existent pass defense

    Forced Fumbles
    t-8th overall (19)
^Pretty good. Still 13 fewer than the #1 FF team in the league the New England Patriots.

Dolphin fans, so much talk and hope and by week six…….not so much as a peep, until the following May…..then repeat! Some things always stay the same!

  29. jahndoh says: May 29, 2013 3:20 PM

Convenient how Patskrieg (gee I wonder who he pulls for?) left out sacks and scoring on his stats list eh?

Sacks: 7th (no Jordan, Ellerbe, Wheeler or Grimes (coverage sacks))
    Scoring: 6th

Only one stat means anything on team defense. Scoring.

  30. jahndoh says: May 29, 2013 3:22 PM

    New England scoring defense:

    32nd by a mile and a half over 31st.

  31. dieselguy19 says: May 29, 2013 3:22 PM

The ignorance of most, NOT all of the people that comment is hysterical. Are people really that lame to not know all of these responses by players are cohersed by the media? It’s not like these guys run to the local news channel and say “our defense is going to be great”. They are interviewed at practices and asked “so do you think your defense can be good or great?” What’s any player gonna say? What are you gonna say if your asked if your good or great at your job? Get a life people and find something better to do then write all this negativity, of go get a job working for the press please.

  32. officialgame says: May 29, 2013 3:23 PM

I think Jordan if used properly (outside LB) can really help them. He is the real deal.

  33. rayfinkleisonehellofamodelamerican says: May 29, 2013 4:07 PM

Players just can’t be confident in their team’s ability without writers twisting their words around.

  34. jrcoop says: May 29, 2013 5:29 PM

One more note… this is not the same as Ryan predicting a championship, which he later admitted was unwise pressure on the players (even though many of them repeated the mantra).

Philbin is smart enough not to do so himself, but let his players. I bet he reminds them if you talk the talk… put up or shut up. Believing in yourself and your team mates is 95% of making it happen.
