Redskins coach Mike Shanahan brought back one of his old friends to the organization, but not to the sidelines.

The Redskins announced that longtime defensive coach Larry Coyer has been hired as an advance scout.

The 70-year-old Coyer has been out of the business since the Colts fired him from their defensive coordinator job after the 2011 season.

Prior to that three-year stint, he had seven seasons working for Shanahan in Denver, including four as defensive coordinator. Coyer has 47 years of college and pro experience, and will give Shanahan a trusted voice.

The team also hired Aubrey Pleasant as an offensive assistant.
