Greg Jennings: “It’s May and I’m perfectly fine”

Greg Jennings AP

Before Vikings fans freak out about their $45 million free agent addition being injured — the one who struggled with injuries last year — Greg Jennings insists he’s fine.

And he did it with the spirit appropriate to the OTA season.

“It’s May,” Jennings said, via Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com. “Nothing right now counts as much. It’s important. But it really doesn’t count as much as September, August.

“It’s May, and I’m perfectly fine.”

Jennings was held out of yesterday’s practice with a sore ankle, but coach Leslie Frazier said he expected his new wide receiver to work next week.

Of course, it is reasonable to wonder. Jennings did miss 11 games the last two years because of injuries.

That creates a perception that seemed to bother him more than the ankle, which caused him to miss the first open-to-reporters workout since signing his deal this offseason.

“He mentioned that to me,” Frazier said. “He said, ‘Of all the times for me to be injured, with the media coming in and my history over this past year and now I know what’s going to be written and said’ — but it’s just a minor injury, and he’ll be back and going. No issues.”

So the ankle’s fine, but the ego’s a little tender.

It’s kind of weird that Packer fans are saying that Jennings is so overpaid. The Packers offered him $8 million a year, even though Packer fans believe he would be their fourth wide receiver. Seems like it makes a lot of sense for the Vikings to offer him more so he can be their #1 receiver. And keep in mind that it’s really a 3-year contract with two team option years because there’s no guaranteed money in the last two years.

Jennings is right, it is May. His biggest problem is that when Sept, Oct, Nov, and December rolled around, he wasn’t on the field then either.

Considering the team with the smarts to draft Troy Williamson in the first round and sign Bernard Berrian to a big FA contract must really know what they are doing when it comes to WR’s, right? So cleaver in fact that when they did draft a good one in Percy Harvin, they made sure he stayed a Viking. Oh wait, scratch that last one.

Don’t worry, Rick, we weren’t saying he would have been our 4th receiver. We said that he had the 4th highest total for a packers wideout last year, which is different. Reading comprehension. Try it.

Furthermore, $5 million more than the packers were offering for a wide receiver? With YOUR QB? That’s like paying 5 million for fishing line when you don’t own a pole. You won’t catch too many fish. I tried using a fishing analogy so you could try to understand.

This difference between Vikings fans and Packer fans is that the Packers will claim a player (Favre, Jennings) is the best of their generation and a future Hall of Famer, but if they get traded to a diff team then those same players become instant garbage, even tho less than 8 months ago these same fans would literally hoist these players in the air (Lambaeu Leap).
I have continued to cheer for future Hall of Fame ex-Vikings, like Randy Moss, and I will be happy to see players like Percy Harvin, and Antoine Winfield do well, even if they are an NFC opponent. …That and Packer fans think its cool to wear cheese on their head.

I would say Vikings fans have to make points up in order to makes themselves feel good. No one ever said Favre wasn’t a great QB. We just grew tired of his act and it was time for a change. No one ever said Jennings was the best WR of his generation outside of extreme homers (which every fanbase has).

Jennings has missed significant time and if you don’t see the risk of giving him that money than you have blinders on. It a questionable move that can cost you a roster spot to develop young talent and eat up your cap that could be used to sign young talent.

Anyway, this is probably the same nagging injury Mr. Jennings had in…urp…sorry, almost puked, in green bay. It’s just that wisconsin is not technologically advanced.

  47. hurrayforyogapants says: May 30, 2013 7:20 PM

Jennings is a genius. His contract says $937,500 per game, but since he only plays every other week it’s really $1,875,000 per game. I think Valyncia will be very happy about that…

  48. ddjesus says: May 30, 2013 7:25 PM

I admit that Greg is still capable of being a big asset, but a couple of things to keep in mind:

1.) The Packers needed money available to cram in as much front loaded money they could with Rodgers and Matthews signing new deals. I’d rather let Greg walk than either of those two.
2.) I have no idea why TT made such a lucrative offer to Greg considering those other contracts. Hopefully if he had signed it, it would have been structured in a very team friendly way. I wouldn’t mind him on the roster, and he would still be our first or second best receiver for the next couple of years, but…
3.) You can’t dispute the fact that Greg missed a little lot of time last year and is a risky investment. In the time he missed, the Packers offense still looked great.

I love Greg, and he’ll be missed, and I’ve forgiven him for signing with those inbreds on the other side of the Mississippi. Excited to see what our young guys can do at wide out given the opportunity to win a spot.

  49. purplepride74 says: May 30, 2013 7:28 PM

Yoga, Jennings may be a genius but you’re sure not. Although with math skills like that, maybe you’re just a liberal. At 5 years, $45M, that’s $562,500 per game. Or $1,125,000 if he plays every other week. Which isn’t going to happen, by the way. But, thanks for playing!

Probably a good strategy, since they’ll be playing from behind most of the time. Forcing fumbles can’t make-up for a bad D. Junior College LB and a last-ranked secondary will only exacerbate their problem.
    ………………………………………………………………………

Would be easy for me to say apparently it works both ways, but I don`t think that a team that has 50 plus years of failure and futility is really much of a threat. Oops, I keep forgetting. You do have all of those Division Championships.

Yes there is….. Even sadder is when grown men claim superiority via professional sports teams based on what happened before they were born. I like to laugh when these Packer trolls bring up HOFers. They only have two that have played in the last 50 years, and both of them spent half their careers on another team.
