Kenny Phillips expected back on the field next week

Kenny Phillips is, as you might expect, taking time off from OTAs to rest a sore knee.

But a source close to Phillips said he’s expected to be back on the field next week when the Eagles have a mandatory minicamp, according to Geoff Mosher of

Phillips missed nine games last year with knee problems, leading to the Giants allowing him to walk out the door.

He’s been a good player when well, but that’s not the kind of thing you can count on at this point.

When he did work early in OTAs, he was on the second team behind Nate Allen and Patrick Chung, in what could be an indication the Eagles aren’t banking everything on him playing.

  1. Phillips is the best safety the Eagles have in terms of playing the pass downfield, but despite being a ballhawk he really doesn’t move exceptionally well.

A lot of people had harsh words for the play of the Eagles secondary last season, and for good reason, but it was the defense as a whole that was suffering. Everything starts in the trenches, and it’s common belief that if you have adequate, disruptive pass-rushers, then the LBs and secondary will benefit greatly. The duo of Trent Cole and Jason Babin last year had Eagles fans salivating at the thought of what horrors there were to come for opposing QBs, not to mention the stable of young pass rushers they had behind those 2 guys. I’VE NEVER SEEN A PROBOWL GROUP OF D LINEMEN FAIL SO MISERABLY…and the trickle down effect was gaping holes, broken tackles, and blown coverages. Opposing teams took 1 look at the “Wide 9″…and they laughed as they jammed the ball down our throats right between the tackles.

    Change was a dire necessity…

  2. dear eagles fans,

expect to this this headline all year, until hes cut in march and signs with the raiders or somthing in june.

a NYG who just watched another good giant ruin his NFL career bec he left the giants

  3. Did I just see someone refer to Phillips as a ballhawk lol 8 picks and 26 pass deffenses in a career don’t equate to ballhawk buddy

  4. Kenny Phillips was a superb free safety who was also a strong tackler who hit hard. The Giants’ defense was noticeably better when he was on the field. If he left the Giants just because he wanted to be more of a playmaker than a centerfielder then he made a big mistake. Rolle has played very well at strong safety but his age will begin to catch up with him. To sign a one year contract with the Eagles as a second stringer…. Nuts. Didn’t he follow the Steve Smith affair.

If the Giants let him walk because they were convinced that his knee would prevent him from becoming a great one then we will se if the Giants’ front office, which gets so much love, made the right call.

  5. Signing Phillips was a worthwhile gamble, but it looks increasingly unlikely he will be able to play. My guess is he never plays a regular season snap for the Eagles this year. It’s unfortunate, as the rest of the secondary still sucks.

  6. The Eagles have a Wang and a Chung. They also have a Wing and a Wang. They have a Brown and a Cox. I was hoping that they would sign Kyle Love.

  7. Phillips was out for the birth of his first child… not injury related as far as we know.
