Authentic Barrel Man barrel for sale on eBay

Anyone can buy a jersey.

Broncos fans now have a chance to own a distinctive and authentic — if not breezy — piece of team history.

According to the Denver Post, the widow of Tim “Barrel Man” McKernan has placed one of his three “game-worn barrels,” for sale on

When they published their story, bidding was at $300, with a Buy It Now price of $500. Since the Post’s item was published, however, bidding has gone up to $1,150.

McKernan was one of the best-known superfans around the league, proudly supporting the Broncos in his barrel, boots and cowboy hat for more than 30 years, before he died in 2009.

See, even Barrel man’s widow knows the team has no chance. So she is selling his stuff while she can.

The team or Elway or Bowlen as individuals should step up and buy this piece of Broncos’ history.

I remember when I used to go to Raider games and he and one of the guys in the Black Hole had some bantering over the internet. He swore up and down he would, not only attend a Raiders game, but wear the barrell and sit in the Black Hole. The barrell guy was true to his word and “sat” in the Black Hole surrounded by the enemy. Such was the respect that no one laid a finger on him.

If I was a Broncos fan I’d be all over that for my man cave. You could turn it into a kegerator, or hang it on the wall. Turn it into a table. Really cool piece of NFL history.

I say about this the same thing I said about the guy who bought Britney Spears’s hair. Let him show up to buy it, and then lock him away for a long time. It’s for his own good, really.

  16. icdogg says: May 31, 2013 4:50 PM

    “How did he sit down?”

If it were me, I would build a seat into the inside of the barrel.

He’s about the only guy in the league that could make us Raider fans look “normal”.
    Hat’s off.

No disrespect intended for the deceased, but I can’t decide what is dumber attire for a football game – dressing up like a dog, a pig or wearing a barrel instead of pants…

If I’m Pat Bowlen, I buy it for the team Hall of Fame and give his widow ALOT of money… making it a big public spectacle to reward the super-fan and enshrine him as part of the team’s legacy. It would cost him so little, reward his widow a lot, and be a great PR stunt.

Raider fans catch a lot of grief about how they dress for games, but when you see someone wearing a barrel or sporting a large piece of foam cheese on their head, you realize that folks are just having fun.

$500??? For a piece of your team’s history, that would have been a steal. That thing will top 3k before all’s said and done.

  22. footballhistorian says: Jun 1, 2013 3:46 AM

That picture…along with my own perverse imagination…leads me to think of one question…were the stains worse in the front or the back of the barrel?

  23. joetoronto says: Jun 1, 2013 5:05 AM

Who the hell would pay for that monstrosity?
