Sam Shields signs his Packers RFA tender

With a long-term deal possibly in the offing, Packers defensive back Sam Shields has made the first move toward multi-year security.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Shields has signed his one-year restricted free agency tender.

He’s now under contract through 2013, at a salary of $2.023 million.

Undrafted in 2010, Shields had been tendered at the second-round level.  Absent a long-term deal, he’ll be eligible for unrestricted free agency next year.

Obviously he was going to sign the tender. The Packers get 1 more year to see if he’ll pan out, and Shields gets 1 year to prove he will, to either the Packers or another team. Win for both parties….

am i the only one that thinks RFA is complete bs?

Glad that’s resolved. To me Shields is a rather maddening player. There are times when he looks like an all-pro. But there are other times when he trusts his speed too much, gets caught up looking at the QB, and lets his man get ten yards behind him. I’m hoping that the gambling tendencies of everyone in the D Backfield will be lowered a bit now that they won’t be trying to play like Woodson. The defensive coaches need to haul on the reins this season, at least unless the pass rush improves without a lot of blitzing.

Sounds like he isn’t a team player. Sign your tender and practice with your team, diva.

    Ooops.

You’re welcome, Packer fans. Obviously, Shields saw my comment and was shamed into signing the tender.

After half a century of ineptitude and futility, maybe you could shame your team into finally winning a Superbowl.

Shields had one card to play during OTAs and he played it. It would have been a surprise had he not held out a little bit. You at least see if you can’t get some kind of offer. I bet he is signed before the year is over.

I want to see 8-10 more games of good play from this guy before they give him an extension.

Had football’s sleaziest agent, Drew Rosenhaus, made an appearance at Lambeau? Packer fans have learned to loathe Drew after the Mike McKenzie and Javon Walker messes.

I don’t see him wanting to leave Green Bay anytime soon with that gigantic Packers Super Bowl ring tattooed on his neck.

Desperation move. TT can’t let mediocre players go w/out having a hoarding zap of impulse shoot through his sciatica. Keep kicking that empty can of Frito Cheese Dip down the road losers.
    Nothing will slow the decline.

I wouldn’t be mad if we Let Tramon go and kept Shields – Sam has actually stepped up, improved his game since he’s entered the league, improved his tackling – everything.

Tramon …improved at running away from physical play, smh.
