Jets in no hurry to name a starter

Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez AP

The Jets have made it clear their quarterback job is up for grabs. But no one has grabbed it yet, apparently.

Though offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he hoped the Jets could determine on a starter quickly so there would be enough reps with the first offense, that’s not going to happen just yet.

Via Kim Jones of the NFL Network, Jets coach Rex Ryan said “I don’t think we’re close,” to making a decision.

That means we have many more weeks of wondering whether they’re going to go with Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith.

While there’s no real reason to declare prior to training camp, there is something to the idea of getting the chosen quarterback as much work as possible. The sooner they can make a decision, the better chance at familiarity (which based on last year, is needed).

The longer this goes, the more it feels like they’re waiting for Smith to do something to make it his own. Until that happens, however, they have to be careful about undermining whatever confidence Sanchez has left.

With those choices, I wouldn’t be in a hurry either.

The longer this goes the more u media people can keep assuming Smith going to be the starter. I think the Jets are waiting to see how good the team will be. If they really think they got a shot at the playoffs there going to start Sanchez. Unless Smith just tear it up.

When you don’t have a starter on the roster, that tends to happen…

Who is going to block for the eventual starter? Who are they going to hand the ball off to?
Who is going to catch their passes?
    Rex loves Feet

Maybe the starter isn’t on the roster yet.

  6. sbdt says: Jun 5, 2013 3:24 PM

That’s good because they still need to sign one.

Will it matter in the end? 5-11 at best

So Marty is saying to bet the under (6.5 wins) for the upcoming season. Got it, thanks.

Coming from someone with Gabbert in their handle, now thats funny.

What’s the over under on combined lame Rex foot jokes and buttfumble references? I’ll set the line at 6.

    How about 4-12. You’re welcome

Sanchez needs more reps to perfect his throwing interceptions technique? Geno needs more reps to polish his ego with? The other two I don’t know, but I have the feeling that they might be the ones for whom the extra work just might be the key to the Jets getting a decent QB under center. Remember it fans of GangGreen, you clamored for Sanchez to replace the then starter (Pennington?). You were sure that the USC star was “it”! You might want to hold your optimism for Smith in check, “until” he becomes a known quantity.

This would be like me saying “I’m in no hurry to spend this 500 million dollars.”

It could simply be the starter is not yet on the roster. The jets may be waiting to see if a QB gets cut that might be an upgrade to the QB position. If Tavaris Jackson or Campbell get cut both would be pretty huge upgrades over Sanchez. but then again there are not many QBs that will not be a big upgrade.

What Idzik has shown is tat he would like a cheap upgrade over Sanchez similar to the deal he gave Garrard. Once that is accomplished Sanchez and all memories of his disastrous 4 years can be removed from the roster.

the Jets should have gone after Matt Flynn. Even if Matt Flynn turns out to be a bust, he’s still got to be better than the superheroes the Jets currently have in camp, Captain Buttfumble and the SuperEgo.

Instead, they let the circus atmosphere continue to build and grow.

Know what i haven’t heard in a while? The “he took us to two afc championship games” defense of dirty sanchez. I also remember him saying Pete Caroll told him he should stay at USC before the draft and when Pete came into the nfl he called him an was bragging about this teo chapionship games. Ooooooh how fast the arrogant fall right on their face.

  19. prmpft says: Jun 5, 2013 4:33 PM

All correct except Pennington was let go after they signed Favre. The last game of that year Pennington returned to NY as a Dolphin and knocked Favre and the Jets out of playoff contention while securing the AFCE Championship for the Fins. Truly a beautiful story book conclusion to a classic Jets maneuver.

For the record Sanchez jersey has been the biggest selling jersey in JETS history. I just bought my authentic Sanchez jersey. I had a premonition last night I saw Mark Sanchez winning the Next Superbowl and being awarded Superbowl MVP. So one this happens, I wonder if Rex Ryan and Sanchez will lose their jobs ?

  29. laughernyc says: Jun 6, 2013 8:57 PM

Good lord. This team will be 4-12 with either one. Sanchez is the worst QB in the game. 10 OTA’s and he hasn’t been named over a raw rookie? And the rookie hasn’t been named over him? Talk about a rush to the bottom. If the Jets can’t pick up someone with some experience who won’t embarrass them, the thought of #6 stepping on the field against TB is just scarifying. Yes Sanchez is acting modest and team oriented, but he has much to be modest about.

If Revis really loves Jets fans, he should blitz on the first play from scrimmage, break Sanchez’s collarbone, and rid NY of this bum for good. After all, it’s #6 who humiliated Revis into playing saddled with the worst offense in the universe, and his contract that made the Jets unable to keep the best corner in the game in NY.
