Santonio Holmes could start camp on PUP list

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that the Jets won’t be naming a starting quarterback anytime soon and that decision could still come before wide receiver Santonio Holmes gets back onto a football field.

Holmes said back in December that he wasn’t sure whether his injured left foot would recover in time to join the team for the start of training camp and things haven’t become any clearer on that front in the last six months. Ryan said that Holmes is making progress in rehabbing his surgically repaired foot, but that things may not move quickly enough for him to avoid starting the year on the physically unable to perform list.

“He’s doing a decent job, but we’ll see how he is in training camp,” Ryan said Wednesday, via Matt Ehalt of ESPNNewYork.com. “There’s a possibility he starts out on the PUP, I’m not sure, but he seems to be doing well.”

Holmes will be just about 10 months removed from the injury when the Jets open up camp this summer, so it would definitely be a bit worrisome if he wasn’t healthy enough to start working sometime close to that date. The Jets’ receiving corps is unimpressive even with Holmes at 100 percent, but his absence would leave whoever wins the quarterback competition with an almost bare cupboard to work with.
