The Texans are getting their OTA work in early this morning, and they’re doing it with heavy hearts.

According to Tania Ganguli of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans coaches and players will attend a memorial for four Houston firefighters who were killed Friday.

It’s important to us as an organization and a team,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “The players, we talked about it yesterday. We want to show our support for our community and for those families. We look forward to being there to show our support tomorrow.”

The memorial service at Reliant Stadium begins at 10 a.m., so they had to move their practice from 11:15 a.m. to 8 a.m., but no one minded.

“It’s a very humbling deal to be able to go in and support this community in the best manner that we can,” punter Shane Lechler said. “Those are the real heroes. We are here mainly to win football games and entertain people. Those guys save lives. To be able to go and support the fallen and the ones that are still injured and in the hospital, it means a lot to us, it means a lot to me to just be a part of it.”

And while it won’t do anything to make them better on the field, it will make them a more ingrained piece of the community they live in.

Which, actually, is more important than any red zone practice or defensive plans they might have otherwise been working on.
