Vick doesn’t know where he stands in quarterback competition

Michael Vick, Matt Barkley, Dennis Dixon, G.J. Kinne, Nick Foles AP

Before, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick was certain.  Now, he’s confused.

This is still my team,” Vick said in April“This is still my job.”

Asked on NFL Network today where he stands in the effort to keep his job, Vick was candid:  “I don’t know.”

But he’s still confident.

“That is up to Coach [Chip Kelly] to decide what is best for this football team but as of right now, I am very pleased with my progress,” Vick said.  “Today, I felt like I had some throws I wanted back but for the most part I have done good.  I got some balls in the end zone and just playing the position the way it is supposed to be played.”

Kelly has said he’s in no hurry to name a starter, which means that it may not be Vick.  But even if he isn’t the starter, Vick plans to contribute.

“Always going to be a leader on this team, regardless of what my place is,” Vick said.  “I am confident that I continue to be a guy that is looked up to on this team and continue to play my role.”

It’s still unclear what his role will be.  And it apparently won’t be clear for a while longer.

Let him play. Best chance they have.

  2. PriorKnowledge says: Jun 5, 2013 9:36 PM

Hard to believe they would start Foles over Vick.

  3. gadzod says: Jun 5, 2013 9:40 PM

He should race for it, since he thinks that matters the most.

  4. mythaimyke says: Jun 5, 2013 9:43 PM

He will be on the bench! That’s where he stands!

  5. clu1perceiver says: Jun 5, 2013 9:46 PM

Vick stands in the quicksand of his inconsistent past and the fog of self deception.

  6. gloryfromheaven says: Jun 5, 2013 9:49 PM

Well if he considers himself the fastest QB on the team, then he should win.

  7. skoobyfl says: Jun 5, 2013 9:51 PM

    Vick is being modest.

  8. somekat says: Jun 5, 2013 9:51 PM

not that hard to believe if you’ve paid any attention to the turnover machine that vick has been for the last 2 years.

This team is not ready to win, what is the point of a 33 year old qb? especially one that isn’t an elite level qb anyway?

My guy tells me Vick wins the job out of training camp. But he won’t keep the job. Either through poor play, or through injury, Foles will be the starter, for better or worse, by week 8

  9. somekat says: Jun 5, 2013 9:52 PM

    guy = gut

^^^It’s not hard do believe they would start Foles over Vick.

Chip Kelly’s QB needs to have the ability to: Read defenses, get the ball out quickly, limit negative plays & turnovers.

Vicks weakness: Trouble reading defenses, holds onto the ball too long, sometimes creates huge losses by running backwards and trying to make a play, turnover prone.

Foles Strengths: Showed a lot of promise reading defenses as a rookie, gets the ball out quickly, has experience in a hurry up offense in Arizona.

Vick not standing….does anyone else see the irony?

  12. chi01town says: Jun 5, 2013 9:59 PM

If they dont start Vick, he will leave
next season. Vick is still the best QB
on that team. Plus he is still the most exciting player in the NFL.

  13. thegreatgabbert says: Jun 5, 2013 10:07 PM

Michael stands third from the left, I believe.

  14. thegreatgabbert says: Jun 5, 2013 10:07 PM

    …in the second row.

Vick is not the future, nor is he any better than Foles. Foles put up equal numbers as Vick did last year, except that Foles was playing with a team that already quit, and was missing starters all over the place. Vick still had the majority of the starters while he was playing, and pretty much had the same success.

Vick cost his team countless times last year with untimely turnovers. Hell even the couple games he won he still had 3-4 turnovers. They won in spite of Vick, not because of him. Even in 2011 he had a very healthy team, and barely broke .500. Why anyone would want Vick to start is beyond me.

  16. ronniemundsmambo says: Jun 5, 2013 10:10 PM

Maybe Donovan should call Vick instead of RGIII. Might be more relatable.

  17. rxv5854 says: Jun 5, 2013 10:11 PM

Probably because he hasn’t learned how to read a depth chart yet.

  18. icdogg says: Jun 5, 2013 10:12 PM

It’s best to let this play out as a competition. Let someone step up and earn the job.

  19. sb50 says: Jun 5, 2013 10:12 PM

I dont think people understand how serious Chip is on this QB competition. If you compare the 10 games Vick played last season and Nick Foles’ 6 games last season, their averages are almost identical. Vick went 3-7 and Foles went 1-5. It should be a fair competiton and just because Vick is fast doesn’t mean he should be handed the job. Vick always looks good in shorts because he has a good arm, but when the pads come on, he looks lost.

I’m not saying Foles should be the starter, he needs to do a lot of work on his game, but he should give Vick a run for his money this off-season.

    Should be fun to watch.

“Hard to believe they would start Foles over Vick.”

“Let him play. Best chance they have.”

Did you numbskulls watch him play the last 2 1/4 seasons? Obviously not… he’s a turnover injury waiting to happen. he does not give the Eagles the best chance at winning, LOL!!

These are the fans of other teams hoping Vick starts so the Eagles lose a ton of games…..you clever bassturds!

Didn’t Cam Newton get criticized on this site for answering a question too confidently?

In fact, I think advice was given here on how Cam should have left it up to the decision makers on if he were made Captain or not.

Now Mike Vick answers a similar question, basically taking the advice of the people on this site, and he’s called ‘confused’.

Mike, when it comes to PFT, you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t.

I wonder how quick heads would explode here if MV7 actually WON a SB. LoL

  22. digrojones says: Jun 5, 2013 10:30 PM

    my thoughts exactly, djax10isthebomb.

After Vick loses the training camp QB competition, he will ask for–and receive–his release and rid us of the awful displeasure of watching Vick sabotage every drive that goes over 5 plays.

  23. richndc says: Jun 5, 2013 10:44 PM

poor Miss Vicky–he just can’t get a fair shake. As usual, it’s the fault of all the stupid haters. I see Vick out of the NFL this year. I hope it happens. Then he can get in the MMA ring with Gordon Shell. Vegas is waiting Mikey. 6-8 million put up for the payout. He will have no other choice. It will be beautiful.

  24. everybodyhits says: Jun 5, 2013 10:48 PM

Pat Shurmur says the most important traits for a QB in this offense are extreme accuracy and quick decision making. He also said Matt Barkley is extremely accurate and makes quick decisions. If Shurmur is right, its only a matter of time until Matt Barkley is the starting QB.

  25. gopblows says: Jun 5, 2013 10:54 PM

Anyone wanting Nick Foles to start are either idiots or not Eagle fans.

  26. jaredo10 says: Jun 5, 2013 10:55 PM

This is Vicks job let’s be real here. I truly believe he will play like the 2010 season thanks to addition of Johnson and returns of peters herrimans and klece.

  27. gopblows says: Jun 5, 2013 10:58 PM

What’s the over & under that most of Vick’s critics have a problem with black quarterbacks?

I mean why else would you want a qb leading your team that doesn’t even have trade value?

  28. greymares says: Jun 5, 2013 11:04 PM

20 posts ahead of this one and there is no love for the winner of the competition and the best Q.B. on the team Matt Barkley. I’m looking for Foles to start somewhat like Doug Peterson during McNabb’s first year. Barkley will be #2 and take over about game 6 Dixon will be #3 with Mike Vick being traded after pre-season game 2

  29. alphamh says: Jun 5, 2013 11:05 PM

You guys are insane if you really believe foles is better then vick….. and all this bs about vick not knowing how to read defenses…come on now, stop watching sports center

  30. beerbudsnbevo says: Jun 5, 2013 11:11 PM

    Donovan McNabb is flabergasted

  31. beerbudsnbevo says: Jun 5, 2013 11:15 PM

    Think about this…

Is Chip Kelly coming in and teaching a whole new system to a bunch of guys with the hopes of winning now?

Or will the Eagles be smart and lock down a starter for the next few years vs. Vick who is in the twilight of his career?

Vick may be your answer for now, which won’t be worth a damn come November.

  32. fafaflunky says: Jun 5, 2013 11:33 PM

start looking for a new qb..chumps offense looks to hard for vick to grasp..
and foles doesnt have the physical
    attributes to run it..

  33. thewarrenmoon says: Jun 6, 2013 12:41 AM

Vick is still trying to learn the alphabet. Who is kidding who?

  34. snarcasms says: Jun 6, 2013 1:11 AM

He doesn’t deserve to be in the league so he better be thankful he’s still getting paid.

  35. majormeatcurtains says: Jun 6, 2013 2:07 AM

Let me guess Mikey. NOT the best passer. NOT the best runner. NOT the best reader of defenses,….NOT the best at ANYTHING. Period. Your past animal violations mean nothing. You are judged, convicted, and sentenced by today’s standards. Take your millions and shut up. Go away. REMOVE yourself from our prevue Bye ahole..

  36. hmpennypacker says: Jun 6, 2013 2:45 AM

If Kelly has any sense Vick’s at the bottom of his depth chart.

  37. damon089 says: Jun 6, 2013 3:41 AM

The whole QB competition as a whole is fun to watch. All these snarky Anti-Vick, Pro-Foles comments just make it look stupid. It’s not like Foles is given the job. They all have a fair shot.

  38. joetoronto says: Jun 6, 2013 4:37 AM

“Today, I felt like I had some throws I wanted back but for the most part I have done good. I got some balls in the end zone and just playing the position the way it is supposed to be played.”

This is classic Mike Vick psychopathic bullcrap.

Mike Vick, fooling the masses and himself for years, SMH.

  39. jammer88 says: Jun 6, 2013 5:53 AM

And as Chip Kelly will say to Vick before he lets him go; “who let da dwags out, michael vick, C U LATER!

  40. chut26 says: Jun 6, 2013 6:22 AM

If Vick didn’t have an amazing 8 games in 2010 he probably wouldn’t even be in the NFL right now. Or at the very least, he would be 2nd or 3rd on somebodies depth chart.

    ———————————-

Let’s keep in mind that vick started out with a mostly healthy team minus Peters. Foles started with a team that had many players not playing by the time he got his chance. Foles came in and started making line adjustments and audibles. He had to show some of the players where to reposition themselves because in the last 2 years under Vick, Vick did not do either of those things.

Let’s not forget one of Vick’s “wins” was game 1 of the year. I think he had 5 turnovers? The second to last play of the game hit the Browns CB right in the chest which would’ve been the game sealing 6th turnover.

  42. eagleswin says: Jun 6, 2013 6:43 AM

Is anyone else annoyed by all the comments Vick makes such as “Chip Kelly showed me how to hold the football properly” or “I never bothered to study the game plan or game tape before i came to Philly” or “Andy Reid is showing me how to read defenses”.

The only difference between Jamarcus Russell and Mike Vick is that can run. Both 1st overall, both cannon arms and both came into the league no desire to improve themselves, they just wanted to party and show up on game day.

The other difference is that Michael Vick supporters still make excuses for him. If Chip Kelly is showing Vick how to hold the football don’t you think Andy Reid “Mike Vick’s ability to read defenses has improved dramatically” wasn’t also trying to show Vick how to hold the football?

Reid was the ultimate players coach, there wasn’t a problem he wouldn’t sweep under the rug for his players.

  43. ejm845 says: Jun 6, 2013 6:46 AM

if he’s not starting there is no place for him, there not going to give him another 3.5 mil to hold on extra points will know in august

  44. bobleblah says: Jun 6, 2013 6:53 AM

    1. Vick
    2. Foles
    3. Dixon
    Barkley to the practice squad.

This arrangment gives them the most flexibility over the course of the season. A Vick injury allows them to elevate Barkley, who could still be a starter by season’s end.

  45. rajbais says: Jun 6, 2013 7:34 AM

I hope he feels he’s first, but Chip thinks he’s last.

Look at the last 2 years of turnovers and wreckless play.

I’d rather salvage Dennis Dixon’s career than Vick’s right now.

Dixon was in Pittsburgh and it not only played Charlie Batch over him, but it cut Santonio, let Mike Wallace go, and replaced reigning coach of the year Bruce Arians with Todd Haley.

The model organization Steelers aren’t “model” all the time. So that should give Dixon and his skeptics hope.

  46. kelz1966kelz1966 says: Jun 6, 2013 7:45 AM

Uncertainty will make them all work harder….It’s about time Vick comprehended what the coach has been saying since he was hired. The QB position is an open competition.

  47. ninerfan81 says: Jun 6, 2013 8:30 AM

Vick has been the biggest tease on the field for me. His arm is electric, he has to have the biggest arm ever for a guy thats not the so called prototypical QB height. We all know how fast he can run but I swear he’s only put it all together during that one season. I think this is his last year in Philly, Chip needed an insurance policy and I think his cap number ofr $8.5M or so was a bargain for a starting QB with 10+ years of experience.

  48. tellthetruth1313 says: Jun 6, 2013 8:37 AM

He’ll be standing on the sidelines injured, AGAIN!

  49. tombradyswig says: Jun 6, 2013 8:47 AM

    Foles is smarter for sure!
I’d rather see Barkley start than Vick!

  50. maalea says: Jun 6, 2013 10:05 AM

    Barkley to the practice squad.

Are you on crack? Barkley would never get thru waivers.

  51. steves11 says: Jun 6, 2013 10:09 AM

Even if Vick wins the starting job in training camp….once the regular season begins and he commits a few turnovers in the red zone, he’ll be benched…never to return.

  52. fafaflunky says: Jun 6, 2013 10:12 AM

start looking for a new qb..vick cant grasp chumps offense and foles isnt athletic enough to run it..

  53. kvanhorn87 says: Jun 6, 2013 10:29 AM

Hopefully Vick starts all year and they get the #1 pick. Suck for Clowney doesn’t quite have a ring to it but his impact could be similar to Lucks (as far as a defensive force can be)

  54. bleedeaglegreen says: Jun 6, 2013 10:34 AM

Anyone that thinks the Vick of 2010 wasn’t an aberration is either an idiot or knows nothing about football.

This guy has always been the most over-hyped athlete of our generation. Very few have had the talent he had & the abhorrent work ethic this man possesses. He’s had 1 good season in 9. And that was really based upon 2 games. It’s no accident that Roddy White became an all pro AFTER Vick was gone in Atlanta.

    Foles didn’t have:
    Jackson
    Mc Coy
    Maclin (the whole time)
The same loss of starters on the O line
And put up eerily similar stats with a 2nd string offense and isn’t anywhere near as mobile as Vick.

I am not saying Nick Foles is the answer guys just that Michael Vick isn’t. 2010 is long gone & so is Vick taking the league by surprise.

  55. buffalomafia says: Jun 6, 2013 10:42 AM

Even if he is a back up he shouldn’t complain. He was givin a second chance to play in the NFL & make good money.

  56. eagles192 says: Jun 6, 2013 10:47 AM

First of all Vick did have most of his offensive weapons but he had no oline. Any smart person knows when you don’t has an oline you don’t have crap. Now I will admit he does turn the ball over and makes. Stupid decisions. But saying that Foles who only won one game last year is better than Vick is insane.

  57. gromgrimfist says: Jun 6, 2013 12:39 PM

“We only scored over 20 points 5 times last season lol Foles did it 5 times and Vick only did it 2 times. Foles did it in 5 of 7 games and Vick did it 2 of 9 games in my opinion theres your QB compitition who puts the points on the board and remember Shady was hurt D-jax was hurt when Foles was at QB and the line started out the year with 4-5 starters and Vick still put up less points then Foles” im counting the game Foles replaced Vick when he got hurt as Foles game

  58. eagles192 says: Jun 6, 2013 4:10 PM

I want the best qb to win. I’m just tired of all the bashing that’s going on.
